If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here. All of the previous posts can be found archived here. There is a flickr group for sharing right here. Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day! No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week and you've blogged about it, or put it on flickr, please leave a link in the linky list at the end of this post. Thanks!
Last week I posted the five basic supplies I would give to a beginning art journaler and I asked you to send me two photos — one sharing your five additional supplies and one with a recent art journal page. Here's a peek at what you sent:
Michelle Mathey – Pigments of My Imagination
- Sharpie Poster Paint Pens (water-based opaque paint marker) – they come in several different tip sizes and are so convenient adding text, dots and other highlights without mess.
- STABILO Aquarellable pencil – writes over anything and is water soluble! I literally use these each time I sit down to play with my art journals.
- Bombay India Ink – So BLACK and permanent – great color.
- Script/liner paintbrush – I use this brush to line things in black ink. Adds zing and contrast.
- Liquitex Gesso – Gesso allows one to paint over anything!!
Stephanie Paige – Stephanie Paige Creates
- Palette Knives. They are such a fun way to add dimension and texture with paint on my art journal pages. You can even use an old credit card to get the same effect!
- Ink Sprays. These are so versatile and have so many fun applications! They can cover large areas and backgrounds with ease, they can be sprayed through stencils, and you can even paint with them to get really vivid color.
- Acrylic Paint. These are the backbone of my art journaling supplies. I love the way heavy body paint in particular can be used to add layer after layer of color. It's all about layers!
- Crayons. I love my black and white crayons. I use the white one to draw on pages first thing to act as a resist, and I use my black one to add depth to my pages with shading.
- Stencils. I am a stencil freak! I don't mind spending money on stencils because they can be used over and over again and are a great investment. They can be used with modeling paste to add dimension and texture, used for tracing, doodling, spraying, painting, and more!
Miriam Schulman - Schulman Art
Ruth Levy – Lerusho
- Gesso, I think it's essential for the 'oops', also easy to soften some tints that came out to hard, or to give a texture to page with stamps before applying watercolor.
- Stencils (I picked the 12×12 so it will be visible on the photo, but for journaling the 6×6 are perfect), I love TCW stencils for layering my spreads.
- Stamps, I like background stamps, like Nathalie Kalbach's mixed media sets, wish I could carve my own, seems easy when I watch Julie making it…
- Pan Pastel shadows kit (it's five different tints of shadows), love giving some dimension to my work and actually till now I discovered that Pan Pastel works on every surface I used so far
- Molotow white paint marker, love lifting things out with white lines and Molotow is the paint marker that worked for me no matter how heavy is my paint layer.
Marjie Kemper – MK Designs
Mary Brack – Me, With My Head in the Clouds
- Washi Tape
- Letter Stickers
- Book pages for backgrounds, especially dictionary!
- Gesso
- Punchinella in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Jill Russell
- Lots of ephemera in all colors, shapes, weights and textures. I often color copy my own artwork to use in my journals later. Dictionary and book text pages are also fun to add in.
- A quick adhesive for little pieces that need a strong stick. Scotch quick-dry adhesive works great.
- Caran d'ache Neocolor II wax pastels -softer than colored pencils and denser than wax crayons while being very responsive to a wet brush
- Acrylic paints in a variety of colors – great for filling in background pages
- Gel markers that write on dark and light surfaces – vibrant colors and wonderful when combined with other markers in layers.
Dion Dior – Dion Dior Art & Illustration
- Twinkling h2O's by Luminarte (cakes of watercolor paint infused with crystal and mica)
- Silks Acrylic Glaze by Luminarte (fluid acrylic paint infused with crystal and mica)
- Watercolor Pencils (either Derwent Inktense or Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer)
- Neocolor II Water Soluble Wax Pastel by Caran d'Ache
- Zeta Series Sketchbook in a 5.5" x 8.5" by Stillman & Birn (The one with my art on the cover..lol!) Smooth, hot press, super heavy weight, high quality paper.
Grace Mendez – Coached by Grace
"I created a blog post to answer your question! I bent the rules a little because I don't normally use stamp pads or stencils in my art journaling. So I gave two substitutions plus the additional five."
- Derwent Inktense Pencils -These colored pencils can be used dry and when wet with water, they behave like watercolors except that when they dry again, they are permanent.
- Neocolor II Aquarelle Artists’ Crayons by Caran D'Ache -They are creamy when applied and when wet they act like watercolors and blend easily.
- Graphite pencil – Great to sketch out designs or lettering before painting. I also like to date my pages with pencil. When I volunteered in the archives department at the Museum of Art and History Santa Cruz, they taught me to use pencils when writing on documents because of the archival quality. Uh oh, what if years from now I opened my journals and everything was gone but the dates!
- Stabilo colored marking pencil -I use this pencil to sketch with and then use a water brush to get instant shading. Here is an example with only a blue Stabilo and a water brush.
- Kneaded eraser – It doesn't leave any residue and can be kneaded into any shape.

What inspiration! I know that I've discoverd a few new supplies that I want to go and play with! (Gel markers?! How cool is that?) Hopefully you're inspired too! And now, I'm issuing you a new challenge:
Create an art journal page limited to any ten supplies. Send me two photos: a photo of your finished page and a photo of your ten supplies, along with a supply list, your full name, and a link to your blog or other spot on the web. I'll share all of the pages I receive!
I hope you'll play along!!!
Here is this week's linky list:
Thanks for stopping by!
Wonderful inspiration and interesting to see how many supplies are listed by almost everyone. Love how that washi tape is stored in that tall glass vase.

Great stuff! I have messed with a lot of these! My New Best Friend is the Molotow Paint Marker. Smooth application, lovely colors, lots of sizes, and fillable markers make these a great choice! My friend the art store manager used a white one to simulate gesso when decorating his black-covered sketchbooks, and it looks fabulous–a trick I am “stealing” immediately!
