Art Journal Every Day: Wrapping Up June and Beginning July

ArtJournalEveryDayLogo-150 If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, all the posts can be found here.  Please read this post first.  There is a flickr group for sharing right here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it.  Just play! You can join the linky list for July right here.

As I mentioned in my last four Art Journal Every Day posts (here, here, here, and here), I conducted an art journaling experiment for June.  I drew a grid of thirty boxes and every day this month I art journaled by drawing a face in one of the boxes.

And finally…

Allfaces-sm

And I've been clicking through all the links left in the June linky list.  (So much awesome inspiration and amazing art!) I found a few people also making grids and/or doing faces and so I thought I'd share:

This is actually a spread that she did in April.  I saw it again when I was blog hopping this week and I think her design grid is too awesome not to share!

Jobi did this grid in March!  And it looks like she did it in a calendar — awesome idea!

Now let's take a closer look at this week's faces:

24
In the last round of comments everyone said how much they liked the watercolor face without any black line.  So I thought I'd try another one. Trying to step away from realism is lots of ways here.  Did the nose really differently too.

25
I did another watercolor without the black line, but it looked super mushy.  So I used a china marker to add in some blunt definition.  I think the figure looks kind of like a dog now.  Not my favorite of the drawings.

26
This was done with a mechanical pencil while looking at a photograph on the web.  This photo.  I don't think I captured the urgency in her eyes, but it was a good exercise for me.

27
Can you tell that I was listening to a Britney Spears song when I painted this face?  Well, maybe the lyrics are a hint!  I love how looking at this face I can immediately conjure up what I was listening to.  That's kind of the point of a journal, isn't it?  A book full of memories and self-expression.

28
My Mother complains that I never do any profiles.  That's because I don't know how to draw profiles.  So I took a stab at it.  This blue alien creature is the result.

29
This witchy girl was sketched from a magazine image of a much more attractive model.  But I love, love, love the bright orange background.  I colored it in with a Sakura Permapaque.  They're my favorite markers on earth.

30
No doubt influenced by my evening at MoMA, I felt the need to make the final face an intellectual exercise.  I sat and stared.  I thought some more.  I sketched in the eye and nose and drop and suddenly thought, "Hey!  Those look like natural elements."  So I played with the idea and I think it's kind of fun!  A good way to end.

All-withpencils
This has been a really cool project, and definitely one that I can see doing again and again.  Filling in a box in a grid is the easiest every day project I've ever tried!  And making it faces was so good for me.  It really forced me to think about different possibilities and get out of my comfort zone!

I look forward to what July will bring!

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. My very talented friend Ronda has a layout on her blog featuring the two of us!  Ronda has a scrapbooking book coming out with F&W Publications later in the year.  Keep your eyes peeled because it's going to be fab!

  • Your filled page for June looks awesome Julie!!! I like looking at grids… a lot of people are filling up grids as calendars lately, Kathryn Wheel started that project
(her blog is here: http://thekathrynwheel.blogspot.com/ ) and they all look so different and nice! I can see myself making a ‘doodle grid’ some time (soon?) but I have so many projects in mind, I need more hours in a day! Enjoy your weekend dear one!

  • Yeah, I am doing the calendar journal at the kathryn wheel for a couple of months now and will continue doing it(you can see those at my latest post), but on the back of my calendar pages I have already drawn the grid for July so I can do the faces…I like that idea. Have a great July.

  • thanks for posting others pages. I keep forgetting to go and look – there are some talented people over there! As for your faces love the witchy one with the orange background – not sure why! And the MoMa inspired one is very interesting never thought of a face that way – God is such an interesting creator the shapes are repeated in some many ways.
I spent part of the month drawing pictures of the pesky chipmunks that dig in my garden. I even gave them words. It was lots of fun and I still laugh when looking at them. Thanks SO much for a fun month! Enjoy your long weekend!

  • I enjoyed your June grid. Once I had a gallery show and after I couldn’t get back to being creative so I decided to monoprint 100 heads until I could sweet talk with the muse again. It worked. I got to 50 heads and then my creative mojo came back to me. If that happens to me again, I am just going to make a grid and work smaller. (I only saved 5 of the heads.) I think the grid would be really good for ‘artist block’. Thanks for sharing.
