So I sat down and decided that I'd put together a quick scrapbook page and snap some photos along the way so that you could take a peek into my process.

1

I started with this piece of cardstock.  I had previously drawn and painted the leaves on it for another project and then abandoned that project.  I saved it thinking I would use it at some point.  And today is that point.

I took my photo…

2

…and placed it on the cardstock along with a paper ruffle made for a previous project.  I didn't like the ruffle or how bright the leaves were with the black and white photo.

So I took some gesso…

3

…and scraped it all over the left side of my paper.  And I decided to add some more color.

I used an eyedropper (my new favorite tool thanks to my friend Nat)…

4

…to add two colors of Adirondack Color Wash.

Then I blotted off the excess…

5

…and tried my photo on the left.

Then I tried it on the right…

6
…and decided that I like it better on the left.

I auditioned a doily…

7

…and decided that I liked it better when one edge was folded down.

8

So I removed the photo and stitched the doily to my background.

9

I auditioned a border stamp by placing it on my layout.

10

It looks good to me!  So I stamped it.

Then I decided to adhere my photo so that I could do a bit more stamping, but this time over the photo.

11

But first, did you notice that I slid the photo over a bit? I wanted to be able to see all that fancy stitching I did on the doily.

Now I'm ready to add more stamping!

12

I stamped with two different hand carved stamps that are chevron-esque.

Then it was time to add a title.

13

I used some hand carved alphabet stamps to do the trick.

And then I made a mistake.

14

I stamped the banner stamps (also hand carved) onto some really thin paper on top of my layout and the ink went through the paper!  Eeek!

I decided to embrace the mistake and tried to make it look a bit more purposeful by adding…

15

…the most magic of all supplies: gesso!

Then I cut out my banners…

16

…and stitched them in place.

I typed up some journaling and…

17

…stitched it onto my layout.

At this point I took a look at my layout and decided that it was too centered.  I wanted to add something to the edge to create some tension.

18

You can see that I chose to stamp some of those hand carved chevrons.   I also added a few splats of black watercolor paint.

But then the stamping felt too dark to me.  Too much.  So I used my very favorite supply…

19

…and scraped some gesso right over the top to tone that black ink down.

20

Hmmmm…but something still isn't right.  What is it?

Ah, not enough color!  So I added a small color photo:

At35-sm

And now my layout definitely feels complete!  Here are some close-up peeks:

At35Detail2-sm

At35Detail3-sm

At35Detail4-sm

I hope you enjoyed this peek into my process!

Here is a list of most of the supplies that I used:

The scallop border stamp I used is no longer available and my sewing machine is a discontinued model as well.  The sewing machine you see listed is not the one I use, but it has excellent reviews on Amazon and it's fairly cheap, so I thought I'd give you the option.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Thanks for sharing the process. I am wondering what you typed your
journaling on? Was it tissue paper? The banner is on vellum?
or tissue paper also. Just curious. I love it.

  • Nope, I dont adjust my tension.  In general, I try not to mess with my sewing machine tension at all.  A lot of tension issues can actually be fixed with a new needle and better quality thread.
