Ranger Dylusions Designer Challenge: CHA Winter 2013

I was absolutely delighted when Dyan Reaveley asked me to contribute to Ranger's CHA Booth Designer Challenge.  We were each sent one color of her Dylusions spray ink, plus black and white, and a canvas board, along with some tags and a few of her stencils.  The rules were that the board had to be vertically oriented and that we were not to use other colors than the one we were sent.  I love mixing lots and lots of colors, so it was hard to think what to do with only one color (plus black and white).  Here's what I came up with:

Afro-wm
Afro-wm
Afro-wm
Afro-wm
I used the tags and some masking tape to create texture.  Stencils added pattern (a.k.a. visual texture) to the piece.  All in all, I'm quite pleased with how she turned out.  I tried my best not to overwork her face (a little problem of mine).  She looks strong and beautiful to me — an enviable combination!

Thanks for stopping by!

ETA: The color I received was green.  Any other colors are purely from collaged material (tags and a bit of ephemera — note the Korean newspaper) collaged underneath the painting.  :)

  • Not that I don’t like the other faces you have created but this one is much stronger, more expressive!

  • What an interesting challenge. I agree that she is a very strong figure, more like a portrait of a mover-and-shaker then just a likeness. I’d like to meet her!
How many tags did she provide? What were the stencils?

  • I think she is one of my favorite faces that you have created. How did you manage to get just one color from one spray and black and white sprays?

  • I LOVE this! So I get the color you received was green and that the manilla tag made the other color in the piece. Absolutely stunning! I love the writing- not that I can read it which I know is intentional- I love the pattern it makes on your pieces. I want to assume this is an african american woman- I want to see myself in the piece and thank you for making sure to include such a face (and hair style) in your collection- so many would do otherwise. Hugs to you- your work is moving forward and taking ME with it! Also, I’m loving the adventures in arting series- it’s very inspiring!

  • Love your art Julie! I am confused though as to what your one color was. Was it yellow? Did you create the green from yellow, black and white?….no, the green is too bright… im definitely perplexed but that IS what good art does…keeps you thinking. Problem is curiosity did kill the cat. Please share with us the process.

  • I have researched to see if the dylusion ink has a special characteristic that would cause another color to be extracted from the initial color during the artistic process. I couldn’t find the explanation in the Ranger site.
I do see yellow and blue….which together make green….so perhaps the ink breaks apart into its primaries somehow. Is that what’s being demonstrated here? Thanks.

  • I think what you are seeing as blue is green and black mixed together, because there isnt any blue.  The yellow comes from the tag.

  • Thanks much, Julie. Upon further inspection of the close-ups, I can now see that the blues (…could be my monitor settings) which are in the first photo are grayish in the others.

  • when I go back to look at it i can see the yellow tag. I also find that, that pop of color is what makes the painting so strong. Along with all the journaling it makes me think her right (creative side of her head) is trying to fire up the more calm and steady side of her thinking. Both sides acting in harmony with each other. I think she is looking for the good in something but hasn’t found it yet, but she is definitely optimistic!
