Welcome to Stencil-a-Palooza! Several days a week for the next month or so I'll be featuring one of my eighteen stencil designs for The Crafter's Workshop! Each post comes with a giveaway. Today I'm going to share a little bit about TCW229 Rain:
You get three sizes of drops in a single stencil! Kind of cool, if I do say so myself.
For my first project I traced and cut two sizes of the raindrops…
…and then paper pieced this kind of cool pattern:
I had planned to make it into a card, but it was just so pretty I decided to incorporate it into a layout instead:
Remember, templates are not just for getting messy. You can be quite clean with them too!
And here's a fun tip: combine two raindrops to create a heart:
You can also make flowers with the raindrops!
Isolate a single long raindrop and pounce through the opening with white paint…
…to create a daisy. You can experiment with different colors and the different sizes of raindrops.

I used the rain stencil on a trio of tags:

Finally, I was so inspired by Sabrina Alery's use of the Rain Stencil during the Clearsnap/TCW Hop that I had to create a similarly layered background:

Video – I just prefer the experience of watching the video. Although I would not like it if your blog post was only the video. I need some sense of what I am going to see. I think the pictures and directions just get me excited to watch the video. Also visuals of the video are more efficient that reading directions.

I also like both–the photos slow me down and make me think and the video helps when my thinking is not so clear and I can just watch you in action and imitate 🙂

I love love love the video – I get so excited when I see you have posted one. I prefer it because it makes the steps much clearer for me. Also I have gone back to videos from classes I took from you in 2009 to remind myself how to do things. I also enjoy the music you pick.

Great post, Julie — I love the versatility of the rain stencil. I think I prefer videos because it is hard to miss a step when I can see exactly what you are doing. I agree with so many others that your videos are particularly fun, because you have great energy (and great music!)

You are so creative to use the stencils upon stencils and parts of stencils to create other images. Normally, I like to read the instructions, and print them out to do the project at another time. It’s hard to do the project near my computer’s space. But for the more complicated steps, I like to have the video as a back up to see how to do the steps I have difficulty with. Thank you!

As others have said, I like both. I like the step-by-step to be able to print it out for later, if I don’t have time to try it right then. But the videos are great for explaining the details, and I will remember them when I’m looking at the print-out and trying it. Your videos are great – love your energy and your music!

I love the videos best, especially the fast way that you do them. I’m not a fan of real time videos, I usually do a lot of skipping.

I like both. It is great to see how the artist works but it is also nice to read the instructions with pictures. If I print and read I don’t end up with a paint plastered laptop!

Video tutorial, definitely! I like it because it’s hard to skip passages, so, if you want you can do the same thing, in the same time. ( I made once with one of your on-line courses, and I was so thrilled!)

First, I have to say how much I loved your ideas with the tear drop stencil – especially the paper piecing–wow! I like both, but I find that if I’m kind of wanting to really copy a technique and need “time” to get it down, the step-by-step directions help because I can print and leave refer to them. I watched someone else’s video “tute” once and I kept having to stop and rewind. It was kind of annoying to keep leaving my craft desk to step over to PC to hit play again. However, I have also find that your video instructions are so well done – that I usually get it right from the first viewing — so that helps too!

Videos are heaven sent when there is something that requires more than a few sentences to describe, it is a technique that is too complex to write the directions for unless you are an engineer, but the best part of the video is you get to hear the artists & see the artists in process just like if you were in a class with them.
I find both are useful in the right place. The photos are easier to load on the computer, and allow me to quickly go through it and get busy creating. The photos are also easier to reference later. I love the fast-forward videos for the time efficiency, but I find myself avoiding longer videos and forcing myself to watch them, then getting distracted midway and missing something–which doesn’t happen to me when I’m reading a written tutorial.

I think I’m in the minority, but I prefer the step out written tutorials because I can stop and “study” if I need to. Besides, at the moment, it takes me 5 minutes to watch a 2 minute video due to buffering. Ugh…

We just had a verrry rainy weekend and this stencil would be perfect for my photos I took.
While I am a visual learner and my initial response to this question was video, I realize that because I live a super busy, crazy life, I often won’t take time to watch the video but can quickly read through the step-by-steps. I am also hearing impaired so I often get frustrated with videos because I can’t understand what is being said if I can’t read lips. So… the reality? I like both. I like being able to see something done. But the reality of my life is I need the fastest way possible for the info and it’s faster to read than watch. Love these stencils, by the way! Love your blog and have recommended it to many people!

I prefer the video tutorials. If you show me how to do something, it is easier for me to understand. Plus, it’s fun to watch the process of a layout, etc. being put together!

I prefer the written tutorial as you can go back and check each step. With the videos you would have to keep moving it around and it is hard to get it to the spot you want.

I prefer step by step with pictures because I can read and learn silently. With video I’m either distracting my kids from their homeschooling (they’re big fans and can’t resist wandering in to watch with me) or bugging my husband who’s trying to watch something of his own. And I dislike headphones as they hurt my ears but resort to them if I video is my only option.

I gotta admit, I love video tutorials. I like seeing things come together- I often get more from the little in between “flourishes” (the way a drip of paint is created, etc) than the actual steps! But I always need a photo of the finished project somewhere on the blog, so I know what I am watching! 😉

I would have to say I like the written tuts because I can print them out, or bookmark them to go back to when stuck or I forget a certain technique. I love watching the video tuts but unfortunately I tend to forget things and it is very hard to go back. You eventually end up watching the entire tut again (which never hurts)!

Both video and step by step tutorials are great especially when it comes from you who is terrific in explaining things. I took part in the free stencil 101 online class and Julie you were amazing. Not only you explained everything in detail but also you made things look very easy. Your videos are fun filled and creatively inspiring.

If I had to pick one I guess it would be the video because a lot of time the artist will not only show the step but explain why they chose to do it that way or give you a little extra tip than what they might include in the written step by step. Great projects using the raindrop stencil. I especially like the umbrella tag and Let Go pages. I like pic tutorials but I LOVE videos. I’m a “visual” or “hands on” learner. Seeing it done, I catch on much quicker than trying to figure it out via pics and written instructions. 🙂

For more static techniques, words and pictures work fine and are something I can print out and take to the kitchen table or the coffee shop.

I like both and use both, but I do favor videos. I am new to crafting and maybe it is my age (57:), I find I can play certain parts over (and over) while I am working on the same project and it helps.
Just as I like taking craft classes, videos just give that extra instruction.

I honestly like them both. I find it more inspiring to watch you build a page, however I think I learn better when reading instructions. I love the paperpiecing it looks like a mini quilt!

Any tutorial is a good tutorial from my point of view. There are positive points about both….the photo tut is great for slowing down the pace and progressing at your own speed. The video tut is more “personal” and it’s fun to witness your artistic process. So keep ’em both coming! Thanks Julie!

While I like the step-out photos of a written tutorial (and ideally, I love to see several step-out photos WITH a video tutorial), I am often on the go with my 4 kids, and it is much easier for me to watch a video on my phone than it is for me to scroll through a long blog post on my phone. Also, many times artists tend to assume certain steps are a “given” when doing written tutorials (sometimes not even on purpose – they’ve just been doing it for so long)…and leave them out or don’t give truly complete instructions – and for a beginner, those assumptions can be what prevents them from being able to replicate the process…whereas actually seeing the process being done on video makes it easier to actually pause, rewind if necessary, etc., in order to learn the process.
I really like to touch the paper and see the directions..I think that’s part of the reason that I love to scrapbook…I just want to touch the paper and the “goodies”. Thank you so much for the opportunity to win…I love the examples you’ve shared today and I would love to try them!

I love this stencil. In general I prefer video tutorials because I love watching how someone else works and I think it’s easier to communicate more information that way, but I love to have a few still shots of the finished project to admire and drool over after e video is done. 😉

I think I prefer the pictures and written instructions so I can read over the instructions and go slowly. Love all the stencils!!

I normally prefer a picture step by step as a reference. However, sometimes, it’s very helpful to actually see the process in a video. So I really like both.

I’m a video person but… it has to work on my mac and at a speed that I can handle. Nothing worse that a jerky vid that drops out! I prefer books for written, step-by-step instruction.
