I recently made a cute little fabric bracelet for my brother's girlfriend:
It's a super easy crafty project, so I thought I'd share the how-to. You can use a strip of any fun fabric you have around.
1. Iron a strip of fabric in half.
The size of the strip is up to you. The bracelet will end up being 1/4 of the width of the original strip. So a 4" wide strip will yield a 1" wide bracelet.
2. Open the strip up.
The ironing created a crease in the center of the strip, which we are going to use as a guideline.
3. Fold one side down to meet the crease line and iron.
4. Fold the other side up to meet the crease line and iron.
5. Fold the strip in half and iron.
You want to fold the strip so that those messy raw edges are caught on the inside of the folded strip.
6. Stitch around the entire strip.
I use a regular straight stitch to do this. You could stitch by hand if you don't have access to a sewing machine. But it's a lot of layers of fabric to go through, so make sure you have a thimble to save your fingers!
7. Measure the bracelet on your wrist and snip off the excess.
8. Stitch around the snipped end.
This ensures that the bracelet stays together and inhibits the fabric from fraying.
9. Hand stitch a snap to your fabric strip.
Snaps come in two pieces. Make sure that the way you're stitching each half on will allow the bracelet to lie flat on your wrist.
This means that the two snap halves go on opposite sides — one on the top side and one on the underside.
Now it's time to wear your fun new bracelet out!
And I just couldn't let that tiny snip of fabric from step #7 go to waste, so I made this ring:
I stitched in a jasper bead as the focal piece of the ring and added some glue to the ends of the fabric in order to inhibit fraying. In my experience rings get abused like crazy and require a little extra care.
