I'm starting a new project:
You might be able to guess the gist of the project from the information above. ;)
Without any time limit, rules, or concrete plans, I am publicly declaring that I am going to create art on 100 canvases and share them all — good and bad — on this blog.
My Goals:
- To become more comfortable with working large.
- To push myself out of "pretty."
- To experiment with colors I don't normally use.
- To stop being so literal and try some abstract compositions.
- To get better at making art through practice and experimentation.
- To have a substantial body of work.
- To learn more about painting.
My Obstacles:
- This is a small apartment. I'm not sure where I'm going to put 100 canvases.
- Fear.
Here is my first canvas:
I think he is very striking. And I love the way he fades in and out of the background.
This canvas has actually had a very long life. I painted the current image over this image:
Which was actually a paint-over of this:
This is this canvas's third life!
For a long time I chased "pretty." Right now I find myself interested in pursuing "interesting" or "arresting" images instead. I'm excited to see where I'll be at the end of this 100 canvas journey!

Great challenge! My problem is the speed at which I work. I would like to find a way to speed it up, but I can’t figure it out! 🙂 I’ve ordered a bunch of panels, small panels, to try and push working a bit faster and playing, we’ll see if that helps. When I have a stretched, I feel almost like I’m hoarding the canvas. Maybe that’s why I’m working so slow?

Very ambitious project. I should take a page from your book as I am the slowest painter ever. Of course if I had your talent, I might be speedier! I looked carefully at each of the paintings but the one that really commanded my attention was the last one. It is so bold and wonderful.

I have to say the third is the BEST of the three. It’s got more energy and technically speaking, it is better painted as well.

Wow. What a great idea and a great painting. I have seen “100 Canvases: Canvas #2” as well and I think your new style of painting faces is amazing. I don’t mind the older faces, but ‘pretty’ is kind of boring to me. These new paintings are so much more interesting.
Maybe one day, when I’m brave enough, I might even join in the 100 Canvases challenge with you. Maybe.

I can so relate to what you are saying, because I have recently transitioned (for the 2nd time) from my art journal to loose sheets of watercolor paper. The intention was to transition to canvases (of which I have purchased 3), but I guess I chickened out and will first work on watercolor paper for a bit. 🙂
