Thirteen years ago, on this day, I moved to New York City.  I thought it was just for a nine-month-long internship.  These days, it's looking more and more like it's for a lifetime.  I have mixed feelings about that.  I adore New York City, but it's not an easy place to live.  I made a scrapbook page to sort out my thoughts:

NewYorkProCon-wm
I kept the page super simple — white cardstock, some stamping, two photos, and two simple handwritten lists.  And, I love it!  I think it's elegant and straight forward and expresses where I am right now.

Please note that I caught the edge of the "P" stamp and got a big black mark.  Did I start the page over?

Nope.

In the end, it doesn't matter.  The page still looks clean.  It doesn't affect the readability of the journaling or the subtitles.  And now it's clear that a human being made the page and not a machine — always one of my goals.

It felt good to create this page and write down those thoughts that have been bouncing around in my head.  The pro list is still longer than the con list, so I think we'll be staying in NYC for a while!  Do you have a pro and con list about where you live?

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Love this page! I’ve done a camping list like this one ha ha. Con of camping – airbeds that go down. We now use mattresses. My sister-in-law is currently in NYC – wonder what she’s doing now? Bye for now, have a great day!

  • I recently came to the conclusion that my style is “lazy” so I love to see and appreciate simple designs that pack a punch. Love this! 🙂

  • This is how I feel about living in NYC also! I moved here for law school and am not yet sure how long I’ll be staying… well, leaving probably would mean just moving out of the city and commuting in, but still! I love this page, what a creative idea!

  • I like your layout and honestly did NOT see the P smudge until after you mentioned it. The simple layout is great.
Pretty sure I wouldn’t last long in NYC, being a country girl at heart, I NEED space to roam. Peace, Donna

  • I love the page 🙂 It is very simple and elegant. As for pros and cons for where I live… I’ve never thought about it. It’s the perfect place for me at the moment, especially as I’m at university, and it’s such a great city in the cleanest and safest part of the UK. At the moment, I’m staying put 🙂

  • I didn’t see the smudge next to the “P” until you pointed it out. I must admit that I would have had to start over with it. (I’m still learning to let go.)
The biggest con of where I live is that there are no thai food restaurants around.

However, one of the main perks is that I’ve always been close to my grandparents (now gone), my parents, and blessed by the sense of ‘community’ in my church. Great idea for pages! Thanks for all your hard work–I SO enjoy your blog and art!

I wish my husband and I did that — we thought about living in Boston before we got married but decided against it bec. of the expense…but as you grow older and have kids everything just gets more expensive, not less! Wish we did it back then. I live in the country-ish suburbs of NH now — I like it here but if I made a list like yours it would pretty much be the exact reverse (NOT having all your pros would be all my cons!…)

  • I love reading your blog and Kelly Purkey’s for a taste of the big city life. It’s good to evaluate where you are (literally and figuratively) periodically, since it’s easy to just keep on with the status quo and not realize you need a change. I’ve been to New York and I’ve lived in small cities. Now I live in a small town with one traffic light and don’t want to live anywhere else.

  • Yeah, I love pages like this, too.
I thought about what you said the other day about Project Life possibly negating your need to scrapbook. And I’m glad to see that, for the moment, it hasn’t. I always love seeing your scrapbook pages (in addition to your journal pages).
I’m doing PL as well and scrapping a whole lot less. I still love scrapbooking, though. And I thought, why couldn’t I just put any pages that I DO make right in my Project Life binder? I usually do “moment” rather than “event” pages – although, I guess that really wouldn’t matter. Either way, the pages would be inserted during the week I made them and, well, that’s life! ….Something to consider.

I have since been scrapbooking the trip and I am also keeping it really simple, using white, black or gray cardstock and no patterned paper. I love your photos. They really pop on the white paper. Thanks for the inspiration! Love your blog.

  • Lists are always a great way to sort out your feelings, and you’ve done it soooo creatively.

  • Julie,
I love your Pro/Con page…what a good way to approach and examine a topic in a very different way.
You always come up with great pages and I have always liked your style.
Thank you for your tireless blogging as it is all very interesting and I like the different sections and topics that you do on a weekly basis.

  • Being a retired public school teacher in (granted) Ohio, I’m saddened that everyone doesn’t feel good about public education. I know what you mean in a big city. But, this really needs to change; we’re a nation!! I love your style and blog and what you’ve given me in art journaling and just needed to get this off of my chest. Thanks

  • I do all sorts of pro and con lists for things. I used to live in chicago, and the cons seriously outweighed any pros. Lots of moves later, we ended up here in Vermont. Even in a place so pretty, there are always a ton of cons too. There’s probably a perfect place, but I’d probably have to win the lottery to find it! 🙂

  • Gee, I thought that P had “character”. Isn’t it amazing how we humans can be so self critical? Lately I’ve been re-reading Fred Babb’s “Go Into Your Studio and Make Stuff” He helps me let go of that critical voice and just be happy in the process, letting it take me on a journey. If you’ve never read it, try and find a copy somewhere. The posters are great but the text puts forward his philosophy. It is out of print and since his death in 2006 it has gotten pricey. I hope that the publisher will re-issue it.
I have only recently found your blog but I really appreciate your sharing your work and your encouragement to the rest of us. Be not afraid! It’s only Art. 😉

  • I know that conflict all too well. Add to the list that having a career in NYC means very little time for pursuing personal creativity or craft (unless you’re in the industry) and there is, in the art world at least, an incredible bias toward scrapbooking dismissing it as cliche.
But there are public schools that are relatively good though where else in the country does finding the right kindergarten become a second full time job?. So glad were just past that …
