I have an obsession with making faces.

And not just the goofy ones I like to make in the mirror.

I've been playing with my watersoluble crayons in my daily art journal.

I came back to this after a week or so and now it looks like this:

I really enjoy working on things in stages.  Because I so often create for a deadline, I don't always have the opportunity to do this.  But I find that things you've let marinate for a while turn out better, you know?

Remember this face that I demo'd in class a few weeks ago?

Mine
I went back and added a bit more orange:

Not sure if I'm done yet.  Might go back again with some blue….

And here is a mini (about 2 inches by 3 inches) quilt with a face that's entirely stitched:

I've been experimenting with what I might sell at the CREATE Artist's Faire and I'm thinking some mini face quilts like these will be on the table!

I'm thinking of taking another Portrait Drawing class.  I'd like to get better at making faces.  In the meantime, I'm just going to keep experimenting and having a good time!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Beautiful faces! I love that stitched one…wow!!! I just got a sewing machine, so trying to learn how to use it…super fun. I love art journaling or just journaling in general. I think it gives us time to mull over things – marinate as you say and test things out. A really open free space that’s not for assignment or to show off…it’s a great way to let loose. Whether you paint in it or just write your grocery list – I think anyway 🙂

  • I love the face quilts. Lady, you are so amazingly talented. I’d love to see you at CHA, but too many obstacles in my way even though I live about half an hour away.
