Today I've invited three awesome paper artistes to play with the beautiful Lotus Blossom Stencil (available in 12×12 and 6×6):
Those super cool paper artistes are:
- Nathalie Kalbach: Nat is a messy, creative, paint and mist happy gal from Germany. As you know, she and I dreamed up the Second Floor Challenge together. She teaches all over the world and is a wonderful instructor!
- Jenny Barnett Rohrs: Jenny is the creative genius behind "Craft Test Dummies" — a craft supply review and how-to site. She recently reviewed my online class "30 Days in Your Journal." She is one of the hardest working ladies in the crafty biz!
- May Flaum: May is a long-time teacher at Big Picture Classes and author of two scrapbooking books (most recently Scrapbook Workshop). She is a creative soul who loves paint, ink, and experimenting with new techniques!
The Lotus Blossom stencil is one of the four stencils I designed for CHA-Winter 2012 that is meant to layer. I wrote a post (including an instructional video) about them back in January.
The Lotus Blossom has four designs on one stencil that you can layer in any combination. On these tags you can see the difference between the two outline designs:
One is "plain" and the other I've been calling a "faux woodcut." I think they're both cool.
This is definitely one of my favorite stencils from the new release. When the new stencils first arrived In immediately made these layered art journal pages:
It's such a beautiful design (if I do say so myself) and super easy to use! Last weekend my brother's girlfriend's niece came over to "make a lily pad."
As you can see, she put the Lotus Blossom stencil to good use! I gave her Distress Ink (cleans up easily with water) and a cosmetic sponge to use (dab up and down) and she had a great time and got a wonderful result to boot! She was comfortable using scissors by herself to cut the cosmetic sponge when changing colors, but smaller children may need adult assistance with that…or more sponges.
As for me, I painted over an old page in my art journal to create something new:

This stencil wins a place on the top of my list of favourites now, I absolutely LOVE anything to do with Lotus blossoms, and this stencil is so clever!! If I had to pick one craft I would have to say art journalling, I find it so fun and therapeutic!

Is mixed media a craft? That would be my choice. And there’s alot you can throw in there! You can even do mixed media on a card. Is that cheating? I don’t think so!

Maybe this answer is cheating, but my “one craft” would have to be scrapbooking because I feel I am not only preserving memories, but I can incorporate tons of different techniques into just this “one” craft – even mixed media! 🙂 Love this new stencil!

If I could choose one craft it would be fiber art…which I ,have done for years…but since finding Journal Art techniques I have been able to add paint, stencils, paper, stamps, gesso, and even molding paste to my fiber art pieces…it allows me to experiment with my fabrics, change them, alter them and still stitch and create.

I would choose scrapbooking because it isn’t ‘just’ a craft, it’s your history and heritage as well as a creative outlet. It has more value for future generations than ‘stuff’ does. And you can still incorporate other crafts like fabric if you are a quilter, paint if you are a traditional artist, etc.

I would choose scrapbooking because it isn’t ‘just’ a craft, it’s your history and heritage as well as a creative outlet. It has more value for future generations than ‘stuff’ does. And you can still incorporate other crafts like fabric if you are a quilter, paint if you are a traditional artist, etc.

It’s the only way I’m able to get my feelings out. Afew months ago I wasn’t able to move my hands I was in so much pain. What hurt more was not being able to paint. But i didn’t let that stop me little by little I would push myself to try to paint in my art journal it would take me a week to finish a page. I have good days and bad days. Doctors still can’t tell me what’s going on with my hands but nothing in the world is stopping me from creating.

You put a tricky question there – my grey cells are running hot trying to find an answer. Considering my stashes of a multitude of things, I am choosing something that I call mixed-media painting. Painting is my latest love, and I realize more and more that most of my pieces tend towards collage.

I would sew! No doubt. I love papercraft but there is only so much room for altered art, scrapbooks, etc. in my house. Love cardmaking but I only seem to give my cards to people I know won’t chuck them because I get attached to things I make. Great Lotus stencil! As far as crafts, I’ve tried many and tend to do several at one time. I have art journals, gourd art, assemblages, a beading project and paintings going on right now. My favorite is the one I’m currently working on. Hope that counts. 🙂

I am going to say scrapping only because I can include mixed media in my Project Life and I can throw some ATCs into the photo pockets and then I will be able to get more bang for my buck since I am supposed to be choosing just one! I could never give up art journaling now. I used to do atc art because I liked that it was fast and I was on to a completely different style of work on the next card. If I had to choose just one craft it would have to be mixed media. There is so much more freedom, not contraints/rules, a great way to just play & create!

I wrote a long response this morning that didn’t register…but my favorite has to be watercolor. I love that it can be soft and translucent, or crisp and opaque. I love that you can go back into it even after it dries by wetting it up again. It is forgiving and loving, and I love it!

I would paint with acrylics!! You can really “get into it and go in the zone”. It is a good way to show yourself in a painting, with unlimited colors and designs!

Well, I also like mixed media! And photography – I’ve been printing some photos and then altering/painting on them…it’s something new to try for me! And love this stencil!!

Hi Julie, thanks for the chance to win the stencils. This is a hard question to answer but I would have to say Scrap booking because you can still incorporate mixed media into it.

i think i would choose watercolour, if only to get more experienced at it. I also find it to be versatile – i can use it for backgrounds, or i can use it for colouring drawings. I love love LOVE this stencil….
