Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza!  Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop!  Each post comes with a giveaway.  Leave a comment answering the question-of-the-day and you might be the winner of that day's featured stencil in both 6×6 and 12×12!  Comments will remain open on this post for seventy-two hours.  The winner will be announced after that.  In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase any of the stencils there are many in-person and online shops to choose from.  See a complete list here.

Today I'm going to share a little bit about TCW229 Rain:

Rain
You get three sizes of drops in a single stencil!  Kind of cool, if I do say so myself.

For my first project I traced and cut two sizes of the raindrops…

2drops
…and then paper pieced this kind of cool pattern:

Piecedarea
I had planned to make it into a card, but it was just so pretty I decided to incorporate it into a layout instead:

Remember, templates are not just for getting messy.  You can be quite clean with them too!

And here's a fun tip: combine two raindrops to create a heart:

Heart
You can also make flowers with the raindrops!

Daisy1
Isolate a single long raindrop and pounce through the opening with white paint…

Daisy2
…to create a daisy.  You can experiment with different colors and the different sizes of raindrops.

And here's my finished piece:

And you can see more Rain Stencil daisies in this unfinished page in my art journal:

I used the rain stencil on a trio of tags:

3Tags-sm
(Video instructions for each tag can be found in my Stencil 101 class.)

And on this cute tag:

RainonyourParadeTag-sm
Some inking, some spraying, and a little watercolor umbrella.

Remember this art journal spread from my Art Journal Every Day post "A Seven Day Plan?"

7-sm
You can see the raindrops all down the left-side of the page.

Finally, I was so inspired by Sabrina Alery's use of the Rain Stencil during the Clearsnap/TCW Hop that I had to create a similarly layered background:

Watch the video to see the layout come together:

To win both the 6×6 and 12×12 versions of the Rain Stencil, answer the Question of the Day:

In general do you prefer a video tutorial or written step-by-step with photos?  Why?

Just a reminder: To be eligible to win, you must post your comment in the comment section of this blog post.  You cannot post on Facebook or by replying to the e-mail (if you subscribe) in your inbox.  The reason for this is that I pick a winner via "random number generator" so I need a single list of comments.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Video – I just prefer the experience of watching the video. Although I would not like it if your blog post was only the video. I need some sense of what I am going to see. I think the pictures and directions just get me excited to watch the video. Also visuals of the video are more efficient that reading directions.

  • I also like both–the photos slow me down and make me think and the video helps when my thinking is not so clear and I can just watch you in action and imitate 🙂

  • I like videos that show the whole creation of the page in fast forward. I am more inspired by that kind of video. It just gets my ready to play!
For step by step instructions for a technique, I like to see the photos and read through the instructions. It gives me time to decide whether to leave out a step or not, and I can reread it without having to rewind video feed. Slide shows with text work well for this, too.
Thanks for the opportunity! I live in Washington where it always rains.

  • I prefer a video tutorial since it’s clearer with instructions alongside. I can already see how it is being done. If step by step.. sometimes i cannot imagine how it is being done.
Great series for today and very lovely stencil and work!

  • Great post, Julie — I love the versatility of the rain stencil. I think I prefer videos because it is hard to miss a step when I can see exactly what you are doing. I agree with so many others that your videos are particularly fun, because you have great energy (and great music!)

  • I find both are always good in their different ways.
I love lots of pictures with tutorials in general since I’m a visual person. But its also fun to actually see how something is done as you are doing it instead of just pictures. Sometimes it makes things more understandable.
(aside random comment: I stumbled upon your site the other day and had it open in my browser. I had gone to the craft store and picked up one of your stencils(not realizing it) and figured I’d check online to find more than what my store had. Then I realized you were the one who designed the stencils. It was an ahhh moment for me.)

  • A video will show you precisely how you are doing it. People’s comprehension of the written word/pictures may not be the same as what the author intended. Having both is good.

  • You are so creative to use the stencils upon stencils and parts of stencils to create other images. Normally, I like to read the instructions, and print them out to do the project at another time. It’s hard to do the project near my computer’s space. But for the more complicated steps, I like to have the video as a back up to see how to do the steps I have difficulty with. Thank you!

  • As others have said, I like both. I like the step-by-step to be able to print it out for later, if I don’t have time to try it right then. But the videos are great for explaining the details, and I will remember them when I’m looking at the print-out and trying it. Your videos are great – love your energy and your music!

  • So glad you asked this question! I always get more from video content. But it is always nice to have some photos on the side. I do not work well with written words or diagrams that are drawn.
Wonder what that says about me?!
    LOVE your work.

  • Video tutorial, definitely! I like it because it’s hard to skip passages, so, if you want you can do the same thing, in the same time. ( I made once with one of your on-line courses, and I was so thrilled!)

  • First, I have to say how much I loved your ideas with the tear drop stencil – especially the paper piecing–wow! I like both, but I find that if I’m kind of wanting to really copy a technique and need “time” to get it down, the step-by-step directions help because I can print and leave refer to them. I watched someone else’s video “tute” once and I kept having to stop and rewind. It was kind of annoying to keep leaving my craft desk to step over to PC to hit play again. However, I have also find that your video instructions are so well done – that I usually get it right from the first viewing — so that helps too!

  • I find both are useful in the right place. The photos are easier to load on the computer, and allow me to quickly go through it and get busy creating. The photos are also easier to reference later. Videos are heaven sent when there is something that requires more than a few sentences to describe, it is a technique that is too complex to write the directions for unless you are an engineer, but the best part of the video is you get to hear the artists & see the artists in process just like if you were in a class with them.

  • —this might be an accidental repeat post, I posted but I don’t see my comment, I gave it a few minutes and then reposted; if so, I’m sorry!—
I love this stencil! I’m obsessed with flowers, and I love the rain 🙂
I prefer a step-by-step photo tutorial usually because my son is young and I can’t always give a video my full attention for 10 minutes. But since I’m completely new to art in general, I often learn more from a video.
For example, in a video, you might be talking about all the ways to use this stencil, and mention working with gel medium or gesso–2 things I have no idea how to properly use to their full potential. Or you may mention when to use watercolors vs. when to use acrylics. So you’re not just teaching me this stencil and all the ways it can be used, you’re also giving me an art lesson.
So, for art stuff, I prefer videos 🙂

  • I have read everyone’s comments and agree that both video and narrative instructions are great and helpful. However, if you were going to make me pick one, I would pick video. One of the reasons I really like you is your personality and your quality of “being a good explainer”, which is a core value in our family.

  • Both are great for very different needs and uses. I usually like the step by step (if it is written out very clearly) because I can go at my own pace and stop and start at any stage but the video is great when I get stuck on the step by step visual. Thanks.

  • I find both (as in, having two at the same time) extremely helpful, because I learn different things from each format. But if I had to choose one over the other, I’d definitely choose video. I’m not a huge fan of text tutorials, though having lots of photos helps.

  • I like both video and written, but lean toward written just because it feels more efficient to me. I love the fast-forward videos for the time efficiency, but I find myself avoiding longer videos and forcing myself to watch them, then getting distracted midway and missing something–which doesn’t happen to me when I’m reading a written tutorial.

Written or video…hmmm…your videos because you make it so easy! Sometimes there are steps that are just so hard to put into words that action comes across better.
Have a great Monday and thanks again for making mine just a little brighter!! xo

  • I think I’m in the minority, but I prefer the step out written tutorials because I can stop and “study” if I need to. Besides, at the moment, it takes me 5 minutes to watch a 2 minute video due to buffering. Ugh…

  • I love videos as they are my entertainment. However, a still picture is still the thing that catches my eye.

  • hi both are good, sometimes even with tutorial it can be confusing, but with pictures and a clear explanation its good. and then seeing the process, if not shot too fast, can make things easier.
all useful really, probably prefer the pictures as long as i understand what youre on about!
    thanks Julie

  • I like both. Sometimes, reading through the instructions, especially with pictures for each step let’s me think about how I’d want to use the technique for a project of my own. Seeing the video often helps clarify techniques that I might not be familiar with when I read the instructions.
Ive noticed that people are using high speed videos a lot lately to speed through the repetitive, time-consuming parts of projects. While very cool to watch, sometimes, I miss too much of the nuance of a technique that way and it’s nice to have written step by step instructions to go back to.

This past year I’ve found so many interesting how-to videos! For example, when the Kindle2 arrived I was amazed by books I could suddenly read, and the scope of topics that I now use to support my artistic practices is growing (science, geography, sculpture). Video adds dimension to my experiences where print or e-ink falls short, and you can be in my home anytime! Thanks Julie!

  • Hi Julie,
I love love this stencils and the fact you used it to make other things with it. So cool when you can find more then one use for tools I think. They all came out beautiful and fun.
For me the videos are the best because I am a visual learner and like to hear your thoughts as your working. Your videos are very good, your voice and the time you take to share with us all make it easy and more approachable for me.
I love your writing and photos just as much though and look forward to reading them and rereading them many times for inspiration.
Thanks for sharing and for this cool giveaway !!!
We just had a verrry rainy weekend and this stencil would be perfect for my photos I took.

  • While I am a visual learner and my initial response to this question was video, I realize that because I live a super busy, crazy life, I often won’t take time to watch the video but can quickly read through the step-by-steps. I am also hearing impaired so I often get frustrated with videos because I can’t understand what is being said if I can’t read lips. So… the reality? I like both. I like being able to see something done. But the reality of my life is I need the fastest way possible for the info and it’s faster to read than watch. Love these stencils, by the way! Love your blog and have recommended it to many people!

  • I like both-depends on what the lesson it. With some of the more challenging techniques, a video is awesome. But for simpler stuff, the pictures are better-shows more results, easy to peruse. The only challenge to pictures is it makes scrolling down the blog to make a comment challenging, at least in my iPad. It has to refresh a bit on the trek down, and if I’ve seen the pictures already, it takes a bit of time.
I love these stencil palooza events!

  • I prefer the video tutorials. If you show me how to do something, it is easier for me to understand. Plus, it’s fun to watch the process of a layout, etc. being put together!

  • Hi Julie!
I use both methods but there’s just something more exciting about watching the artist work their magic in front of your eyes. It’s so much easier to follow and understand. Not quite as good as an in person class but the second best thing!

  • I am such a visual person so therefore I love tutorial video’s, however, I do love to see you document each stage as well, honestly I think I have to have both (call me greedy) lol. p.s. I just love your website and getting your emails every day 🙂

  • Hi! While step-by-step directions are nice, I just love videos so much more. That way nothing is missed or misunderstood. Besides, your enthusiasm on video is so contagious and I’m afraid it wouldn’t show through still photos.

  • love this stencil. it’s so versatile. I love video tutorials because I like to see the project as it comes together. I sometimes feel like I missing something with photo tutorials.

  • Video. I’m a visual learner and I can’t always picture in my mind how something is supposed to work when it’s just in words.

  • I prefer the written tutorial as you can go back and check each step. With the videos you would have to keep moving it around and it is hard to get it to the spot you want.

  • Julie, this is a crazy difficult question. Like so many others, I use both. As a highly visual person each fits my learning style but I will only watch video tut’s when I’m home alone and there are no other distractions. I will read tut’s when there is lots of other noises going on in the house. If I had to pick just one I would have to say VIDEO. Especially if it’s yours. You have such a lovely voice that’s a pleasure to listen to.

  • Another great post Julie!
In answer to the question, when YOU present tutorials, you are so thorough that both work equally well for me. That said, it’s always fun to watch your videos, so based on that, I’d say video is my preference!

  • I prefer step by step with pictures because I can read and learn silently. With video I’m either distracting my kids from their homeschooling (they’re big fans and can’t resist wandering in to watch with me) or bugging my husband who’s trying to watch something of his own. And I dislike headphones as they hurt my ears but resort to them if I video is my only option.

  • I like the written if it is a construction type project like a book of box. I can print and keep for future reference. But having a video makes it easier to learn a technique like making flowers.
    Thanks,

  • In general I prefer written instructions but lately I’ve noticed that I really enjoy your video tutorials. I like your relaxed style. And that you fast forward the less relevant parts. And your music choices in the beginning of the videos are great! Small stuff like that makes me happy! 😉

  • Actually, I prefer both. I like to watch the video first, then sit down with the written step by step instructions as I do it so I don’t have to keep hitting a pause button…it’s paused right in front of me! Thank you!

  • Your videos really get my blood circulating, my fingers twitching. I like the somewhat longer ones in which you have time to explain your processes and tell what products you are using, for some things I can’t quite identify. The step-by-step photos series with written explanations is a wonderful teaching tool; I think there is a kinetic energy to your videos that appeals to me more strongly, plus seeing (my style of learning) just how your hands move for a technique helps me know what to do. Your blog has become a first-thing go-to for me. Thank you so much.

  • Good Morning Julie.
I like both methods. However, this question really made me think about my learning style.
Pictures and step by step directions came out only lightly ahead of videos. Perhaps because I can “chunk” my learning.
    Thank you for this opportunity.

  • I gotta admit, I love video tutorials. I like seeing things come together- I often get more from the little in between “flourishes” (the way a drip of paint is created, etc) than the actual steps! But I always need a photo of the finished project somewhere on the blog, so I know what I am watching! 😉

  • Each serves a purpose. When learning a new technique, video is helpful since there is so much more the instructor can offer verbally. reading lengthy instructions is not as much fun as watching someone do something new. I enjoy both forms of your tutorials since you usually offer great photos. Thanks

This is definitely one stencil that I must have.

  • Hey Julie, I love them both! I open your emails each morning and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us each day!!!! I can’t pick just one, I love to see your pics and instructions, and if I get to the end and there is a video, well that is just an added bonus! I have viewed your your-tube videos so many times and love the music that you choose with each one! I love to hear you talk about what you are doing and your ta-da for the big reveal! Regardless you rock!!!!!!

  • I prefer videos. I generally feel more empowered to try something when I see it on a video than with pictures and instructions. I was making a dress this weekend, and could not make heads or tails (or a collar, it seems!) from the pattern instructions and pix. Granted, it forced me to get creative and improvise, but with lots of frustration and less than beautiful results. Love the rain stencils, and love the versatility you’ve come up with in using them!

  • I love love love this stencil, talk about versatility!! Your layout is gorgeous, love all the elements you did to build the page. I really like both written and video tutorials. I like written because it’s more detailed but have to admit that if i had to choose I’d pick video tutorials. There’s something about watching the process that I absolutely love and sometimes I tend to lose interest if a written tutorial is too long.

  • I prefer the written step by step with photos mainly because it takes too long for a video to load in our marginal internet area and because it is easier to look at one aspect that you want to see again.
    Thanks for asking!

  • I would have to say I like the written tuts because I can print them out, or bookmark them to go back to when stuck or I forget a certain technique. I love watching the video tuts but unfortunately I tend to forget things and it is very hard to go back. You eventually end up watching the entire tut again (which never hurts)!

  • Both video and step by step tutorials are great especially when it comes from you who is terrific in explaining things. I took part in the free stencil 101 online class and Julie you were amazing. Not only you explained everything in detail but also you made things look very easy. Your videos are fun filled and creatively inspiring.

  • So many great ideas for raindrops!
Generally, I prefer written step-by-step tutorials with pictures. Maybe because I can study each step for as long as I’d like…..they move slower (does that make sense?). I often refer back to your Seven Day Plan tutorial. It was really helpful.
That being said, all your tutorials, of any kind, make me happy!

  • Gorgeous artwork! I think both ways are helpful in their own way….fotos with written is very helpful as I take them into my studio and can actually work through it at my own pace. Videos are fun to watch but love that you speed them up as real time is way too time consuming. In any event….some form of visual, be it still fotos or a video but written always jog my memory at a later date and I can use them in my studio ….thanks for asking our input.

  • I definately prefer step-by-step photo guides and I know that it’s all about me. I’m a fast reader and a pretty impatient girl so I like being able to scroll in my own pace better than having to follow someone elses tempo. I do sometimes enjoy watching videos to hear people speak English though… 😉
Oh and I LOVE your stencils. I know that’s not part of the question, I just wanted to say it.

  • I am a video person. I need to see what the process is. Then I can take my own notes (and then sometimes I still need to go back to see the process).
I wondered about the raindrops on that Art journal page. They all looked so uniform. When I reinterpreted the page myself I did them by hand.

  • Hi Julie!
I, too, like both video & written instructions. I probably like video more because I’m more of a visual type of gal, but I like the step-by-step instructions to refer back too.
    Thanks!

  • Gee, that’s a hard one. I love seeing things create via the video process but it is great to see the step by step also. If I had to pick one I guess it would be the video because a lot of time the artist will not only show the step but explain why they chose to do it that way or give you a little extra tip than what they might include in the written step by step. Thanks for the opportunity to win this great stencil. I love all the different ways you used it!

  • If I have to pick, I’d say video, because I love to see how the piece really comes together. But if I can be greedy, I love both, the video, and step by step for follow-up.

  • Great projects using the raindrop stencil. I especially like the umbrella tag and Let Go pages. I like pic tutorials but I LOVE videos. I’m a “visual” or “hands on” learner. Seeing it done, I catch on much quicker than trying to figure it out via pics and written instructions. 🙂

  • I like a vid when you need to see the actual motion of a pencil stroke or how to maneuver a brush to get a certain effect.
For more static techniques, words and pictures work fine and are something I can print out and take to the kitchen table or the coffee shop.
So… I guess I like them both for different reasons.

  • I think in our global world the video often makes more sense to me, particularly with different phrasing and measurements….but I think it is easier to go back and check a photo instructional tutorial.

  • I prefer the video demos for some projects that are difficult but for easier ones, the pictures do just fine. I really like that rain drop stencil. I have just started doing art journals and mixed media and I’m slowly building up my supply. I have just posted my lastest art journal page on my blog. I would appreicate your comments and suggestions.

  • I like both and use both, but I do favor videos. I am new to crafting and maybe it is my age (57:), I find I can play certain parts over (and over) while I am working on the same project and it helps.
Just as I like taking craft classes, videos just give that extra instruction.

I think I prefer a video tutorial – probably because I read all day for work, so like the easier to absorb format of videos. Would love to win one of your wonderful stencils!

  • Great stencil!
i like both as well. i am a visual person so it helps to see the process. but without a written step by step even a video can be hard to follow if done too quickly.

  • I prefer the video with a photo of the finished piece(s). For example, I recently took your stenciling class and loved seeing a finished photo and having my curiosity piqued as to how you were going to make it, and then to actually watch and hear every step you took. Watching you do make it & explaining what you were doing as you were doing it gave me the confidence to believe that maybe I can too, which is HUGE for me. Thank you for having the heart of a teacher and for wanting to pass along what you know. And thank you for showing the different things that can be made with this stencil – I’m going to have to add it to my list since I’ll be starting on my Valentine’s cards soon!

  • I think you are wonderful to watch! Your energy and enthusiasm shine through and give encouragement to those who don’t necessarily think of themselves as artistic and those who are afraid to just play with new materials. I have Collage; Fast and Furious which I really love. Thank you!
btw: I love your tags, the raindrop stencil rocks (but then, so do you!)

  • I prefer a video tutorial backed up with printed materials/photos. But if I were limited to one choice, I’d prefer video tutorials. Watching someone do what I need to learn is very valuable; if I had to, I could always write my own notes. Without being able to watch, to see a demo, sometimes it is hard for me to learn just from a printed source….and I’m speaking as someone who really loves books. To learn new techniques, I’ve really got to see how the teacher does them.

  • I like the video best, because it is a treat for me to sit with my coffee in the morning after the kids have left for school and watch someone make art that I can then think about making all the rest of the day.
So happy to sit and watch…
PS Thanks for all the new videos you’ve been putting out there lately.

  • It depends on what it is, so my answer is really both. If it is a technique that requires seeing “action” to really understand, a video is good. I think I like the video in part because I can see it happen, the exact process, and hear the reason why things are done a certain way. Step by step are helpful if it is a specific set of steps you are trying to follow. I am not sure what I wrote really makes sense, I just know that I really like videos, but If I am trying to do a project, I like step by step with pictures to use after watching the video.

  • Any tutorial is a good tutorial from my point of view. There are positive points about both….the photo tut is great for slowing down the pace and progressing at your own speed. The video tut is more “personal” and it’s fun to witness your artistic process. So keep ’em both coming! Thanks Julie!

  • I like the videos too. Your humor always comes through in them. I can always rewind if I miss something. Thanks for all you do.

  • I generally prefer a video. While I like the step-out photos of a written tutorial (and ideally, I love to see several step-out photos WITH a video tutorial), I am often on the go with my 4 kids, and it is much easier for me to watch a video on my phone than it is for me to scroll through a long blog post on my phone. Also, many times artists tend to assume certain steps are a “given” when doing written tutorials (sometimes not even on purpose – they’ve just been doing it for so long)…and leave them out or don’t give truly complete instructions – and for a beginner, those assumptions can be what prevents them from being able to replicate the process…whereas actually seeing the process being done on video makes it easier to actually pause, rewind if necessary, etc., in order to learn the process.

  • I really like to touch the paper and see the directions..I think that’s part of the reason that I love to scrapbook…I just want to touch the paper and the “goodies”. Thank you so much for the opportunity to win…I love the examples you’ve shared today and I would love to try them!

  • I love this stencil. In general I prefer video tutorials because I love watching how someone else works and I think it’s easier to communicate more information that way, but I love to have a few still shots of the finished project to admire and drool over after e video is done. 😉

  • I know you asked us to choose but I really like them both. And you also have 2 kinds of videos… your talking ones, and your superfast ones… both of which I love!
PS – I already have both of these so keep me out of the hat for this one!

  • I normally prefer a picture step by step as a reference. However, sometimes, it’s very helpful to actually see the process in a video. So I really like both.

  • If I have to choose only one, it would be video, as that is easiest for me to recall. However, it’s nice to have a written version when sharing with others. Love this stencil, hope it rains on me!

  • I’m a video person but… it has to work on my mac and at a speed that I can handle. Nothing worse that a jerky vid that drops out! I prefer books for written, step-by-step instruction.
