This week at Pencil Lines we were sent some fun Nikki Sivils products to play with!  Here's the sketch:

And here's what I did:

Floating-sm
Can you believe that I actually posted a picture of myself in a bathing suit on my blog?!  I can't!  But you know, I'm always getting on my soap box and telling people to use those photos where you have a double chin!  Use those messy hair, upper arm fat, terrible fashion sense photos!  They're full of emotion and memory.  So I'm putting my money where my mouth is, baby!

Originally, I had planned on using this paper…

…for the large circle in the background of the sketch.  I needed to make it look less like a record, so I doodled all over it with a white pen.

But when I went to use it on the layout, it just didn't work.  In the end, I ended up cutting it up and using bits and pieces.

In the photo above you can see that I used the center (popped up with foam adhesive) and then created a ruffle with the edge.

I also used foam adhesive on the back of the mustard yellow scallop sticker.  I wanted to capture the idea of "floating" in the design of the layout.  And I'm totally in love with those burlap covered buttons.  They come exactly as you see with adhesive on the back.  Super fast and easy embellishment with lots of texture!  Love that!

This cute little toothpick flag was originally a white square flag.  I simply cut a triangle into it, drew a line around the outside, added my date and a bit of baker's twine.  It makes for a lovely whimsical touch to the layout (and helps to bring the viewer's eye up)!

Check out the rest of the team's layouts here.

ALSO, I keep meaning to mention and then keep forgetting that I have an AWESOME class coming up on August 14th from 10am-5pm (with a one hour lunch break) at The Ink Pad.  It's an all-day art workshop called "Something From Nothing."  If you want to register contact the store: 212.463.9876
or theinkpad@aol.com. Here's the description of the class:

It’s time to clear out your stash and learn some fun
techniques along the way.  Bring
your garbage, your junk mail, those ancient die cuts, and even your grocery
list.  We will be using paint,
glitter, scissors, tape, and more to transform those ordinary items into an
extraordinary journal.  Take the
journal home as a stand-alone art piece, as the bones of an art journal or
scrapbook, or ravage the unique pages for card fronts and ATCs.  The choice is yours!

Here are a few images of the kinds of papers we'll be making:

I hope you'll join me!  I think it's going to be so much fun, and as always it will technique and idea packed!  So prepare to get messy and come and play with me!

I'm off to CHA today!  I'll have posts from Chicago starting tomorrow!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Gorgeous layout Julie – that doodling is unbelieveable and that little flag is such a nice touch.
Dying to take your class. Will try to organize the day away from home 🙂
