Last week I had the pleasure of being a guest on the Paperclipping Roundtable podcast.  It was a great conversation and definitely worth a listen.

While on the podcast, I spent my time doodling patterns.

I find that doodling helps me listen better.  It focuses me so that my mind doesn't wander.  And you never know what an idle doodle might turn into down the road.  There are several patterns there that have my brain hopping!  It's a win-win.  Not only did I listen more carefully to my fellow panelists, but I made art at the same time!

Are you a doodler?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Yes, and I find that it also helps me to focus on what I’m hearing. I had to tell teachers that so that they knew I was still listening.

  • I have taught my little clients to use doodling to help calm themselves down. (I do counseling with kids in school setting) It’s a great zen-like tool!

  • This was a wonderful podcast in that each guest had a different approach when working with paper/paints/ embellishments/ scrap books or art journals. I love all the differences in each guest and that they were able to share their ideas with us. It gave me insight into why I do love what I do with paper. I love being part of your “evolution” Julie. Thanks for sharing

  • The bottom left and middle doodle patterns reminded me that you are the person who introduced me to Zentangles. I saw you giving a little demo on a scrapbooking show several years ago and I was first astonished that zentangles existed and then I was hooked. I immediately ran for paper and pen and still love to do it for relaxation. Thank you, Julie! I love almost all of those designs. Off to hear the show.

  • Yep, doodling keeps the left side of my brain busy organizing, and allows me to listen better and not become distracted. I taught myself how to “behave” in school my doodling. Been using it ever since.

  • Hi Julie!
My daughter and I took a class with you at City QUilter—we made fabulous fabric cuffs. In looking at your doodling I am reminded of Zentangles. Are you familiar with tangling? Rick Roberst & Maria Thomas have some great material, as do others.
Hope to take another class with yo in the future!

  • This post makes me miss doodling! I used to doodle when I was a teen. Once, I used barbie gel that was different colors and made patterns on a sheet of plain paper with it, and it was pretty sophisticated looking. I am far from being an artist but it was fun. Nice post!
