One of my favorite art blogs is called Colossal.  Recently I noticed that I've been loving his posts sharing animal art.  So, I thought I'd link to a few of my faves.  Click through any of the links to see more photos and read more details.  I hope you find these critters as inspiring as I do!

Textile Moth and Butterfly Sculptures by Yumi Okita

Insect-8

I love, love, love these!  I want the one on the left.  It's so tactile.  I want to pet it.

New Lifelike Paper Birds by Diana Beltran Herrera

Birds-6

It's amazing what people can do with paper.  The motion of these sculptures is part of what makes them so exceedingly lovely.

Animal Murals by Fiona Tang Appear to Leap from Gallery Walls

Fiona-7

I love the sense of humor in these paintings.  I love the freedom of line.  Just amazing!

Artist Hubert Duprat Collaborates with Caddisfly Larvae as They Build Aquatic Cocoons from Gold and Pearls

Drupat-7

My Mother referred to this collaboration between artist and insect as slave labor.  I think it's rather cool.

Let me know which one of these animal art projects is your favorite!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • The birds are my favorites, too. The moths immediately reminded me of the Australian Textile Artist, Annemieke Mein. Check her out in Google images. There isn’t a lot of her work on her website.

  • Love the textile moth- would love to see a luna moth from this artist.
And the mural…well I love that too.
Don’t you love when you see someone’s work and immediately want to see more of it? That’s how I feel about the four pieces you posted about.
    Have a great day!

  • As a doll maker and contemporary art quilter, I love the moths the best. Doing a 3D project like this would be the best blending of both my artistic worlds. However, my favorite is the dragon (?). I love the way he appears to be 3D and flying off of the wall. Thank you for sharing!

  • I love the work of Tang. At first I thought every mural was 3-D and was amazed to find that they are trompe l’oeil! An amazing artist! Thanks for sharing all of these wonderful works of art.

  • Each of the artists is amazing. I find it almost impossible to choose a favorite. The moth does beg to be touched. The bird looks real! The gold cocoon so fragile. I checked the links and was even more amazed at all of their other creations. Thanks for the link, which is now bookmarked.

  • Great little curation of Colossal awesomeness! Yeah, I want to pet that moth, too! And, I am quite struck by the patience those paper sculptures must require. Beautiful.
The cocoons are interesting, beautiful, and discomforting all at once, especially after your mom’s comment. On one hand, the caddisflies are able to accomplish their goal of metamorphosis so the materials probably don’t matter to them. On the other hand, perhaps some sort of mutation will arise and these flies will only bother wealthy, bejeweled women. In that case, press on Hubert! Lol!

  • The caddisfly larvae hands down gorgeous! The paper birds are wonderful too. But the artistic observation/vision and love of nature and natural materials that produced that ‘slave labor’ are almost beyond comprehension. The abstract products are so beautiful.

  • I follow the Colossal blog and had shown my husband the Caddisfly Larvae post days ago because I found it to be so fascinating. Don’t know if you can call something slave labor if one is harnessing what the creatures already do naturally. I personally wouldn’t mind if someone were to switch the humble ingredients in my kitchen for more extravagant ones. I’d still be cooking dinner either way. . . the metamorphosis would be more impressive though!
