Project Life is insanely popular.  And after doing it for two months, I can see why.  I have actually gone back to look at my pages several times.  I love them!  They don't look special, they're not fancy, but I just adore them!  Each week is made up of tons of tiny little collages and I have really been enjoying that aspect of them!  But before I lose my train of thought, I thought I'd share a few thoughts on this year-long project:

Adore

What nobody told me about Project Life is that…

…it takes a surprisingly long time to get each week done.  I've read so many blogs where people claim that it takes no more than an hour a week.  Really?!  I am definitely doing something wrong then.  Choosing photos, editing them, and printing them takes at least an hour and often longer.  Then the putting together takes another hour or two.  I am getting faster.  But it still takes me a while.  But that leads me to my next point.

CHA

The best part of Project Life is…

…that I'm using tons of supplies that have just been sitting around.  Oh, and the memory keeping ain't too shabby.  But really, I'm so thrilled to see the little pockets of goodies I've been hoarding going into an album!  I no longer scrapbook with lots of patterned paper and embellishments, but my Project Life album is full of labels, rub-ons, stickers, and all that fun stuff!

Tinycard

One of the most difficult things about Project Life for me…

…is determining whether or not it's public.  My scrapbooks are very public, but my art journals are very private.  I feel like this project sits somewhere in the middle.  I want it to be an accurate representation of who I am and what my life is like, but I'm accutely aware that someone might actually read it.  I don't like hidden journaling because I always forget it's there and it doesn't actually make it private, anyway.  I'm not sure what to do.

OfNote

Project Life would definitely be easier if…

…I had a dedicated space for Project Life.  Having to haul everything out and put it away means that I really only spend one day a week doing it and that makes it become a massive undertaking.  Plus having to take everything out and put it away is a big pain in the you-know-what.  In many ways this is like Art Journal Every Day.  And the only way that project works is if you don't have to haul supplies around, but that they're right there at your fingertips. I'm trying to find a way to do a little bit each day, but it's difficult with the whole no-dedicated-space thing.

Maywealwaysbe

The thing that makes Project Life faster for me…

…is having lots and lots of journaling cards at the ready.  I did not buy any Project Life supplies other than the page protectors.  I did design some decorative cards and I've been using those.  I've also started cutting any paper scraps I have left over into either 4×6 or 3×4 (to fit in the page protectors).  The cards make it easy — you don't have to think much about design while you're working.  I love that!

Theuniform

In order to do Project Life you need…

…to have an iPhone.  Seriously.  I don't know how I would do it without all of those cell phone photos.  In fact, most of my photos are tending to be Instagram photos.  That's pretty much how I'm documenting my week so I don't forget it.  I know that lots of people do all sorts of documenting, but that seems like a lot of extra work.

Leapday

What I didn't expect from Project Life is that…

…it has completely derailed my art journaling.  Completely.  For two years I've kept a daily art journal.  I've found it very hard to do both Project Life and my daily diary-style art journal because they both serve the same purpose.  I'm still doing a bit of art journaling, but it's not that diary-style.  It makes me a bit sad, but life is cyclical, so I'm sure that I'll get back to it.  I hope.

Custompageprotector

My best Project Life innovation is…

…the washi-tape-hole-reinforcer page protector.  I cut a 12×12 page protector in half and sealed one edge with washi tape.  Perfect for my needs.  But then I was left with a page protector half with no holes to allow it to be placed into my binder.  I didn't want to lose any of the "real estate" of the page protector, so I built a new edge with tape and then punched holes in it and reinforced the holes.  I love, love, love how it turned out!

Bouchonbakery

When I'm working on Project Life I always…

…try to represent every single day in some way.  I know that you don't "have" to, but I like to have each day of the week represented by a photo or a thought or something.  Thus far I haven't run into the issue of not having enough stuff to fill the pages.  When each day is represented, you're most of the way to a two-page spread in no time at all!

CHA2

When I'm working on Project Life I never…

…try to color coordinate anything.  Or just coordinate in general.  That is way beyond my brain's capabilities.  I work on each pocket as a totally unique and individual collage and I figure that it will all work together because it's all me.  And anyway I don't think the point of Project Life is how it looks.  It's much more about the stories and all the little bits and pieces of life.  That's why I make a big effort to include as much journaling as possible.  Words matter.

Thegifts

I'm glad I'm doing Project Life because…

…I love, love, love the pages I've made.  I'm not really an event scrapper and this project has allowed me to scrapbook lots of different events.  Love that!  And Project Life also gives me permission to include photos that I wouldn't normally scrapbook because there isn't enough of a story for a whole page, but I can easily stick a photo with a few notes into my Project Life binder!  They say that life is lived in the inbetween moments.  I feel like Project Life captures so many of those inbetween moments.

Photocollagepage

I have a feeling that Project Life…

…might completely replace scrapbooking for me.  Gasp!  It's true, I cannot lie.  Lately I just don't feel the need to scrapbook.  I'm very happily recording my memories and my photos.  I'm getting my artistic needs met through art journaling and painting.  We'll see what happens as the year advances, but right now all of my memory keeping needs are being satisfied.  In fact, I think I'm actually a better and more complete memory keeper with Project Life.  All sorts of life ephemera ends up in my album and so many photos of the little nothings of daily life.

Envelope

If you're doing Project Life I'd love to know your thoughts on the subject!

  • I haven’t started PL yet because there are too many what ifs: What if I don’t stick with it, it can get expensive just to start! What if I miss too many days, will I get frustrated? What if I get redundant? When do I start? At the beginning of the year there is usually too much going on to start another new big project.
I know there are ways around this. I am thinking about asking for page protectors and an album for my birthday coming up in a month.
I mean, I only just did a December Daily for 2011 successfully, and it’s more of an art journal than anything else.

  • I’m only just starting Project Life. Never mind if it’s already March, I had to wait for such a long time to get the page protectors from the online shop I’d ordered them from. All that you said is going to be very helpful for me. One of the things I like about the project is, as you say, that I’m going to use lots of scraps and whatnots that have been sitting on my desk or in drawers for a long time. My fear is that it is going to take me more time than what people usually-except you- say. AND I’m afraid I’ll have to get an I.Phone!!!!! The best is that it will really help keeping track of everyday big and small events. Thanks a lot for all the tips and comments about this project.

  • Hi Julie,
Your Project Life album is GORGEOUS and lots of fun to look at. Thanks also for posting your thoughts about the project.
I am NOT doing Project Life this year. I totally need a break from it. I made a PL album last year, but quit in May. I simply couldn’t stand the project anymore.
I found it too maddening and time consuming. I had a scrappy mess in my small apartment, and the clutter overwhelmed me. Plus, since I don’t have children, I always lacked photos each week.
I’m happy that you shared your thoughts. I wish you well in your PL weekly activities. Thanks for posting and keep sharing!
    Much love to you, always.

  • First off, I have to say I love your pages. They are gorgeous! This is my first year with PL, and unfortunately, I have to say I’m feeling the same as Damiane. I find it much more time consuming than I expected, and I think probably more costly than regular scrapping, by the time all the supplies are purchased and/or printed. Plus, I miss my regular scrapbooking. And I find too, because I don’t have children, (or maybe because I just don’t have a life, HA!) it’s hard to fill all the pockets. And I wanted it to be a book about our life — mine and my husbands — but to get him to participate, even just to give me a story or two, is quite like pulling teeth. I don’t know if I’ll make the entire year or not . . . but I do so enjoy looking at others’ beautiful books!

  • Hey Julie, I’m into third year of Project Life and I love it as much as ever before, for all the same reasons as you. I bought a few matching American Crafts binder albums, stacks of page Protectors, and have been planning to use up my stash too. It’s been fairly simple in the past but I’m going to make up some journalling cards to make daily writing easier. I have been given a Selphy photo printer for my birthday too and this will help make it a daily, rather than weekly project. I love your post on this, thanks for the extra inspiration!!!

  • I agree with most of what you are saying Julie. I’m thinking that PL is the way I would like to go in the future over scrapbooking (lets not be hasty with that thought, but I am really loving it).
I don’t have an iphone, have to wait for my current contract to run out but if I do get one, I can see how much easier PL would be. I carry my huge DSRL everywhere and that becomes quite a chore.
I too am loving using all of my scraps and lots of yours 🙂 from the big box you sent me a couple of years ago. It’s great to use up all of the accumulated stuff from over the years. I only bought the page protectors but have just purchased the blank journaling cards also.
I am slowly changing my thinking about PL and how I go about the layout. To begin with I was only journaling about the photos, now I’m carrying around a small pad and jotting down all of the memories for the week, photo or not.
Over all I am totally in love with Project Life.

  • I have watched people do project life for a long time and I have yet to see an album that I wasn’t impressed with. The IDEA of doing that is so overwhelming when I only (maybe) get to crop outside the home once a month has totally blocked my mind from opening up to it. I have three young boys and like you said so much of life is lived in between the moments…stuff that is said..I wish I could find a way to it.

  • This is my first year to attempt Project Life, too, and I completely agree with the time factor issue. A few weeks ago I was thinking that I don’t like it, but decided for a couple of reasons (such as letting go of my fear of anything that isn’t “matchy”), that it would be a good creative exercise to keep going for now. I do love that I’m using supplies that I’ve had for years but never used. Perhaps it is less intimidating to use them in a 4×6 area, than trying to include them on a full-sized layout.
While reading your post and looking at your pages, I decided that my perspective could shift to seeing it more as the guidebook to all the digital photos on my computer. The stories and info about the things we’ve done will be there, and if we ever want to print more pictures to go with them, great. If not, great.

  • OMG Julie, you touched on everything about PL that I knew in my heart would be my feelings about it. The only thing different is that you actually committed to doing it and I did not. I am, however, starting an art journal, though it is not daily!!! So I guess we just find what works for us. I am so glad that you wrote this blog because I so want to do PL, but just can’t commit to the time yet. Maybe as I grow in my creative life, I will evolve into it. For now, I am still happy and fulfilled, so that’s a good thing! But I love how honest you are about your life. You are so real to me and I love you all the more!

  • Julie–your creative approach to PL was what sealed the deal for me. To keep myself from being overwhelmed, I decided from the get-go that mine would be monthly, not weekly. Also, as a single empty nester, I find that monthly is plenty, and I can add in when I feel like I want more. And I decided that it would be a combination of digital work and paper (first real hybrid project I’ve done!)
I’m using PL as another exercise to let go of perfectionism, and it’s working well!

  • I want to comment on the ‘problem’ you have with private – public journaling. I don’t do Project life, but I am keeping weekly ‘Chronicles’ for the third year now. I too faced the private vs public problem in the beginning. I decided that I wanted to journal everything, ‘the good and the bad’. It’s MY journal. After I photograph the page, I blur the most private parts or ‘secrets’ in Photoshop before I put the page online. That way, viewers are not able to read the text (or some sentences) but still see the layout and get the ‘feel’ of the page. It works for me.

  • Yes Julie testify! I was having fun with PL for a while but it’s come to a standstill the last couple of weeks precisely due to the printing and prep time it requires. It’s overwhelming and yes it’s does take an entire evening to get 2 weekly pages done. I also have all these surplus images since I tried pre-printing photos for a while to keep up with the daily whirlwind. I’m not doing the pre-planning and sketches I see some of the scrap personalities do. Seeing those just makes me tired! I just take notes here and there and focus on the photos.
PL has helped me understand my scrap style and color preferences better and I do like seeing the finished pages so I will keep plugging along- just not this week. I’m giving myself permission to skip weeks when I feel overwhelmed- better to capture most weeks than none if you ask me.
Your PL is GORGEOUS!!! Great idea on the washi divider and yes you will need a dedicated storage area for your pre cut items- that does cut down the time you need a bit. 🙂 And yes I also have problems drawing the line between deeply personal and public- like what do I want to record so my daughter (or anyone else who cracks the album open) gets the real deal when they take a peek? How “real” do I want to get? It’s a balancing act. GREAT post- this is one of the best scrap issues blogs- always something new to learn or think about here.

  • lovely hearing your thoughts on project life, because yes, it is everywhere! especially helpful to know that it takes a while to put together. I’m sure there are different ways to do it, but I also didn’t think it is necessarily less time consuming than traditional scrapbooking. I think it all depends on your process. I feel like PL is just another form of expression.
BTW, karenika includes her art journaling pages as printed snapshots along the bottom of her page protectors!

  • I enjoyed this article so much! I have never tried Project Life, but I wish I had done it throughout my daughter’s childhood! She’s 15 now, so it’s not too late, but still…
I started scrapbooking when she was a baby, but I’ve never made a complete album! Just random pages here and there. I even taught scrapbooking for several years, and had my own brick and mortark store. But I’ve let scrapbooing go the past few years. I love to make handmade books, art journals, and travel journals. But I’m very intriuged by the idea of PL. Your comment about not being an “event” scrapbooker hit home with me. I’m not either. But I do like to record the little details of our everyday lives, so I’m going to check out PL and give it a whirl. Thanks for sharing your experience with it so candidly, and for inspiring me to try something new!

Maybe when I’m no longer working I will look further into doing it but right now I know it isn’t for me!

  • Love your book!! I do think this is a better way to scrapbook especially a trip but I am not sure it would work for someone who works every day away from home. I just do not do anything that interesting. I go to work and I come home at least in the winter and cook and blah blah. I thought about starting it because I like that the page protectors are divided in an easy to deal with way but still not sure. Anyway thanks for sharing your thoughts and I really like your journaling cards!

  • Love your album, Julie. It’s fantastic.
I tried PL for about 2 months and just had to let it go. I love to look at what others are doing and their albums are very inspiring.
It just took me too long. It was eating up all my time and getting in the way of what I wanted to do so I started avoiding it and falling behind.
I joke that I “broke up” with PL because I’m just not ready for that much commitment.

It just took me too long. It was eating up all my time and getting in the way of what I wanted to do so I started avoiding it and falling behind.
I joke that I “broke up” with PL because I’m just not ready for that much commitment.

  • LOVE your PL, the pages you show are so “you”! I have only been doing the art journal every day now since November and I’m not ready to commit to anything else at this point and time, loving the art journal way too much. Also my life is just so boring, I don’t do anything worth documenting, I’m not as active and busy as you are. I totally get why you could fill up a week with things that are interesting and fun, you never seem to stop. Girl do you ever sleep? I totally get you wanting to keep somethings private, you put your self out there for all of us to learn and enjoy, some things need to be just for you.

  • Interesting thoughts. I’m not doing project life but I can see how it would fulfill the memory-keeping that scrapbooking provides. Love the washi reinforced edges.

  • I just started PL this year and it has TOTALLY pumped me up again. My mom died in October 2010 and from that day on my desire to scrap was gone. I’d force myself to do the occasional page, but the passion I once had for scrapping was GONE. We even moved to a new house, I got a great new scraproom that I loved decorating, setting up but atually creating in it didn’t happen. Enter Project Life….I LOVE the pages I’ve done so far, and like you, my PL pages are made up primarily of instagram photos. I love that I can document the days of my kids and I, but also the little things that happen at work, thoughts on the commute home, etc. I admit also that my process takes much more than one hour. In fact I spent three hours on it yesterday and all I did was select, edit and print my photos. I still have to do all the journaling but I have been sick most of this week so am cutting myself a break. I normally like to have the week done by Sunday so I can start fresh on Monday.

  • I’ve been intrigued by PL for awhile but not willing to commit the time to it. I do love the idea of making these small memories and not caring if they coordinate… love the look of your pages. That said, I’ve just bit the bullet and bought some of the special page protectors. I think I will shoot to do it for a month and see where it takes me.

  • I really appreciated your thoughts on PL today. So real, so honest. I am not a PL type…I started a journal, one day, did about 6 pages over several weeks. That sort of sums me up. I do scrapbook though…love the peace, the memories, the absorption, and playing with my stuff. And I do it whenever. PL is too intensive by its very nature…almost every day, etc. Can.not.handle.it. I am sure my teens will be glad they have the big memories safely scrapped. And hopefully a scrapbook on their parents..as soon as I can get to it. Love your blog.

  • This is my third year doing PL. It took me 2 years to figure out that buying all the coordinated pieces and matching album just was missing it for me. Those books look nice but kind of canned. This year it much more about using my stash and creating my own elements. I did buy various Becky Higgins page protectors but put them in a non PL album. I am not as hung up anymore on having a picture a day…my life just dosen’t work that way. More like random shots and occasional spurts. I assembly the pages that way as well. So far so good. You seem to be off to a great start!

  • Wow, Julie! Love your pages and sharing. Even enjoyed reading all of the comments here thus far! I started PL in June nearly 3 years ago, to document my 48th year, but am still with it. Love it even more since there are so many examples on people’s blogs… it keeps the ideas fresh and fun!
I started an art journal at your encouragement 6 months ago, and do find it hard to keep up with both…as it feels like I am double journaling. But as long as I get things recorded somewhere, I am fine with it.
Again, Julie, thanks for sharing and keep it coming! I appreciate your daily inspirations.

  • Thanks for the great post today. I was thinking of doing PL. But, I have this problem with following through on all of my crafty endeavors. I have canvases – empty, paper – not used, supplies – still in their original package. So, now I reward myself for creating with little treats of supplies. I’m not sure that’s too wise either. I do appreciate your honesty about the project and am kind of glad that I decided not to undertake it…yet.

  • Here’s an idea I sometimes use when I have more than one project and never enough space. I stick them in big baskets (like a laundry basket or smaller). Sometimes I use boxes. I throw the stuff I need for the project in the basket as I go along on other projects. The baskets are open so if I need an item from project 1 for project 2 I can find it quick. When I want to work on a project, I only have to unload one basket. When I’m done working for the day on a project but it is not completed, I throw everything back into the project basket. I find this a great temporary way to work on multiple projects at the same time. Each basket has its dedicated items. This works for me.
Thank you for your blog Julie, I find it really helpful and fun and inspirational and…!

However one of the differences between our books, is that a lot of mine is designed digital (I journal right on photos when I am processing them or designing and journalist on cards for example). But I too am loving using some of my older stash. However I am super behind. Just started on feb. but I’m not giving up. This is for me (well maybe for the family too, lol) and I will do it my own way, timely or not. thanks for sharing

  • Gosh, its like you were in my head! Love your post Julie. I see so many PL layouts that are matched and color coordinated and that just doesn’t work for me. I treat each pocket separately and end up with an array of color throughout my spreads which I love!
Your thoughts on PL are right on as far as how I’m feeling about the process. The whole time factor thing is the same for me. Its a huge undertaking…not a quick one for me either. But I’m loving the results.
You are an inspiration and I love your take on it all! And now I’m off to purchase some of your journaling cards (that I somehow missed before now!).
    Thanks for your post!

  • a confession. i first learned of project life right here on your blog, and i immediately thought, “now there’s something i can maybe actually keep up with!” however, so far i’ve failed miserably. i bought the sleeves and a box of journaling card and put them in book i got on sale at michael’s. that’s unfortunately as far as i’ve gotten! and again it’s the time factor. it’s the printing of the pictures that has stumbled me. i don’t have an iphone, so i’m using my nikon, but it still have to print the pictures….and i haven’t printed a single one. my book sits empty. i’m thinking i’ll eventually get it, but it won’t be a weekly account. it’ll just a something that spans whatever timeframe…which may end up being several years. i think i’m okay with that!

  • I agree with everything you have said in this post about Project Life. Although I don’t take a photo every day and try to take photos when I think of it with my “good” camera (Nikon D7000) because I like the quality of the photos better than my iPhone (too grainy), I do take a lot of pictures with my iPhone. Why? Because I always have it wherever I go. This is my second year doing PL. I did it the first time in 2010 and skipped last year. PL this year has taken the place of my daily art journaling although I have been taking a lot of online classes and continue to do sketching, lettering and watercolors. After 2010 I never did get back to my mountain of photos waiting to go on a scrapbook page. I did start a written journal for everyday in 2010 that I am still keeping up.I usually journal at the end of each day about what went on that particular day. I use a Moleskine plain notebook for that. I love the fact that you can have just one photo of an event or day and use it. Before when I did chronological scrapbooking I never used those one off pictures. I have been getting my prints from Costco (free shipping as the closest store is 2 hours from me) and send off an order once a week so I am way behind on getting the photos in the pockets. But I leave my 3-ring binder with the journaling cards out on my coffee table in the living room and write on the cards every day or at least every 2-3 days from my journal if I have let it go due to being too busy. And I do think PL is replacing scrapbooking for me, except for a few special events I want to record. I have a small shoebox container with my stickers, labels, date stamps, blah blah that I want to dress up my pages with so everything is accessible whenever I have the time to work on it. And I also love looking back at the pages and seeing what we have been doing. I do my private journaling in my written journal and have my PL pages be more short that I don’t care who reads it. Thanks so much for sharing your pages with us.

  • Julie, This is my third year also. The first year I did an entry each day and love it, but last year I decided to use a spread each month. I also add what ever else I create and am loving this more informal way of tracking my life.

  • I think in the same way that everyone interprets Ali E’s “December Daily” for themselves, the same thing will happen with Project Life. I am doing a PL-type project this year, but without the branded products. I’m doing a very simple weekly 8.5 x 11 page in a page protector of the same size, in an album I already had. I knew that unless it was very simple, low stress, and took very little time that I wouldn’t do it or I’d get behind. So, even though 90% of my scrapbooking is traditional, I’m doing this in PSE, just cropping photos to random sizes and plopping them on the page, with a block of journaling. For weeks when I don’t have many, I add a paper journaling block or some random scraps or ephemera. I’ll have to see how the pages hold up (just printing on my inkjet printer, on card stock), but could always be reprinted professionally eventually. This is the perfect size for our relatively low-key life. I highly recommend going your own way like this, if the full-blown PL sounds like too much for now.

  • Thanks for sharing your PL thoughts and enthusiasm! I’m doing it for the first time and am really enjoying it. I didn’t buy any actual PL products and am feeling the freedom like you. I love that my pages don’t look coordinated. I agree with you on a lot of points and have learned a few things too (like using cut up protectors and washi tape!).

  • I have struggled to the point of obsessing (OK, maybe past the point) about PL this year. I did it last year, but this year I just can’t get my stuff together. I think part of the problem is the all of the examples. Some people just put SO MUCH work into it. This weekend I decided I am going to stop over-thinking it and do a weekly LO in a Smashbook. Just get the damn week documented, have a bit of fun and move on 🙂

  • This is my 4th year doing PL (the first year it was called Project 365). I did a picture a day and used the products in the kit. The next year I got a little braver and used a few things other than photos but felt like I was “repeating” a lot of the photo ops. Last year I went to a week at a time and did not worry about the daily thing. Added lots more bits and pieces of “life” such as Ali E. does. This year I am doing whatever I want and you have confirmed for me that this is the way I want to go. I. LOVE. YOUR. PL. I had drifted away from scrapping because it took too much time to do one LO. I discovered Artist Trading Cards and loved the fact that I could still play with alot of my scrapping nosh and produce small works of art. That made me happy but I started missing scrapping. Your approach to PL is perfect for what I was looking for! Thank you once again for inspiring me Julie!

  • I started PL this year after two years of wishing I had. I AM IN LOVE!! I work full time outside the home and have four children yet I am pleasantly surprised at how easy PL is to work with. I take my “big” camera with me every where I go, and my cell phone pictures work well in a pinch. I print a picture or two every couple of days and slide them in to page protectors leaving only the finishing touches for Sunday afternoon. Every Monday I find myself looking forward to collecting the memories of the week ahead. Sorry only that I didn’t start it two years ago. For those of you who are on the fence hop on over and give it a try. You’ll be glad you did.

  • I’m not doing project life because … well I have no excuses. It just never appealed to me until this year and I always thought of it as something you had to start on Jan 1. After reading your post I am considering it much more. Maybe it will be my birthday present to myself this year. Just 3 months to decide.

  • I notice that some people are put off PL as they think it has to be completed on a week by week basis. Quote: “Plus, since I don’t have children, I always lacked photos each week.”
I love PL but I just print any photo that I want to include, collect them and any memorabilia in a basket on my desk and make pages as and when I want to. I don’t try to produce weekly spreads or coordinate pages, I date my pictures and insert them in a generally chronological order, I may put in a monthly title when I get to a new month but there is no reference to weeks. Some weeks have very little but others have lots going on so moving away from this artificial time restriction lets me include what I want, when I want and removes the stress of keeping up each week! Just my 2cents worth 🙂

  • This is the most honest and real post about PL life I have read so far. I thought I was nuts. It was also taking me way too much time to go through, edit and print photos. Then to actually work on the project was even more time. Yes, I too have gotten faster, but it is really a big project…the time is needed to put into it. The only other thing I do is I don’t worry about filling up one or two pages to complete a week. If it comes up short and doesn’t fill it up, fine, if it spills over, fine. As long as I date things, life keeps going. Couldn’t agree more with the flow and feel of your PL…and love the little snapshot photos, perfect way to keep things a little more private.

  • Hi Julie
Just two weeks into PL. I pondered whether to do it for ages but we eventually got the page protectors in the UK so I bought some. I’m using scraps up too and not buying the core kit.
You touched on lots of things that I thought about before starting too.It does take lots of time and having to get it out etc can be a pain. But I love the two weeks so far.
It was sort of an aha moment when I was sorting though a pile of half planned layouts. I found little bits of ephemera that didn’t justify a whole page but I wouldn’t want to loose them and PL means you can keep all those little bits of life.
Thanks for sharing those amazing pages.

  • Oh Julie, how I enjoyed this post! And the comments have been interesting and enlightening too!
Don’t know if you noticed, but I’ve been catching up on my comments on your recent posts. Cuz I finally got myself an iPhone, which I love, and so I’ve been keeping up with your blog on my phone, and have been too lazy to comment that way. In my jammies, with my laptop, on the couch, that’s the way to comment!!
I’m on my third year of Project Life and it works for me. The first two years I did a two page spread for every week, used all of the BH products, added small bits like receipts and ticket stubs, and considered it done. 2010 was the year of my BC diagnosis, and I was able to keep up with Project Life, in this simple format. Loved that!
This year, I’m trying to be a bit more creative. While I did start out with the Clementine core kit, I’ve added more of my own stuff, and its housed in a non PL binder. I can see myself continuing with the page protectors next year, but just drawing from my own stash for everything else — goodness knows I have enough that needs to be used up!
And I love what you said about having to have an iPhone. I haven’t even had mine for a month, and I’m loving how much easier its made PL. I’m working on last week’s spread, and the only photos not from my phone are from my daughter’s music concert. No more point and shoot getting banged around in my purse!
I read a comment where someone mentioned grainy phone photos, but I’ve been very happy with mine. The 4X6’s have been fine.
Lastly, I must say how much I LOVE your Project Life pages! I adore your style and its so evident in your pages! What fun Julie!!

  • I’m just starting Project Life, but will be doing it on an event/as needed basis:) I can’t imagine doing it every week. I also don’t want to have walls and walls of albums. So, my plan is to document the highlights – holidays, birthdays, what the kids are into right now, friends, etc.
So, if weekly is stressful – think ‘as needed’:)
Either way – I think it’s going to be fun!
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts,

  • Hello … and thanks for “thinking out loud” about PL !
I’m in the same mood Julie describe 2 post above. I will do my PL in a cool way ! No daily/weekly pages. I will only try to document events as they happen. As you say, to me, its mostly an alternative way to scrap, as some events are difficult to tell in a page and not sufficient for a mini book … but nice to document. I will juggle with the fact that some stories will play out in a single photo and other will spread other multiple pages ! We’ll see !
… and I will try to continu my “kinda art journal”, wich is a unique way to express feelings, and LO that are the best way to highlight something or someone!
Thanks again for sharing your Art !

  • Really enjoyed your thoughts and insights into creating your project life album. I am enjoying my project life because I am not locking myself into any specific expectations about it. I want it to just be an overall picture of life with bits and pieces of memorabilia, stories, quotes, photos, and art/creativity throughout, but not necessarily on a daily or even weekly basis. If I skip a few days or even a week or two, no problem. This project can be anything you want it to be — so on days when I’m motivated and feeling creative, I do something that is a little more time-consuming…when life is very busy, I keep it extremely quick and simple. That’s the beauty of this system. I adapt it to my needs and time constraints. I love it! The main thing for me is to keep with it and keep it simple. 🙂

  • I just received my starter kit, pages, and the binder is coming tomorrow. As a non-scrapbooker, it looks daunting to me, but I bought it because it looks manageable.
You have some great ideas here! And I’m going with your “never make things match” idea because I don’t want to live in insanity.

    1. I’ve had my PL kit for a couple of years now. I started with a bang and ended with a whimper 🙂 Stacy Julian set me free from chronologically scrapbooking, but I would like to have something smaller along those lines. Maybe monthly or even yearly.
    2. Becky Higgins says, “Project Life does not have to be used for the picture-every-day format.”
Hope that helps some of you 🙂

  • Thanks so much for posting all the real life hangups/issues/whatever they may be’s about Project Life. I was a former 1 picture per layout scrapper with lots of embellishing and it was such a timesuck to only preserve a SINGLE memory! I do laugh at the “one hour a week” as I think that is totally unattainable. I decided for my first year that I would do a monthly approach, and even though I got way behind after completing half of January, I REALLY wanted to do this because I thought this concept was amazing to chart all the little things & milestones in our family without anyone feeling left out of the memories preserved. I just finished April and am so glad I did not throw in the towel. I did purchase page protectors & a core kit, but find that I do most of my journaling digitally on my photos before printing and pretty much use the cards in the kit to adhere my instagram photos to, but that may be related to using most of my pockets for photos instead of journaling. Thanks for keeping it real 🙂

  • Hi Julie, This is my third year also. The first year I did an entry each day and love it, but last year I decided to use a spread each month. I also add what ever else I create and am loving this more informal way of tracking my life.

  • I am with you here Cathie. I to started PL thinking that it would help me focus more but found it took way to much time, and didn’t give me enough freedom, plus I love working on several different projects. I found it was either PL or the other. I am no 7 months behind on PL, so I guess I’d say I broke up with PL to. Just don’t have time. Maybe hopefully in the future.

  • Okay, I’m totally obsessed with your pages! I have, roughly, 9 million questions about how you made the different elements of it, but I’ll start with one. How did you get the journaling typed on the yellow sunburst card? I know how to print on cards but how did you get it perfectly set around your photo? Did you use a typewriter or a computer?

  • Wonderful post. I really like your approach to the project and your insights in the post, even the way you wrote it. I, too, am enjoying Project Life, though I don’t use any of the branded materials for it. I do use a kit club though. I’m also really keen on going back and doing previous years, even if it’s just a month in review type concept, because I agree that it captures all those little moments. I’m not really an event scrapper either, so that kind of thing, the small stuff, is really foremost in my mind when doing PL. I’ve almost completely stopped scrapbooking as well. I only use a layout for stories that are really super long. If you’d like to see my pages, some of them, and most of this year, are linked here: http://www.aerynkelly.com/search/label/Project%20Life

• Ask your husband stories away from the project life stuff. Maintain eye contact and ask questions. He may surprise you.
