Ten Days of Jury Duty = Finding Time for Arting

For the past ten days I have had Grand Jury Duty.  That means that I've been going to the courthouse Monday-Friday since October 25.  In between cases there is some dead time. Some people read, other people watch TV, call their offices, type on their laptops.  Can you guess what I did with my down time?

I made art, of course!

I spent several days sketching.  And while I don't think there's anything wrong with posting the sketches I did of people on the jury, the whole thing is supposed to be secret, so I'm going to err on the side of not showing them.  I will, however, share this bit of lettering I did:

Juryduty
Best travel sketch kit ever: tiny Moleskine watercolor journal, mechanical pencil, set of 4 Pitt Pens, Sakura watercolor set including a waterbrush, Staedtler white eraser, and it all fits in a little pouch I stitched up.  Perfect!

Of course, I forgot a rag, so I ended up using the back of my hand to clean my paintbrush:

When I got bored of drawing, I did some stitching.  But I didn't make anything of consequence.  Mostly I worked on an older piece that is still very much in progress:

JuryDutyQuilt
But it filled the time.

My very favorite activity was carving stamps!  I made quite a few repeating image stamps.  Believe it or not, this is just a small sampling:

I managed to get a lot done in little bursts of time.  If I'm prepared I can always find time for art.  The other members of the jury loved seeing what I was doing.  It was a wonderful conversation starter.  And it was also a great way to cope with some of the ickiness of the cases we were hearing.

Where in your life is there time for a little bit of art?

  • Haha, I’m so glad I’m not the only one who does that wipe the paintbrush on my hand thing when you forget a rag or paper towel.
Really love the last two repeating stamps. Especially the next to last one. I would love to have me that stamp. lol.

  • This is a great reminder of what can be done with a small kit. I love keeping my hands busy during waiting times and after seeing what can be done in small chunks of time in your art journaling class, I’m planning to make myself a small on-the-go kit too.

  • Well, great work. So much for the eye to study. I love the thing that happens when we look back on our pieces later, we see new possibilities and continue to add more spice and brilliance to the growing stamp collections. As my personal time gets less and less due to home care for my mom, I can do a few small things in the middle of the night (as long as I’m not working on something that depends on being color-correct). During the day I look at your online blog (thank god for it) and continue to stay engaged even if not using my hands to make something until much later…

I find time in my art journal when I stop at Starbucks for my chai latte. It is a great way to have others stop by the table and have an art conversation. So many folks have their souls fed by art in their lives.

  • Julie, simply magnificent! I am a police officer and a lover of all things art. I keep a small Moleskin and a couple markers in my car with me. When I feel overwhelmed or need a release all it takes is simply a few moments to draw or journal in my Moleskin and then I’m ready to go and rejuvenated. I totally understand the concept of working art into our lives however we can. Thanks for sharing.

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome!!! I ditto what the others said about an online stamp-carving workshop!! I’ve wanted to learn it for a while, but am totally intimidated by it. I have weak hands too, due to neuropathy and rheumatoid arthritis – so I’m not even sure I’d be able to do it…but I’m very curious about it. I do love making my own Styrofoam stamps (as you’ve seen…), but they’re easy…the heat tool cuts through them like butter. But they can’t get the detail like rubber can. You are an awesome inspiration!

In case I run out of band-aids is there any chance you’ll be bringing your stamps to market?

All I did on jury duty was sit and read a John Grisham book. And the book stunk and I didn’t even finish it.
I bought myself a vintage “train case” to carry projects around with me, but right now I’m not really going anywhere so it stays home in the studio.

  • Julie, you are amazing.
All I did on jury duty was sit and read a John Grisham book. And the book stunk and I didn’t even finish it.
I bought myself a vintage “train case” to carry projects around with me, but right now I’m not really going anywhere so it stays home in the studio.

  • OMG! how do you do that intricate carving? i guess i need to practice, practice, practice. i am still trying to carve some simple stuff without messing it up. guess one of the joys of living in small towns is that when on jury duty we usually have to go in only on the days they actually select. they call us when we need to come in and the rest of the time we go our merry way.

  • Julie, I join the stamps fanclub–yours are wonderful.
How did you get the carving tool into the courthouse? Here in AZ they check you for forbidden items and wouldn’t let my hubby enter until he put his pocket knife back in the car! Can you take the carver on an airplane?

  • Your stamps are gorgeous!! I love seeing what artists take with them for the on the go “arting”. I have to admit that although I do pack a little kit and my journal with me when I know I’m going to be out and about with time to spare, I’m usually shy to actually journal in public and end up journaling for only a few minutes before putting everything away :p
