If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here.  Please read this post first.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post.  Thanks!

I can't quite remember when I discovered Judy Wise's blog but I immediately fell in love with her overstuffed journal pages.

So beautiful!

She is the one who inspired me to start journaling daily — a discipline I began about three years ago with some breaks here and there.  Her blog is great, but she rarely talks about how she creates and there are never tutorials.  So I kept watching her travel schedule, hoping that she'd end up teaching somewhere on the East Coast.  No such luck.  So I continued to plod along in my journal, finding my own way.  But then she announced that she was going to be teaching an online journaling class!  I signed up immediately and without a second's hesitation over the $100 price tag.

Today is the last day of class.  I have enjoyed it thoroughly.  There are some things that I wish were different.  But I suppose that's always true.  Mostly I'm eternally grateful to Judy for inspiring me to get back into the habit of daily journaling.  I had fallen off the wagon a bit in recent months.

It turns out that Judy and I use many of the same techniques!  At first I was surprised.  I think of her as a very high and mighty artist and was shocked to discover that we play in the same way.  But then I thought about it.  Why wouldn't that be so?  I'm drawn to her work, so we're clearly drawn to the same things.  Plus there are only so many ways to skin a cat, so to speak.  But she has a unique spin on many classic techniques and I've definitely been inspired.  And she has piqued my interest in plaster — something I know absolutely nothing about.  As a result I just bought her book Plaster Studio

PlasterStudioBookCover
…and I'm looking forward to reading it and exploring a whole new medium.

I thought I would share some of the pages I've made while in class.

In the beginning I stuck very closely to what Judy was teaching.  She told us to collage images and words and draw a face and so I did.

This next page is a complete and total lift of Judy's page, down to the weird little arms and hands reaching for something.

But as class went on I started straying from her style and started trying to work the lessons into my own style, with mixed results.

And even though I didn't like the pages I kept at it — trying to find a way to mix her Judy-style with my Julie-style.

I found my mind populated with fresh new ideas that I wanted to try out…

…like this little flappy page inserted into my book.  And I have a bunch of new pages prepped and waiting for their daily entries:

Inspiration is a wonderful priceless thing. And during the course of this class I found myself reminded that taking a class is not just about a transfer of information. Taking a class is about receiving a spark from the teacher that lights your own wick.

Here's the linky list for this week:

Thanks for stopping by!  Wishing you a happy holiday weekend!

  • I LOVE this post and reading about you taking a class. How inspring to know who got you started in your journey. I can’t wait to read more about her.
You were the teacher that gave me that spark in 30 days of art journaling class. I’ve been hooked ever since and hope to do this forever.
Thanks for the info on the giveway, I would love to read this now after all the great reviews it got.
I enjoyed all these pages you shared here today esp. the red/white one and the girl after that one. Hoory for premade pages.
I’m sharing by blog link here since the linky doesn’t always work for me.

  • I’m an admirer of Judy ever since I discovered her a few years ago, she inspires so much people! I love her encaustic work too but I don’t dare going that way (I have too much on my plate without that… I don’t think I will be good at it either so I better stay away from it) Can’t wait to see how you will like the plastering! (Oh, and funny: Judy is just above you in my blogroll!)

  • This week I tried a new class: “Paper Tweets” by Lynn Gall, which was held at The Ink Pad store in NYC. Lynn explained that the postcard is the original “tweet” in paper form, and that one of her inspirations is Lenore Tawney who made a series of amazing postcard collages between 1960-1990 (LT’s book “Signs on the Wind” is available on amazon.com btw!). Anyway we each made about 5-6 postcard collages and I’m going to see if I can mail one! We used 4×6 watercolor paper and layered antique ephemera pieces on the substrate. Lynn gave each of us an excellent collage pack which opened up the topic of using ephemera in a way that is upbeat and really fun fun. The mailing side has the standard postal requirements for addressing and postage. Really enjoyed this class – I LOVE POSTCARDS!

  • Hi Julie. I didn’t realize that you were in Judy’s journaling class. I too signed up after having taken her encaustic class last fall. I also have the plaster book and I am not sure if you are aware, but there is an eBook that goes with that book — it is not the same as the hard book but is all of the videos that she and Stephanie did for an online class like we just took on journaling. (Except maybe even more information it seems. Or it could be that I knew less about the plaster class than journaling.) I would highly recommend the ebook if you really think you might be interested in trying the plaster. The eBook is available on Stephanie’s blog for $100 — a little pricey, but so worth it. I just thought I would share the availability if you didn’t know. I found it more helpful than the book. But I like to watch videos to learn. They really help me understand exactly what the author means. Take care and Happy Easter.

  • Wow, Julie–your recent journaling class inspired me to take Judy’s class! I didn’t know you too were in it!
I’m a bit behind because I started a new job a few weeks ago so I need to catch up a bit.
I love your pages, by the way!

  • Julie, I loved reading about you taking a class and doing just what I did a few weeks ago when I took YOUR class (30 Days…). I, too, followed what you did closely and then gradually began adding my own touch to what you showed us. The flickr post I linked above (#19) is my first spread done entirely on my own. I appreciate all that you learned from Judy initially. I too, am really loving multiple journal entries (and lots of writing) on one spread and will continue to do that for a long time. I feel more confident in my other journal(s) as well, because of YOUR class! Thanks! Hope your have a meaning-full weekend! 🙂
