I've been reading the Another Lunch blog for a few months now.  The blogger shares photos and how-tos on the adorable bento box lunches she packs for her kids.  Here's an example:

So cute!  I love those little animal sandwiches.  There are actually a ton of bento-focused websites.

Like Bentology:

And Bento School Lunches:

And CuteOBento (which is entirely in Japanese):

A google search will bring up about a million more!  The food art ranges from cute to jaw droppingly amazing.

But people packing lunches aren't the only ones having fun with their food.  Via the blog Colossal, I stumbled onto two very cool food artists.

Mike Breach "paints" on coffee before serving it to you.

Coffee-1
You can watch a really good short video and see the original post here.

And artist Hong Yi recently created a 30-day long food art project with some fabulous creations.

Red-9
You can see many more (and larger) photos in the original post here.

Are you a food artist?  Do you long to be?  I'm still on the "getting things to taste good" part of cooking.  Some day I hope to graduate to "tastes good & looks good."  Something to aspire to!  :)

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I wonder if children who receive lunches that are that creative feel ripped off when they get a plain PB&J on a busy morning?
Needless to say those are super cool (especially the coffee art).

  • Not really interested in doing food art, though it’s fun to look at. Like you, I just hope it tastes good!

  • I have “decorated” oatmeal for over 45 years. I use a light sprinkle of sprinkles and my kids and now grandkids eat it up! Place big flattened blob of sweetened oatmeal on plate (no milk to water it down) and then make flowers, houses, starry night, anything. As they grow up, they do their own. AND decorate a deviled egg – just put it upside down on a piece of bread, cut around the bread forming the bottom, then pipe cream cheese icing in colors on the smooth white egg bottoms that are now tops. Kids love them but are shocked the first time since they are NOT sweet but look like little cakes. Too fun! Not really play since I thought of it as a way to get them to eat good stuff.

  • Totally adorable creations and presentations! Those little egg chicks in the noodle nest are killing me! My daughter loves all things Japanese and had a bento lunch box for years, but I never got that creative with the presentation. Now she puts together little picnic snacks in bentos with her girlfriends and they go hang out at the park some Saturdays. She cuts apple slices into adorable bunnies.

  • Julie–I love this post! I have two Tupperware bento-style lunchboxes with hinged lids that I use all the time. A friend of a friend started a fabulous business in her home, and her website is easylunchboxes.com. You must check out her musical lunch video with Barry Williams! In other news–I think I told you how awesome your embroidery is, and today I posted a blog about my love of embroidery floss…you might enjoy it. Have a great day dear. –Sandy Leigh

  • I love these links. I will check them out. My experience with food art is decorating cupcakes (a la Hello, Cupcake style) & birthday cakes. I once made pigs in a blanket shaped like turtles http://xnomads.typepad.com/blog/2011/01/simple-things-cute-food.html and made traditional Chinese Qing Ming pastries using pretzel dough – tutorial here: http://www.simpleasthatblog.com/2011/09/friday-craft-day-edible-chinese-folk.html#; I suppose I do love food art, though I have yet to venture into Bentos. Oh and making art with pancake batter is fun too!
