I'm a little sad that I'm away from home at the moment because I just watched this video and I'm desperate to try it out! DESPERATE!
Isn't that amazing?! The video is from Jane Davies, who is one of my most favorite collage artists. It's a technique she learned from Patti Brady.
I can't wait to get back to NYC and give it a try! How about you?
Thanks for stopping by!

That is so freakin cool! Have to try it as soon as I get this blasted work out of the way

I did it when I saw the video on Jane’s blog, with tar gel, and it works great! Now I want to try with gel medium and other Tulip colors. I love Jane’s work, too!

This is great! My head is spinning with ideas from this! The first is having my pre-school grandsons write their names in it. Maybe stick it on their bathroom mirror or windows.

I can’t wait to try this! I recently used plastic ziplock bags that I had painted on and printed with as a transparent collage element. I cut the bag in half and only used one side of it after printing with it, which is a technique I learned on Alisa Burke’s website. This looks like so much fun!

I used to do something very similar like this with preschool kids, but we used glue and paint to make stained glass art. Very cool, I never think to go back to my preschool techniques :).

Sooooo neat!!!!! Gotta’ try it,
Also, do you know that if you use a plastic “peel able” acrylic palette or a sheet protector, as a palette, to mix acrylic paints on, you can peel the dried skins and use them in collage. This is a Robert Burridge trick.
Thanks for the link to the video!

Elsie mentions you can do this with acrylic paint, too. I don’t have any Tulip or fabric paint, but I’d love to try out this technique, so maybe I’ll just go buy some Tulip paints:) Be sure to experiment Julie, and let us know how it turns out. Wishing you the happiest of holidays!

Julie,
Made me laugh a teeny bit because you say you struggle to grasp the abstract art look in your paintings and you will keep practicing.
I see you surrounded by awesome displays of abstract art, especially in Jane’s work. And your work is abstract edgy too, at times.
Abstract does not have an exact definition. I believe it is “felt’ by the artist in whatever medium used.
Not sure the point I’m trying to convey here, if any. Just sharing the thought I had when looking at Jane’s website. I think you’re trying to “practice” something that you already excel in!

I do love this technique. I’ve tried it and it’s a blast. Another one to try that is related, use the same kind of freezer paper with nothing on it, coat it with one layer of your gel medium, let it dry completely, then print something on it from your printer. It works! Depending on how good your ink is you can spread another layer of medium over the printer ink(some inks will smudge and some won’t, mine smudges a bit)It makes some really cool transparencies that way. And as soon as I’m recovered from Thanksgiving I’ll have a work surface to play on again. lol

yes…Yes…I too want to do this…now.
I like the statement….
“let it dry…thoroughly”. All of us impatient people must heed this warning…I know as I have tried to hurry things along before with not such great results.
