Adventures in Arting Podcast: Episode 100!

JulieQuote-500
As my mother says at the beginning of the podcast, "I didn't think it would last."  But we made it to episode 100.  Woo hoo!  It took us 8 years, but here we are.  On today's podcast, entitled "Looking Back.  Looking Forward," we chat about earlier episodes, the future of podcasts, paying for content, and lots more.  I hope you'll give it a listen!

If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link.  On the off chance that you've never listened to a podcast or don't get why anybody would want to, here are some facts: (1) Podcasts are convenient. It's a recording that is available to you whenever and wherever you'd like to listen. You can pause, stop, start, fast forward, and rewind. Stream it through Apple Music or any podcast service. (2) Podcasts are great for listening to while making art. They provide intellectual stimulation and create a bit of company (like hanging out with friends) without the visual distraction of the TV. (3) Podcasts can inspire and educate you. I often find myself jotting down notes when I listen to a podcast. There's so much I want to remember.

If you enjoy the podcast, please give us a shout out on instagram or facebook.  This helps other people find the show.  Thanks so much!

We've had several headers & logos over the years:

In retrospect, I probably should have named the podcast simply: The Balzer Designs podcast.  But who knew we'd still be doing this eight years later?

In any case, on today's podcast I mentioned that Apple Podcasts only goes back about 75 episodes, but you can find every single of the 100 episodes archived HERE.  And just for fun, here are 10 episodes I think are worth listening to again, with links:
  1. Episode 1 with Ronda Palazarri: What is Failure?
  2. Episode 6 with Nathalie Kalbach, Birgit Koopsen, and Louise Nelson: Thinking Globally
  3. Episode 27 with Briana Goetzen, Louise Nelson, and Arleigh: Carve December
  4. Episode 32: Jane Davies Collage Journey
  5. Episode 40 with Nathalie Kalbach: At the Museum with a Friend
  6. Episode 51: Attitude
  7. Episode 55: William Merritt Chase and the Creative Process
  8. Episode 80: Artistic Fear
  9. Episode 87: Dina Wakley Media
  10. Episode 89 with Jenn Mason: The Art of Pairing

Also, I had the great pleasure of being interviewed earlier this week by Hadley Powell on The GirlPow Podcast.  So, you have a lot of options for things to listen to this weekend!

Here are our recommendations this episode:

I hope you enjoyed this episode.  And the eight years of podcasts.  Thanks for stopping by!

  • Julie, Thank you so much for recommending my Icy Delights online class. Yeah, Dharma has taken credit for it, although back in late 2010 I couldn’t find any info about it online. I remember thinking someone has got to have done this. They were snow dyeing, but no one was ice dyeing. It pretty much took off after the article in QA. It’s quite addictive for sure. Thanks again for not only signing up for my class, but recommending my labor of love. You made my day!

  • Congratulations Julie and Eileen( I hope it’s okay to call you that even though we haven’t met)! 100 podcasts is a huge accomplishment. I love listening to the podcast when I am out walking. It’s been great having so many recently to enhance the walks.
I used to go for walks in the neighborhood with my mom when I was young. She would stop and talk to everyone who was out working in their yard. I can remember hiding behind her and wondering how she could talk to all of these people she didn’t know. As an adult, I really admired her openess to talk with all kinds of folks. Now people say I’m just like her:). My daily walks are taking longer as people are outside in their yards and I stop to just chat for a few momments. It’s great to have interaction with people in person in a safe environment.
When I take a class with you, I enjoy the end when everyone shares something they’ve created or learned in class. I learn so much form seeing how others have interpreted the same lesson we took. Classes that teach new techniques rather than we all create the same product are what I enjoy the most. I always remember how you say we shouldn’t say anything negative about our work during that time, instead talk about what you’ve learned or some part of our work we do resonate with.
I listen to too many true crime podcasts and I want a change so I will be checking out One Good Thing that Eileen recommended.
I like the membersip offering you have and always learn something new for the livestream. I look forward to in person classes in the future whenever that may be safe.
Thanks again for the the podcast conversations. Here’s to the next 100!

  • Thanks for sharing your time and expertise. Love listening to you both. I’m stewing over a challenge I was given by my art quilt group and I knew that listening to you would spark ideas. Thanks!

  • Congratulations and thank you. You and your mother have filled some otherwise mundane moments from cooking to crafting to driving. I have been continuously inspired with the enthusiasm and poignant comments. So glad that you posted the archive because I picked up on your podcast around episode 26. There have been so many things have inspired me. Although I come for the art talk, the single thing that I use most has been the introduction to New York Times Cooking from your mom. (My sweetie thanks you for that one!)
I look forward to sharing more time with both of you!
