Ten Things I’m Thinking About Right Now…

Just some random stuff that's floating through my brain today…

1. This post over at 2Peas made me roll my eyes.  Here's the gist of it:

So, I was in my LSS the other day and the
lady behind me had the cutest kids. One of the kids made a funny
comment and I got a good chuckle about it with the mom. She then asked
me if I had kids. When I responded that no I did not have kids she just
looked at me with the most puzzled looked and then asked, "Well, what
do you scrapbook then?" I was absolutly shocked. I wanted to say "Well,
I still have a life even though I don't have kids!"

I scrap about my life – where I go, how I feel, the things I think about.
As women, I think we too often put ourselves behind all the other people and things in our lives that need to be taken care of.  Everyone, those with children or otherwise, should scrap about themselves.

2. Stumbled upon this Random Word Generator the other day.  Very cool site.  I'm always inspired by the "One Little Word" challenge.  With the random word generator, I can have my own word challenge anytime I sit down to scrap!

3. Rejection stinks.  Makes me feel bad about myself every single time.  I will not be advancing in the Paper Crafts Idol contest.  I suppose I figured as much, but it still hurts.  It's funny, as many times as I put myself out there (design teams, layouts for publication, contests), I am always hurt by the rejection.  It's not like I sit around crying, but I do feel a surprisingly keen sense of hurt.  You'd think it would get easier over time.  Sigh.

4. Something weird is happening with my scrapping.  I just finished working with my Label Tulip kit and my layouts look so, so, so, so very different from my norm.  I'm on some sort of subconscious collage kick or something.  I like them, but it's odd.  I'm looking at them right now, hanging up on the wall, and they look like someone else's layouts with my photos.  Weird, huh?  I'm looking forward to hearing what people think of them after the reveal on July 15th….here's a quick peek:

5. I've been thinking of framing some of my photos.  I take a lot of them and I'd like to display them around the house.  I took this iphone photo through the bathroom window in my Mom's house.

Caleb-Matt

It's my brother and a friend playing basketball!  Here's another recent favorite (also an iphone photo):

6. I received an e-mail the other day and the sender had this quote as his signature:

"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."

On a related note, my husband is fond of saying that, "When one door shuts, you need to find a way to kick a new one open."

I rather like the whole train of thought.  I tend to be a bit shy about putting myself forward, preferring to wait for opportunities to find me.  But, I feel like (despite item #3 on this list – or perhaps because of it) I need to go after what I want.  For instance, I mentioned that people should vote for the Paper Crafts Gallery Idol contest on my blog, but I didn't tell any of my friends or family and send any e-mails or anything asking people to vote.  I don't know if it would have made a difference, but I would have liked to go down fighting, you know?

7. I've been so busy teaching classes, I don't take classes anymore!  That makes me sad.  I love learning and taking classes.  I'm resolving to rectify this situation ASAP!

8. I'm super, super duper looking forward to going to CHA in a few weeks!  Yay!  I can't wait to see all the new products!  AND, I've got a really good secret to share afterwards!

9. I've been painting.  Yeah, yeah, I know I paint on my pages all the time.  But, I've been painting…like on canvas!  It's terrifying and awesome and fun and I'm having a blast doing it!  I will have to share something soon, but right now it's so "in progress."  This is a big step for me.  Feels that way at least.

10. I guess I'm wondering if you've made it this far?  This is a long post, and not a lot of pictures to help you along the way.  So, thank you for reading thus far.  And thank you, in advance, for leaving a comment (but only if you want to).

Have a great day!

  • Thanks for sharing these! I tried the Random Word Generator and got “heresy” — talk about a challenge! 🙂 I love that basketball pic — the screen adds such a cool texture.
Sorry about the Paper Crafts contest. I know what you mean about rejection. I think we feel it because we so love what we do, and its a part of us. When we put ourselves out there, and don’t get the response that we’d hoped for, it hurts because we cared so much — not really about the winning or the acceptance, but about what we put out there.
Just trust me when I say that you are BRILLIANT. Inspirational. Creative-quirky-funky-fresh-and-spectacular. And I’m not even exaggerating.

  • thanks for sharing Julie, yes I made it all the way through. I have a real fear of rejection therefore just can’t even bring myself to even try and put myself out there, I admire you for at least trying to follow your dreams.

I love your husband’s saying. I am currently looking for a new door to kick in. Can’t wait to see what’s inside.

  • Julie…your work is awesome! Contests are great, I put myself out there, too, but we don’t need them to validate our creativity and artistic expression. I do understand how you feel, but…just know we think you ARE brilliant and are so happy that you share with us. …Lisa:)

  • Dear Julie
For a non-card maker, making Top 20 is saying a lot about your creative ability. Don’t ever doubt yourself. There are a lot of creative traditional scrapbookers out there who are very good at mixing and matching papers but there’s no one quite like you. Your style is distinct and yet constantly evolving. You are great with paper and digital elements. You are great at sewing, quilting and so much more. Plus, you’re largely self-taught. Look at your list of published work. And how many design teams you are on. I personally think that there’s no need for pompous self-promotion. Just continue being the talented person that you are.
    Cheers, Y.
