What's on your crafty book wish list? Here are three books that I've been eyeing:
Did you know that Louis Armstrong was a collage artist? I first read about this book on The Ink Pad's blog. And now Satchmo: The Wonderful World and Art of Louis Armstrong is in on my wish list! Here's a bit about the book from Amazon:
Satchmo: The Wonderful World and Art of Louis Armstrong is a biography in the form of an art book. It tells the story of Armstrong's life through his writings, scrapbooks, and artworks, many of which have never been published before. Armstrong was the single greatest creative artist in the history of jazz and the American popular song. A true American original, he was prolific in coining colorful expressions that entered the lexicon; he wrote long, colorful prose pieces about his experiences; and he made hundreds of collages using marvelous photographs that capture archetypal scenes in the life of a jazz musician. Everything he did was an extension of his artistry.
And here is one of his collages:
Next on my wish list is:
The endlessly talented Dina Wakley's art journaling book: Art Journal Freedom has gotten rave reviews from everyone I've talked to! Here's a bit about the book from Amazon:
It's true, art journaling has no "rules" and is a safe place for free expression of your one-of-a-kind life. But knowledge is power and knowing the "rules" of color and composition gives you the freedom to use and break them willfully to create the effects you want. Dina shares these principles in a fun and approachable way with dozens upon dozens of unique journal pages to show you just some of the many possibilities.
Here's a peek inside the book:
I have always loved Dina's use of silhouettes, stencils, and her fabulous handwriting!
Last but not least, I want this book:
Susan Lenart Kazmer is probably my favorite jewelry artist on the planet. Her book Resin Alchemy looks so fabulous! From Amazon:
Resin Alchemy offers detailed step-by-step technique tutorials on using resin, from the basics of mixing and pouring to using bezels and key metalworking techniques that expand design options….Learn how to incorporate stories, words, meaningful images, and more in the layers of your resin jewelry. Susan shares her wealth of tips for collecting great found objects and for layering and encasing stories–in short, how to bring both great technique and great imagination to bear on jewelry making. Throughout the book, you'll enjoy easy step-by-step projects and finished pieces.
Here's a peek inside the book:
Her imagination and creativity blows me away!
I'll end with the same question I started with: what's on your crafty book wish list?
Thanks for stopping by!
I am so impulsive, that if a book crosses my path that I want I usually get it right away! Right now I am reading Flora Bowly’s Brave Intuitive Painting which might be the next best thing to going on an art retreat with her to Bali.
The other book I am digging is I Just Like to Make Things- from an artist agent but she talks about painting your joy which and collectors buy your joy. a wonderful concept.
Thanks for recommending the Dina Wakely book… will add that to my wishlist too.

Wow – I never knew that about Louis Armstrong. I may have to check his book out too! Thanks Julie. I have a list a mile long so I’ll try and narrow it down to my MOST wanted NEEEEEEEDs…
By a Women’s Hand – about women illustrators at the turn of the 20th century
The Drawings: Seventy Drawings – about Mucha’s drawings.
Collage Journeys by Jane Davies and Randall Plowman’s Collage Workbook.
And Pastels Unleashed by Margaret Evans… but like I say my list is groaning. These are at the top though 😉

Whatever it was it just increased by three! The one I didn’t see is the new one by Nick Bantock. I also have on my list 3 more hours in each day dedicated for ART only…sure Lori but if I get any more books I will need more time to explore them. sigh So much Fun to be had – so little time.

I was torn between Dina Wakley’s Art Journal Freedom book or 101 Mixed Media Techniques. I looked them both over the best I could with what was shown on Amazon and I finally chose 101 Mixed Media Techniques. Who knows maybe I will end up with Dina’s book too.

Julie, another book you might be interested in is Doubly Gifted: The Author as Visual Artist. It is out of print, but if you can find a used one, it’s totally worth the price! I think I paid about $80 for my copy several years ago. And yes, that is an outrageous price for a book, but this book is a jewel!
