I have compiled lots of art journaling links for you! I hope you enjoy them!
Some of my favorite art journalers:
- Mary Ann Moss of "Dispatch from LA"
- DJ Pettitt of "Gentle Whispering Hues"
- Samantha Kira of "Journal Girl"
- Ingrid Dijkers of "Ingrid Dijkers"
- Mary of "Joyful Ploys"
- Judy Wise of "Judy Wise"
- Orly Avineri of "One-Artist Journal"
- Ro Bruhn of "My Life in Colour"
- Teesha Moore of "Teesha Moore"
Inspiration can be found in many places, but check out these links:
- 30 Journals in 30 Days is part of "Dirty Footprints Studio." It's 30 interviews with 30 art journalers and it is lots of fun!
- Aisling's Artist Journals: This is a site rich with tutorials!
- Art Journaling Magazine from Stampington is always a good buy! I can usually find it at Borders or Barnes&Noble.
- True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling, Creative Wildfire, and Collaborative Art Journals are all books by L.K. Ludwig that I own and recommend. L.K.'s books are a sort of intellectual approach to why we art journal, with plenty of eye candy!
- Visual Chronicles and Journal Revolution are books by Linda Woods that I own and like a lot. They both take a simple, carefree attitude towards journaling with lots of great info about supplies and such for beginners! They're the books that first got me hooked on the idea of art journaling!
My favorite brand names:
- Gesso: Golden
- Brushes: Claudine Hellmuth Studio by Ranger
- Gel Medium: Golden Regular Gel Medium Matte, Ranger Multi Medium Matte
- Watercolor: Koi Tube Watercolors by Sakura
- Black Pen: Sakura Pigma Micron (.05 tip)
- White Pen: Uniball Signo
- Permanent Marker: Permapaque by Sakura
- Acrylic Paint: Golden Fluid Acrylics, Claudine Hellmuth Studio by Ranger
- Stamping Ink: Archival Ink by Ranger, StazOn by Tsukineko
- India Ink: Black Cat
- Spray Ink: Adirondack Color Wash by Ranger
I don't do a lot of online shopping when it comes to art supplies. I tend to shop locally. I like to browse the aisles of the art store and talk to the sales reps. So I haven't hyperlinked the supply list above because I don't really have strong recommendations on where to shop. If you know stores with great service and cheap shipping, please share!
If you're looking to get away for a few days, hang out with other art journal obsessed folks, learn from some talented experts, and immerse yourself in art journaling, a retreat may be just the thing for you. Here are some of the ones I know about:
- Squam Art Workshops
- CREATE with Cloth Paper Scissors (I'll be teaching at this retreat, which is next week!)
- Art & Soul
- Journal Fest
- Art Is
Not all of the retreats are "art journaling only." Some of them are mixed media retreats. But I have heard wonderful things about all of them!
Finally, you can learn more from me through:
Technique-a-Palooza: Paint & Ink: This is an online class I taught last year. All the class files (videos, posts and .pdfs) are archived on a private blog.
The class explores techniques using Spray Ink, Watercolor Paint, Acrylic Paint, Re-inkers, Distress Ink, and Watersoluble Crayons.
There are 30 techniques and I'm always available via e-mail if you have questions or concerns.
More information here.
Collage Fast & Furious DVD: This hour-long instructional DVD is available as an instant download or you can receive a physical DVD via mail.
Jenn Mason, Editor of Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine had this to say about the DVD:
"Whoa! Stop the presses…I have just been suitably blown away by Julie Fei-Fan Balzer’s new Cloth Paper Scissors Workshop DVD called 'Collage Fast & Furious.' I love Julie’s approach to art, and we’re even featuring one of her projects in our upcoming CPS Gifts magazine. (Oh, I can be such a tease.) Why do I love this DVD so much? First off, you feel immediately like Julie is speaking directly to you, and she’s funny, too. I love a teacher who can make me relax and have a great time while I’m learning something new."
I've had some e-mails asking if there's overlap between the two. And the answer is, "some." About eight of the techniques from Technique-a-Palooza appear on the DVD.
If you have resources of your own: fantastic websites, blogs that inspire, places to shop, feel free to leave them in the comments section!
Thanks for stopping by! There will be two more posts to end the week!

thanks for the inspiration this week and this list of references – it’s great. Have you ever mentioned how you select/pack your supplies when you go to an event like this by air? I’m going to Silver Bella as a complete newbie and am wondering about the best way to go and return. Any advice welcome 🙂
Thanks again for this week on art journaling!
