I recently attended a collage workshop at The Ink Pad. It was a very free form day, in which instructor Lynn Gall gave us some words of wisdom and advice up front and then set us free to play for the rest of the day.
I made seven 8×8 collages:
All of these collages incorporate found papers with hand printed papers — Gelli prints, stamped papers (hand carved, of course), painted papers, and stenciled papers (much of it done on Deli Paper).
Looking at them I'm struck by the fact that my collage work always tends to be painterly. This was not a mixed media class, but in my mind paint & collage go together like peanut butter & jelly. I can't help myself when it comes to adding dabs and blots of paint absolutely everywhere!
I don't tend to do a lot of abstract work, so it was really good for me to get away from painting faces. In fact, I rather purposefully stayed away from incorporating any traditional focal images (with perhaps one exception) because I wanted to push myself to just use shape and color to create harmony and story.
I know which of these collages is my favorite, but I'm wondering which one is your favorite and why? I'd love to know!

My favorite is the one with the three red circles. I have no idea why, other than they are a surprise addition and they complete the composition.

Julie, They are all wonderful. But, my favorite is #7… I love the combination of the stamped image and the writing.. and the varied color combination. Simply beautiful!

So…. I am out on a limb here with my choice of #4. I do like the focal image, funereal to say the least but it evokes several things for me. It is the one with the strongest story in my eyes. I like the positioning of light and dark reminding me that life and death are co-founders. The little scrap of map has me wondering if this is the place they met life or their deaths? I like the linear composition and the richness of texture. The placement of the heart speaks volumes to me about laying a loved one to rest weather we know them or not. I like them all but the two I would hang on my wall are No. 1 and No.3. They are peaceful to my eye with just the right amount of texture to make me want to keep looking at them. I’d likely see something different each time I looked. Nice collages. You’ve inspired me to try something new,
