Mixed Media Workshop: Prepping for Season 1

You guys, you know that I loooooove a challenge, right?  Well, last week I got to work on a totally awesome and exciting challenge!

Jenn Mason and I are getting ready to film the first season of our weekly online video series, "The Mixed Media Workshop."  I headed to Boston to work with Jenn for three intense days of prep.  It was a crafty sweatshop!

There was planning…

Planning

…and snacking…

Food

…and art supplies…

…and silliness…

We are filming in Colorado in two weeks and I've got heaps more art to make before then!

What is the Mixed Media Workshop?

It's a weekly web show that will go live at the end of April.  If you subscribe ($12/month) you'll get the weekly instructional videos AND access to lots of other great instructional video content!  Jenn and I are going to be covering all kinds of mixed media how-tos: jewelry, art journaling, book binding, felting, assemblage, collage, dying, screenprinting, free motion stitching, and on and on!  Each week there will be at least 3 techniques for you to play with — so at $12/month that boils down to about $1/technique!  Plus, there will be lots of ways for you to participate — sharing your projects and ideas with us!  I'm super duper excited about the whole darn thing!

As soon as the show is ready to go live and ready for sale, I will be sure to let you know!

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. Be a lamb and help us out?  Leave a comment letting me know what kinds of techniques and ideas you'd like to see Jenn and me cover on The Mixed Media Workshop!

  • Looks wonderful, and I wish you the best of luck and success. I’d like to see something like “beyond packing tape,” meaning some easy, but interesting and lesser known image transfer techniques.

  • I’d love to see how to incorporate photos in our art journal, or maybe even the whole photo transfer onto different materials … for me when I put a photo in my art journal it can get stuck to the other page … so I’d love to see how you successful print photos on other papers maybe? I am so on a budget, so appreciate that the mthly fee is reasonable priced!
Oh another thing … I would love to see a “how to get started” what are the basics to starting an art journal, what tools/supplies are a must. I just started following in Nov and am completely smitten with art journaling, but really get stuck when I try to do too much/too many products, etc. Whew … sorry for the loose stream of consciousness!

  • Hi Julie, It would be great to learn about incorporating fabric and traditional fabric crafts (e.g. quilting) in art journals. I would love to work on small embroidery/quilting pieces the way I work in my art journal (i.e. for my own pleasure and experimentation, not necessarily for display) and it would be great to know how to put them together in something as compact as a journal.

  • Oooooo! Sounds fantastic! Do some more on Gelli printing, rectangular and the new round one! The jewelry sounds great! How to cut your own stencils if you don’t have one of those amazing machines!
Also, how to decide what colors go where on your painted faces.

  • Hi guys,
this sounds great. I would love to see..
1)techinques that build on supplies so we don’t have to buy all new supplies each time. If we use gelli plates use them again the next week so we aren’t putting supplies away, then pulling them out two weeks later.
2)tips and tricks on how to use our space. I have a small (very small) craft space that I share w/my daughter and husband. I have to clean up after projects, drying space in non exsistant.
    3) one project each time that uses our basic supplies each cycle. the basic tool kit most crafters have out. this way everyone can do at least one project without having to go to the craft/art store before we can start.
    4) tips on buying. when I sit down to use my stencles I find I only have swirly floral stencles. it was what I was attracted to when I was buying. when I go back to the store, I’ve done it again!!
    Looks exciting!! Ann

  • Hi All. I ditto all of the above ideas. One suggestion would be for you to publish a snippet of the content of the next show, so we can assemble our supplies ahead of time and follow along. I find many times when I watch a show, then go to do it on my own, I have lots more questions. If we were somewhat prepared ahead of time, then we might get more out of the session. Repurposing anything is another great idea. Also will you have guest artists, or a panel discussion sometime with like-minded artitst to discuss their different approaches to a single type of art.
I saw the videos where you (Julie) and 3 other artists did on stencilling. It was great.

Love your online classes, Julie! Good work.

  • Funny you should ask…I was just thinking that I want to know more about Guache. I’m not even sure if I am spelling it right much less how and when, etc. Can’t wait to see what you do with this series because your Stencil set was just incredible! That little red felt ball full of nails is super cute but the picture with the grey felt and buttons, etc really really peaked my curiosity. More of that too, please.

  • Hi Julie, I love Gelli printing and journal making and like so many others on a tight budget so I would like to know how to make paper that I could print on or make into an art journal or a combination of the two. I love everyone’s ideas,so all of the above would be good too! I love Jenn’s and your art so I am sure it will be great whatever you do and great value

I just posted a pic of one of my pages in my art journal on my blog using your tip about using stencils to doodle with. Love that idea and tried it out last night. I credited you on my blog. Thanks for fabulous inspiration always!

  • I would love to see what is the difference between watercolor pens(markers)vs. watercolor paint. Also is there a special medium that should be used vice always having to use watercolor paper?? Also, more gelliplate. But my ultimate wish would be for you and jenn to come to the MD/DC area and do a full on mixed media weekend to celebrate my birthday countdown to 40!!!. I am sure I could round up a classroom full of peeps that would love to attend!!!! A girl can always wish!!!

I’d like to see you work with some Art Anthology colors. They are not quite like every other paint and would love to see what you can do with them.

  • I will sign up for this online series for sure. One topic I have a question about is not so much tecnhique related as it is process related….. With all the supplies to choose from, and all the colors, and all the techniques, and all the inspiration, and all the ideas — how do you decide what to focus on on any given day? Some days I am just so overwhelmed because there are TOO many ideas to choose from. My head is a bit noisy and it is hard to get quiet and decide what to focus on.

  • I’m with Lela – you will give us a link to sign up – right? I would like more in the arena of Altering and using old books for journaling…adding stitching on pages already bound in…binding stitches other than pamphlet stitch…really anything about making your/my own journals…so much paper so little time – that could actually be a class or a post…using papers etc in your stash (some are becoming vintage just because they are left over and ?)I am ready to sign up.

  • I am just starting out experimenting with Mixed Media products. It would be nice to start with a project for beginners on the video using specific products. Then building on the same project, progress to intermediate/advanced techniques over what the the beginners have done. That way you capture all levels of skills in each video. I’m interested in the $12 month videos. Will be looking for the offering.
