Doodling Helps Me Pay Attention

When I was in college I used to take notes covered in doodles.  It wasn't because I was bored.  The truth is, doodling helps me to focus and do a better job of listening.  Sitting in a meeting last night I couldn't help but let my pen wander.

  • I doodle at every PD. My notes become mini-artworks. I think the beauty of it is that as a teacher it has helped me understand that learning does not just have to happen by sitting still and listening.

  • Absolutely. I did this through high school and college. Thankfully I had a high school teacher tell me that some folks “hear” better that way and he didn’t take take it as personal insult.

  • I so agree. I have always used doodling as a way of helping me really focus on the words being spoken in a meeting. It has been a bit controversial at times – I worked for a boss who could not understand why I would need to draw to listen. It is nice to know other people use doodling like I do.

  • It is so wonderful that today we can honor this part of ourselves knowing that it is easier to listen when we are doodling than just sitting still. I used to have to take copious notes in college to listen and remember the lectures. Educators need to embrace this learning style and support students who work best this way instead of trying to conform to the “Bell Curve” learning style. Julie, thank you for bringing an authentic voice to this wonderful awareness and truth.

  • When I was in massage therapy school, they ran some tests to find out what type of learners we were. I was by far a visual and kinesthetic learning. I asked the instructor, since I am not an auditory learner, is that why I doodle when I listen to lectures. Sure enough, he confirmed that it helps you listen.

  • I doodled along with taking notes and I found that as I looked back through my notes later that I could picture myself “hearing” what was being said at the time I was drawing that particular doodle…if that makes sense! I also made mini illustrations in my notes to help me remember things. This was especially helpful in art history. πŸ™‚

  • Julie,I am taking this opportunity to thank you. I look forward to seeing you on my email every day. I love what you choose to share with us. You are so open and giving and I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate that. I have doodled for umpteen years and was always embarrassed when people would look and see what I was doing. Not any more. Have a glorious day. Hugs, penny

  • I know when I am doodling that others think that I am not listening =- but quite the contrary. I always bring my doodle journal with me to Bible Study. I get some looks but I really do listen better. And if I forget my doodle journal, I use my Starbucks cup or sleeve. Glad I am not the only one.

  • I now use doodling to help me focus on prayers. It is a technique taught by Sybl MacBeth in her book Praying In Color. It helps me pray for someone without words, or with them. Sometimes with color, sometimes without. It is soooo much better than going thru a wish list and really helps when you don’t know how to specifically pray for someone’s needs. Doodling, a wonderful tool.
