My Week in the Life Album is 8.5×11. I decided that I would lay out my album for each day as follows:
As you can see, each day starts with an 8.5×11 layout. I thought it would be fun to do the layout in real time rather than after the fact. And while my original plan was to scrapbook each night, my nights got busy and so I pretty much ended up creating the layout the next day instead. I think the results are pretty interesting because…
- I rarely scrap 8.5×11.
- I rarely scrap seven days in a row.
- I rarely scrap just for myself and not for an obligation or assignment.
But more on that at the end of this post. Let's get to the layouts!
Monday
For all these layouts I used whatever was on my desk. This is a mixture of the Jenni Bowlin July kit and a Studio Calico kit from a million years ago. Plus some paper I made in my Live with Prima class.
Tuesday
Hmmm…getting very clean and simple here. It's funny how it feels like me, but it doesn't. I love that number stamp across the bottom. And how serendipitous that it was the 26th of July and that MME tag had the number 26 on it!
Wednesday
I feel like 8.5×11 is somehow more delicate than 12×12. Perhaps it's the smaller size? I'm digging the strip circles — definitely going to do that one again!
Thursday
If I thought that Tuesday's layout was clean and simple, this one is just super clean and simple. but I added a few wonky circles traveling up the left side for a little bit of Julie flavor. Not sure how I feel about the rhinestones. I kind of want to pull them off.
Friday
More wonky circles. And a lot of hand cutting. I was admiring Anja's hand cut titles and decided that it was time to do some of my own. I used to do them a lot, but then it became easier and quicker to just paint them. But there's something to be said for the look of hand cutting, don't you think?
Saturday
It's funny, but something about these smaller layouts makes me feel more comfortable using a very busy patterned paper as the background. That said, this layout is kind of crazy. It pulses with pattern.
Sunday
I used one of my all time favorite Crafter's Workshop stencils (starburst) with some Copic airbrushing. And the yellow "patterned paper" is actually packaging from some a Studio Calico product! And it seems fitting — I started the week with paint splats and ended it that way too!
Some observations about this week of scrapbooking every single day:
- It has been a long time since I've scrapbooked every day. I am creative every day — art journaling, painting, design, etc. but I haven't scrapbooked like this for a long time. It was fantastic.
- I forgot how much fun kits are! My scrapbooking bread&butter has been Prima for so long and guesting for the Jenni Bowlink kit club really got me remembering how fun it is to mix up different manufacturers. This week I used a mixture of the Jenni kit, a Studio Calico kit, and a Cocoa Daisy kit. Which is fantastic, because I haven't used a kit (and they come every darn month) in quite a while. I feel re-energized about scrapbooking.
- 8.5×11 is easier and quicker to fill. It sounds so obvious, but it's absolutely true. And I adore having so much leftover stuff! Border stickers get cut down, so you have extra bits and pieces. Paper gets cut down, so you can use the "B" side for something else!
- It was lovely to make layouts without having to think about how to showcase product. I just thought about how to tell the story. And techniques that would be fun for me to do!
- I am also reminded that in my pre-design team days I rarely used embellishments. Just a few here and there, but mostly I'm attracted to patterned paper and hand cut elements.
I'll share the rest of my Week in the Life album when I finish it — probably next week. I can tell you already that I decided not to do the baseball card holders. I'm doing photo collages instead. Faster and easier, I think.
Thanks for stopping by!

Love the layouts! I know what you mean about just doing something for yourself for fun. Looking forward to the rest of the album – I’m loving the size. 12×12 is too intimidating for this started-out-as-a-card-maker gal.

Such fun layouts!! I love the way you work with patterned papers. That is so difficult for me to do. I love how you write about NYC transportation. I go to NYC about once a year and my favorite things to photograph are store windows and numbers. Numbers are everywhere in every font and 3D shape imaginable. I also love your hand cut titles. Gotta try that. Thanks for the inspiration. You have me so psyched up for my trip this month!

Great post! I’m chiming in because I truly have a system down with the Post Office. ha! No, really. First, I make sure that i have a small stash of supplies at home. They will deliver them to you, free. Priority Mail supplies all come to your door for free. Second, I print postage exclusively online. The only postage you can’t print online, easily, is first class international. Not a huge problem for me. Invest in a postal scale (found super cheap on eBay) and you’ll never fret again.
Here’s another easy tip: if you’re shipping priority mail, the USPS will pick up from your home, for free. As long as you have one priority package, you can also include non-priority in the pick up. I know you live in NYC, but I presume you have a mail lobby in your building. When you “request a carrier pick-up” you specify where you will have the package. If you have a doorman, even better! Just say “with the doorman”.
Or, you can take the packages to the post office and just hand them to a postal worker. I am NOT good at this, I don’t have it in me to cut the line like that, but my husband does it easily. I’ve had postal workers TELL me to do that, it just doesn’t come naturally to me. You can also take the prepared packages to anyplace that takes US Mail, like the UPS store, and they’ll take them.
Okay, my USPS tutorial is over.
I lied. One more thing… you can also print postage via PayPal, which is AWESOME. https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_ship-now

you certainly have taken scrapbooking to a different level. i think it is interesting to see how you can take a moment in time and create a page around it.

Love all your pages. I think it’s funny, as I just get my feet wet in sketching again, and then am just trying mixed media art for the first time.. I keep throwing scrapbooking elements into everything, wondering if I’m right or wrong to DO it; but here YOU are, GLAD to be mixing it all up and combining everything. I mean, that’s the whole idea, isn’t it? To mix as many things together, in layers, as you can??? Well, if it’s MY art, I guess I can do whatever I want, right? Far be it for me to travel on the road that everyone else is!! Ha! Ha! I did just recently order my first Crafter’s Workshop templates, and can’t WAIT for them to get here!! I actually want MORE already!.. Great post! TFS! I think your Wednesday and Thursday pages were my favorites, and I can’t wait to see the rest when you’re done!

It does my heart good when I hear that you “scrapped for yourself” Julie. You inspire so many other people and work hard at this crafty career that I am glad to hear that FUN can still be had (without guidelines and such).
I do 8.5X11 LO’s every once and a while and I do like how different they feel from my usual 12X12 ones.

Ah yes- I can always count on this blog to inspire and teach- these pages are AMAZING! I tried very hard to “scrap” on vacation but nothing came together- mostly because I was sharing the hotel apartment with other family members who refused to leave me the time I needed to think about what I wanted to say and do. I have try to hand cut titles- those look fantastic! I’m also going to look out for your CW templates- are they available for sale online?
I share your post office dread! My regular mailman is a great guy but when he goes on vacation the replacements are all jerks- they leave packages in the hallway to get stolen. I lost 100 dollars worth of quilting fabric last year that way and since it was sent “delivery confirmation” and marked “delivered” I couldn’t recoup the costs. These days I have everything sent signature required. Great informative and inspiring post!

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing your simple pages. I think doing a “simple” page is so much more difficult than doing a page with more stuff on it. You have to pay attention to the elements of design. You know the ones I’m talking about – those elements I saw you talking about on TV.

Loved this post.
I think this format would be easier for me because I have an easier time developing a focal point on a rectangle than a square.
Thanks for sharing so much of yourself.

I love your pages so far, how awesome that you did it while the thoughts were still fresh for that day. My idea was to do a artsy WITL this year also. Just seeing your pages is already inspiring me and love love what your doing. Can’t wait to see the rest of it come together.
