My Mom recently told me about something super cool that I had never heard of: Letterboxing.
What is Letterboxing?
From Letterboxing.org:
Letterboxing is an intriguing mix of treasure hunting, art, navigation, and exploring interesting, scenic, and sometimes remote places. It takes the ancient custom of placing a rock on a cairn upon reaching the summit of a mountain to an artform. It started when a gentleman simply left his calling card in a bottle by a remote pool on the moors of Dartmoor, in England.
Here's the basic idea: Someone hides a waterproof box somewhere (in a beautiful, interesting, or remote location) containing at least a logbook and a carved rubber stamp, and perhaps other goodies. The hider then usually writes directions to the box (called "clues" or "the map"), which can be straightforward, cryptic, or any degree in between. Often the clues involve map coordinates or compass bearings from landmarks, but they don't have to. Selecting a location and writing the clues is one aspect of the art.
Once the clues are written, hunters in possession of the clues attempt to find the box. In addition to the clue and any maps or tools needed to solve it, the hunter should carry at least a pencil, his personal rubber stamp, an inkpad, and his personal logbook. When the hunter successfully deciphers the clue and finds the box, he stamps the logbook in the box with his personal stamp, and stamps his personal logbook with the box's stamp. The box's logbook keeps a record of all its visitors, and the hunters keep a record of all the boxes they have found, in their personal logbooks.
I think it sounds super cool! There's a great resource list and a long list of FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) on the Letterboxing.org site if you're interested in getting started.
Here are a few cool images of Letterboxing that I found online:
Have you ever tried Letterboxing? I'd love to hear about your experiences!
Thanks for stopping by!

Have been doing letterboxing for years with my kids, they love it and always want to be the one who finds the stamp. I have been thinking about carving a “family” stamp for us. Now that I have been looking at your designs it gives me inspiration.

The modern version of letterboxing is geocaching (www.geocaching.com) which uses a handheld GPS unit or even your smartphone. Not nearly as “artsy” as the original letterboxing though.

I love letterboxing! That’s how I got into carving stamps, back around 2003. You’re so lucky to be in the Northeast – the motherlode of letterboxes – tho not so much in the City. A little hyperalert to anything out of place after that 2001 terror. I like letterboxing much more than geocaching, as that doesn’t have the stamps.

I LOVE letterboxing! Anytime we travel, we take our kit and try to find boxes. This has taken us to some fantastic sites. Places we would have never seen otherwise. Some of our favorites have been in cemeteries, because they have the best stories. We have carved a stained glass stamp and use the framed areas for our names and date. And this is NOT geocaching. The clues are so fun, with many being thoughtful and clever! With all the travel you do, Julie, you’d love this! We label each find with the place and date in our book. We’ve even found boxes hidden in urban areas, practically in plain sight! You’ll be amazed that there are treasures hidden and everyone else around you doesn’t know!

I love letterboxing! and geocaching too. Sometimes there are hybrid letterbox geocaches, which is fun also. I had my stamp made up by a company that creates custom self inking stamps from your design on paper, but I would like to carve my own one day.

our family letterboxed for a couple years…we found them in several states while we were traveling on vacation and around home too. the kids made stamps from plastic erasers and we collected some really cool stamped designs from the boxes we found.
The best part was seeing handmade stamps with a theme that related to the name of the box and the location. For instance on a dog walking trail we found a box with an adorable dog running with his leash trailing in the wind behind him.
It is a truly great adventure finding them in unique places, one was in a lighthouse, or hidden in a mini-golf course, in a stump along a trail, under a trash can, in a cemetery, and several at parks!
Enjoy the adventure!

My husband and I have been letterboxing for several years. We plan it into our vacations, making a list of letterboxes to find on the way and at our destination. It is a nice way to get off the beaten path and see things you normally wouldn’t. Even in your own neighborhood.

I have 2 journals full from letterboxing. I stopped doing it a few years ago because I had a full schedule and other activities. It is a great family activity and fun to find letterboxes while traveling too. You may see and do things you wouldn’t have done without a letterbox to find. Letterboxers are great people and there is a big community out there with in-person gatherings in various regions of the USA. There are letterboxes in other countries but I don’t know how active the participants are.

I just got my 4 year old granddaughter started on letter boxing (she’s been stamping for a year now) and she loves it. I sent two clues home with her dad for them to search for and he called all excited because one was just two doors down from their home! Kids love it – and adults too…

That’s so cool. We’ve done geocaching which is similar but some of the locations loaded can even be as close as your neighborhood. I like the art aspect of your version. Can’t wait to try it.
Hope you had a wonderful successful CHA.

I work in a public library in upstate NY and we have a letterbox on one of our shelves. It is always fun to talk with the folks who stop in just to find it – I have met some really nice people from all over and some of their hand-carved stamps are just amazing!

My husband’s grandmother would say ” it’s not a good day if you don’t learn any thing!!” Today I learnt something new…. I have NEVER heard of lettering or geocaching so both reading your site and all the comments have taught me something new…. I think having boys it would be wonderful to do with them, certainly going to do some homework on lettering as it seems more old school, just what my boys will enjoy!!! Thanks for sharing Julie

how interesting. i have never heard of this. i was suprised to find some sites (though several look inactive) in my neck of the woods in far northern NY. will have to check out western vermont also. however, this is not the time of year for this here, so will wait for spring. or maybe i will think about placing a box at some indoor location. anyway sounds like fun.

James and I have been letterboxing and we love it.
It’s especially fun to come on one when away on vacation, although we have found some fun adventures in our own town as well. We have not had stamps made but we do have several stamps that we use when we are signing others’ notebooks. Very fun and inexpensive hobby!
James and I have been letterboxing and we love it.

Yes! A while ago i started researching and to find some of those treasures… then we moved and I totally forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder 🙂
Our older son is into maps and coordinates – this is perfect!
Snowy greetings from Sweden!

We do Letterboxing where I live in Devon /Uk also. Its on the wonderful Dartmoor ( Home of The Hound of The Baskervilles ). There are ‘meets’ twice a year to buy new maps of clues and I have spent many an hour on the windswept Tors trying to find these elusive little things! So much fun!

Starting out, my sister and I letterboxed with a stamp that I carved and we placed a couple of letterboxes with their own carved stamps in them. Letterboxing is fun, but there are way more geocaches out there. Plus there are apps for the smart phones that connect to geocaching.com.

We go geocaching with my 6 year old son. Unbelievably enough there are quite a few caches within 1/8 mile of my house (we live in a heavily populated Long Island suburb). It is great fun and very exciting to discover these hidden treasures. We use http://www.geocaching.com, and it’s very helpful because people update it frequently. You should definitely try it!
