I stumbled across Erin Wilson's work on Pinterest and it was love at first sight. I like all of her work, but her works on paper are the answer to so many questions I have about my voice in quilting.
From her website:
- 8” x 10” paper dimensions
- 5” x 5” approximate artwork dimensions
- hand-dyed cottons
- pieced and stitched onto archival paper
I loooooooove it. I love piecing. I love the art and architecture of piecing. But I haaaaaate the quilting part. This feels like such an elegant solution to that problem. (Also, I love that it isn't square and that the edges are frayed — more of that, please!)
Erin has some lovely (and super inspirational) small quilt "canvases" on her website as well.
- 3.5” x 3.5” x 0.75”
- hand-dyed cottons
- pieced and mounted over wood block, finished with wool felt backing
- keyhole on back for hanging, can also stand upright
- 7” x 7” x 0.5”
- hand-dyed cotton, pieced and stretched over plywood and finished with wool felt backing
- ready to hang
I would really love to see these pieces in person because the sizes that are listed just do not compute in my brain. They are so small. The level of details is extraordinary!
I have seen other people wrap quilts around a frame — in fact, I've done it — but I really haven't seen anyone do the loose paper mounted pieces like she does and I think they're brilliant. How cool is this one:
I feel super inspired to make some mini fiber compositions on paper.
What do you think? Are you attracted to Erin Wilson's work?
Thanks for stopping by!

Very nice work! Thanks for the link. I could see some sashiko stitched pieces mounted like this. Or some Alabama Chanin-inspired elements. Or a combo of paper and fabric. So many possibilities! The mind boggles.

Took a look at her website– wow– so many ideas! The best one– working in a block format and then collaging the blocks into a ‘quilt’ (say, gel-printed paper blocks). Thank you, thank you for this post!

I love her work. Have been a fan for years. I, too, ditched the quilting part but continue with the piecing. So much fun to play with fabric.

Julie, Thanks for the link this morning. I was surprised at how small her work was. Absolutely beautiful and so inspiring. I, however, miss the stitches and tend to want to go toward more raw edge within the pieces. That said, I still love her work. Thanks.

O.M.G.!!! These are STUNNING! By mounting them on the wide, white paper backing, she is presenting them as fine art – which they are! It helps you contemplate the fine stitching, the fabric choices & colors… just wonderful.

These are wonderful. Thank you for highlighting her. I used to quilt but also much preferred the piecing over the finishing. This opens my eyes to possibilities for extra fabric I might still have (ok, I know I still have) in a closet.

I think that’s a good point. We can still love the work of people who we have no interest in emulating!

Oh yes, I love this! I’ve done this with some of my odd-shaped art quilts to make them frameable. But, I love, love the unfinished edges and the piece unquilted. Fits in with my basic tenet, one that I try to convey with my art, that we are all unfinished. Thanks for the share and inspiration. I’ll have to give this a try
