Since today is normally Art Journal Every Day day, I think it makes sense to post my favorite art journal pages from 2013. Next week I'll be back with the usual linky list. In the meantime, here are my faves from the past year:
There is a single overwhelming commonality isn't there? A large face.
Only one page doesn't have a face. And only two pages have small faces (less than half a spread). And that one large face seems to be the single dominant image on the pages, surrounded by journaling. As much as I have been trying to push myself past "just doing faces," I clearly love them. I enjoy creating them and I enjoy looking back at them! Maybe I should stop fighting my natural inclinations?
One other thing I notice is that the pages are dominated by blue/greens and pops of red. I try very hard to mix up my color schemes, but that's clearly what naturally appeals to me. Who knew?

Are they drawn from life, photos, or your imagination? I am taking your stamp carving class and enjoying it very much along with several other online classes you offer. I think your faces are all amazing, very diverse. I think a page is so much more alive when it has a face of some kind on it.

The only other similairty I noticed is that your favorite pages are all in the last half of the month, many around the 20s and 30th. Does that tell you anything? Maybe just that the first of the months are very busy for you, and the last half you can get back to what you love most, faces!

Not sure what Basquiat-esque is that Aloquin mentioned, but your faces though realistic in form have a sort of abstract look about them. I’ve never really seen that before and I like it. You always do fabulous work.

Perhaps inherent in the daily journaling space format, but I see fewer blocks of text, or circles of text, and can clearly notice the lines – vertical, horizontal, and even the diagonal ones. Just my 2¢.
And, J F-B, the other unavoidable: you are easily as awesome as any Red Ryder carbine-action, two hundred shot, Range Model air rifle out there! Here’s to a splendiferously inspiring, ridiculously satisfying and mind-blowingly good new year. 😉
