Art Journal Every Day

Art Journal Every Day: The Everything Book

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150 Today I'm going to talk about a different kind of art journaling.  One that doesn't necessarily have all the paint and ink.  The focus is more on the journaling with a smattering of the art.

For me, this kind of journaling was the bridge to the kind of art journaling that I do today.  In many ways it was a bridge into scrapbooking for me as well.  Most importantly, it was the bridge into the daily art journaling habit for me.

And given the wild acclaim at the Craft and Hobby Association Show for the Smash Books from EK Success, I think this is something that may appeal to many of you!

I have intermittently kept a daily diary since I was a freshman in college.  Those diaries have morphed into a series of notebooks I call "Everything Books."

My Everything Book is a book that I carry with me every single day.  When I'm home it sits on my desk.  When I'm out, it's in my bag.

Composition books, moleskines, fancy stationery shop notebooks…

Covers
…they've come in a variety of shapes and sizes over the years.  Lately I've been favoring splitting "everything duty" between a small notebook for my purse and my larger daily art journal, which stays at home.

What's in an "Everything Book?"  Well…everything.

E-mails…

Doing anything daily is a difficult task.  Think about how many times your Mom had to say, "Did you brush your teeth?" Having an Everything Book is a great way to get into the habit of putting  the flotsam and jetsam of your life into a notebook.

Most pages look like this:

Dog&catbike
An e-mail, a card from someone, and a diary entry.  Just a big mashup of memory and feelings without a lot of thought about how it looks.

This is the current Everything Book that I carry in my purse:

Molkeskine
It's a small moleskine that I've stuck a pencil in.  Having the pencil in there means it's super easy to doodle, write, draw, or muse at a moment's notice.  The elastic band around the book holds the pencil in the book really well.

Moleskine-pencil
Open your mind to a bigger definition of an art journal.  Take the pressure off yourself to achieve perfection.  Take the pressure off yourself to make every page a page you love.

I read so many comments and e-mails from people claiming that they are not artistic enough to do an art journal.  Or that they did a page and then hated it.  Stop it, people!  Collect your memories, collect your thoughts, create your art, and do it any way that feels good and makes sense for you!  People art journal for so many different reasons.  If you just want to paint and color and not put down a single word, that's awesome!  If you want to write today and color tomorrow, that's awesome!  If you just want to write and write…guess what…that's awesome!  It's just a notebook.

I'll say that again: It's just a notebook.  Turn the page and move on.  Whether it's brilliant or babble it's just a page.

So grab a notebook, a pen, a colorant of some kind and get cracking!

Hope you have a great week of art journaling, whatever way you do it!

  • I absolutely love the idea. Until now I have had a diary for work and a mess of a handbag collecting the bits needed for the other part of my life – ME! From now on my work diary is going to be more than that – it is going to be my Everything Book. Yes – it still has to be in diary form or I would NEVER know where I was supposed to be at any given time 🙂 But it will definitely contain a lot more than appointments. Watch this space…. And thanks so much Julie for your wonderful inspiration – I am so enjoying this journey with you and in the process finding out a lot about my (creative) self.

  • Wow, lovely of you to share peeks into your books. I agree that we have to open up the definition of art journaling. I think perhaps it’s intimidating for many when folks only show their best pages in posts and galleries. When in fact a journal – whether art or notes or sketchbook… it’s just a record of your life. Plain ‘ole definition of a scrap-book almost 🙂

  • Oh yes Julie… I can so relate to your ‘daily notebooks’… I kept a ‘diary’ from since I was 10 and wrote every day… imagine the pile of books I have! I just wrote, no images or ephemera, but art journaling is definitely related and I think the ‘habit’of writing every day helps with art journaling. Moliskine (with lines) are my fave for the writing ‘diaries’

  • Great post Julie! I was feeling a bit down because I haven’t completed any art journal pages, but I keep a daily notebook like this too so I am accomplishing something! I love composition books and keep one with me everywhere I go! I allow myself complete freedom in these notebooks and just start jotting down random thoughts, and making sketches on whatever page I turn to first. This works so much better for me than trying to keep a chronogical diary. Way too structured for my chaotic mind! I get so much inspiration from your blog so I just wanted to say thanks!

  • This is also historically known as a “commonplace book”. I love the idea of leaving behind a journal of just what every day life is like in 2011. I would like to believe that my descendants would be interested to know in 100 years.

  • I’ve been doing good about doing something in one of my books daily. only a few days I’ve missed.
I also use to journal daily, especially when my son was born. I mainly jotted down what he ate, sleep and any new things he did…like his first smile, laugh, slept through the night. Now I can look back and remember like it was that day! Thank you for all the inspiration and motivation!

I am a person who uses a notebook for to-do lists, shopping lists, creative ideas for scrapbooking, etc. I love the idea of using these as my art journals! It seems so much more doable than starting with a cold white page. I’ve been keeping a daily journal since I had surgery four days ago about my recovery, thoughts, etc. This would be a great starting place for more creative stuff. I want to include photos and stuff of the procedure I had, and creative stuff about my feelings about it all. You are a wonderful teacher! I love how you don’t let us talk ourselves out of it, and are always encouraging us to try another way. Thank you!

  • Awesome! I have to tell you yesterday I was at the end of our Disney Vacation in the airport coming back. As I pulled out a Compo book I bought along which has simple decorated covers I read this post on my phone. Love the idea. I had my kids drawing with crayons in there and I messed around with crayons and then just wrote over some of the pages.

  • Thanks for sharing your journals! Because I lack drawing and painting skills, I decided to try Becky Higgins “365 Project Life” album.
Oh, Julie, while I love the daily journaling, I am consumed and overwhelmed by the photography. Since I don’t have children or pets, I am finding the picture-taking extremely challenging and stressful.
There are times that I truly wish to give up, but the journaling keeps me going. I am finding that this project is a love/hate thing.
I am very inspired by your art journaling. Thanks for being a great teacher, and thanks for your joyful blog!

    Keep shining!
