I went to my Portrait Drawing class on Tuesday.

I find myself facing a kind of hilarious situation.  I am completely frustrated by the lack of guidelines and yet that's exactly what I do when I'm teaching.  It reminds me how important it is to be a student in order to be a good teacher.  I had forgotten that totally frightening sense of falling (and failing) when you're trying to do something unfamiliar.  And when I finally started to get a decent drawing going, I became completely strangled in this need not to ruin it.

Hello!

What is my mantra when I'm teaching?  Never be afraid to ruin it!

It's a hard thing to remember when you're in the learning seat.  But it's good for me to feel that fear and go through the struggle.  It's good for me as an artist.  It's good for me as a teacher.  But enough blabbing, here's what I drew:

I came in late (bad student!) and this is the first drawing I did – about a ten minute pose:

Here's the second drawing in progress…

Bifocals-in-progress
…and then more towards finished…

You can see the model on the left side of the photo.  Here are some classroom pics:

  • Awesome- you do really good – I don’t think I could do it at all. I tried when I was in School – we had a very ambitious teach 🙂

  • What a great opportunity for reflection! I sometimes forget too what it is like to be a student.

  • When I saw your first drawing I thought that the teacher’s hair had grown quite a bit and then I saw that the class had a different model (LOL). When “teaching” I find it easier to accept “mistakes” from my students (wonderful surprises) as opposed to my awful “not what I wanted” look. Nice reminder for you (and many).

Yup…I wrote the quote down since I really liked it:-)

  • You did a great job, I have always wanted to take a life drawing class, but am intimidated by thought that everyone is so much better than I.
