Art Journal Every Day: Travel Sketch Journal

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150 If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here.  Please read this post first.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  Just play! You can join the linky list for August here.

While here in Maine I've been keeping a sort of visual travel art journal.  That's a rather complicated way of saying I've been mixing little sketches with some rambling commentary.

Here's what I packed:

Kit
Kit
Contents:

  1. Aqua Tote (which I'm sorry to say has sprung a leak and is not worth the money)
  2. Koi Watercolor Set with Waterbrush by Sakura
  3. Watercolor Crayons
  4. Tiny Watercolor Moleskine
  5. Pitt Pens
  6. Extra Paintbrushes
  7. White Sharpie
  8. Mechanical Pencil
  9. White Eraser
  10. Alphabet Stamps
  11. Black Stamp Pad

I haven't used everything I brought me and that's fine. But it's there if I want it.

And here's what I did:

I particularly like this style of art journaling because it allows me to work in stages.  I've been using a pencil to sketch in the drawing in the moment.  Later I go back with a pen and clean up the lines and erase all the pencil away.  Then later I can paint.  And then even later I can go back in and journal.  As I said, I'm finding that working in stages is very appealing to me these days.

And another benefit: I have never thought of myself as a person who can draw.  And yet, I see that these little chicken scratchy drawings still communicate the idea of what I was looking at.  And isn't that the point of a drawing? To capture a little bit of what you're seeing?  So I'm pleased with how these pages have turned out.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I always travel with my journal and a few supplies, but I also travel with my 2 very young grandsons. So I don’t get much done, but the 2 year old has made some lovely pages! It also keeps him quiet on planes and in restaurants.
May I say that you should start thinking of yourself as a drawer immediately! I particularly love the sleeves in the kitchen scene. Don’t get too much better and lose that nice loose style you have.

  • Every sketch is a story with a beginning, a middle and an end. And all of them together are like an independent foreign film, sans CGI, so that’s why I like them. I’m struggling with adding words myself…since our last journaling club meeting, I don’t know what to write down. How did you find the flow to write so easily?

  • Thanks for sharing your travel kit with everyone. I love to see where people work, but especially what and how folks pack to travel and journal. And love seeing your journal – great drawings!
For your leaky tote – try the stuff they sell at camping stores to stop tents from leaking. It’s a spray and you can spray seams and the material to make it waterproof again. It’s a handy size for all your stuff anyway.

  • Like the famous joke: Q: Excuse me, how do you get to Carnegie Hall?  A: Practice, practice, practice!
Its easy for me now because I just let go and let the messy handwriting and unguarded thoughts flow.  I dont pay attention to grammar or perfection or anything like that.  I just write.
