This is the first time in a long time that I've played along with Prima's monthly Build-a-Page contest.  Here's the sketch:

And here's my interpretation:

HowHeTreatsHisMother-sm
I really just started with the idea that I wanted to see if I could use the "So Cute" line but in my style.  The "So Cute" line is double-sided paper that is blue/green/brown for boys on one side and pink/white/yellow for girls on the other.  It's filled with cute little creatures (frogs, teddy bears, etc.) and so not what I would usually grab to play with.

I collaged some papers, did some misting, some stamping, added some paint — there's even a journaling card buried in there somewhere!  I have to give credit to this girl whose class at PACS reminded me that stamping on top of collaged papers is an unbelievably smart way to meld them together!  Thank you, Stephanie!

You can see that even the flowers got a good dose of paint!  (And it's hard to tell from the photo, but these flowers are so dimensional that I couldn't get a good scan of my layout!  I had to photograph it, which I never do.)  In the upper left corner of the photo you can see the layers of stamps and spary ink and paint and all that good stuff!

I inlined the letter stickers with a white pen to help them connect to the white dots that take your eye around the layout.

You can see one of the too cute teddy bears here.  I think I did a good job of letting the original paper show through, while still making it fit my style.

If you want to play along and make a layout inspired by this month's sketch you could win a fabulous prize pack of Prima goodies.  The details are on the Prima blog.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I love your use of collaged papers and your stamping, which is always fabulous! The title placement and journaling is great, as well. I’m certainly learning a lot from your blog. Thank you! 🙂

  • Love this layout. I have a question. If you usually scan your pages, what have you found to be the best way to stitch the scans together…

  • I am stunned at how you transformed that paper to fit your style Julie. This is fantastic and I would never have noticed the bears unless you mentioned them.

  • I love, love your way of using paper that just is not you and making it it your style. I think this shows that we really can take any style of paper and make it work. Opens a whole new world of possibilities.
