I'm so pleased to be a spokesperson for the Brother ScanNCut. It's a product that I genuinely like and use all the time! As part of my spokesperson duties, you'll be seeing lots of video tutorials from me on using the ScanNCut. Some of the videos will be project videos (one of them appeared two weeks ago), but if you're like me, you want quick and dirty explanations of how to use the various functions of the ScanNCut. Therefore, I'll also be sharing short and useful technique videos each month! Here are the first two:
Julie's 4 Fabulous Tips for Cutting Fabric
In case you need a cheat sheet:
- Use the High Tack Fabric Support Sheet always when cutting fabric.
- For a cotton weight quilting fabric, adjust your blade speed to 1, your pressure to 5, and your blade depth to 4.
- Keep separate blades for paper and fabric. Paper dulls blades, that's why quilters have separate paper and fabric scissors. Also: change your blade frequently when cutting fabric!!
- When cutting fabric with a fusible web, cut it paper/fusible side UP.
Tips on Scanning In Your Handwriting
This is probably my favorite thing to do with the ScanNCut. In the video I share lots of tips on getting the best results when scanning in your handwriting and converting it to a cut file!
If you have ScanNCut technique questions, I hope you'll let me know. I'll try my best to add your technique to the video queue!
As a side note, I wanted to share that I hired a friend of mine to help me make my videos look a bit more professional. His name is John Houghton and he's a wonderful freelance filmmaker.
If you're ever looking for someone extremely nice, super fast, and very professional, hire John. He's all of those things! (Plus he managed to make my insanely cluttered apartment look kind of okay!)
ALSO: The good folks at Brother are looking for you! Do you love your ScanNCut and love making things with it? Brother is recruiting talented people like you to create projects for stuff like tradeshows, HSN, and use online. If you're interested, send me an e-mail (put BROTHER in the subject line) with the following information:
- Your full name.
- Your location.
- Your blog (if you have one, not required).
- 3-4 images of stuff you've made with your ScanNCut.
- 1-2 sentences about why you love your ScanNCut.
Thanks for stopping by!

Please note: I am a paid spokesperson for the Brother ScanNCut, but all of the ideas, commentary, and enthusiasm are my own!

Julie, your videos have always been wonderful, but these are extraordinary!
I think the focus and relaxation you display are so enhance by handing off the video work to someone else and his work is so wonderful – clean, clear, artistic! And the spaces around you are so artistic, I thought it was filmed in a museum! Thanks especially for de-mystifying the machine. As a not-so-savvy computer user, I am beginning to think I could operate this machine. Thanks also for your generous sharing of your talent and techniques! Celeste

Julie,
I am so glad you are doing these tips and tricks. I have tried for hours to figure things out with. It much luck. You should have written the manual for a Brother.
One video I would like to see is how to cut margins around stamped images, handwritten, or pictures. Also a lot of the symbols used on the machine have meanings and I’m. It sure what they are. In the Handwriting video you spoke how one of the symbols meant to cut the image inside and out. Thanks for clarifying what that symbol meant. It’s a little confusing in the small manual brother provided for those of us without much tech knowledge. Thanks you so much. I look forward to these videos!

Julie, I purchased the machine but returned it because the screen was too small for me. However, when I saws you on HSN, the screen looked larger. Have they enlarged it or was that the magic of television? You make a great spokesperson for the machine and I am glad you were selected because you explain so clearly. Blessings to you in your endeavors!

Every time you post one of these vids, I watch them, despite not having a Scan N Cut myself. I just noticed my local craft store now stocks them…oh dear, the budget is likely going to take a hit lol

Your tutorials are so helpful and well done! I love my Scan N Cut for cutting paper, but was totally hating it for fabric after having many disasters! I think your 4 fabric tips will make a huge difference in how I feel about cutting fabric, and I’m inspired to try again! You are definitely a fantastic spokesperson for this machine!

Julie, Thanks, Thanks, Thanks. I bought the Scan N Cut, but also have many questions as to the buttons and their use. I agree you should have written the manual. The tip for the cutting lines around the letters is great. I like to make my own designs and then take them to Scan N Cut Canvas, but also have had some difficulty understanding all of it. Hope you will add something in your videos about taking your own art into the machine and the use of the Canvas software provided by Brother. How can we let Brother know how professional you are with these tutorials?

Julie, I tried your method, it worked better, but a couple of things..It looked like you put the design in the machine to scan with the protective sheet still on the mat. I have not done that in the past and my mat is almost ruined and not sticky anymore. Do you think t is because I didn’t leave the protective cover on while scanning. I am sure it has to come off before cutting. I tried putting a glue stick on the old mat and it just made the paper stick totally to the mat, unrecoverable.
I would gladly pay for classes if you had some to offer to learn all about the machine.

Julie, I tried your method again with a brand new mat. I used a differnet word and the machine didn’t recognize all of the wording, like an “a” and letters that have a cut out of the middle. I have used the machine to cut out printed words that I print from my computer and it works great, it is just a little tricky for handwriting. I did follow your hints to get the letters to combine all together nicely, just the handwriting itself is a little tricky to get even pressure with my marker. Any hints for this?

I am using a special “scanning mat,” not a regular mat. You can purchase one from any Brother dealer. It’s called a scanning mat. It’s not sticky and the clear film holds what you’re scanning in place. Also, please don’t use a glue stick on your mat. Use a baby wipe to clean it and that should bring some of the stickiness back. Hope that helps!

Hi Julie:
I have sold my scan and cut because even with all the help of the videos it still did not have the quality I have found in spellbinders, sizzix, and silhouette. I know you believe in it and maybe it will get perfected in the future, but right now , in my opinion, brother needs to re-do the manual and sell the same machines online and at amazon that they have in their dealerships. My friends that got theirs from the dealer seem to have better quality. I got my machine from HSN because of your demo. I even emailed you about the mat on TV that you had that was black for scanning….why was that not included in the machine package? Keep up the good work of bringing products to help us enjoy our crafting and journaling. I still value your opinion of products and techniques over many others in craft field.

Worked in sewing center for many years and one of the reason their is a price difference and a difference in product included is that dealers (brother) spend time and money training their employees to give you (customer} all the tools you need to too learn all you can about the product you purchased. Some things are just better purchased from a dealer and the cost for that is not much for what you get.

I think you are the most helpful person on youTube showing Brother ScanNcut and have learned so much watching you. Do you know how to cut shapes in a frame that stays in the card, I have welded hearts together but want them to stay in the card with the background cut out. Hope you understand this.

I am having a prob and I’m not sure if it’s the mat or the blade. This is a brand new replacement machine. The machine cut well early on. Then it started to miss areas of cuts. I changed my blade (expensive solution) but was not much better. So I cleaned my mats and am waiting. I hope that is the solution. The mats seem to degrade in quality even when using baby wipes. I shouldn’t have to replace blades with only a few hours on it, right? Honestly I love your vids and have learned so much. I have quite an investment in this equipment and want to continue but am very frustrated. I would prefer not to have to stop in the middle of a project to wash mats. Any other suggestions? Maybe Julie could email me. I have had no luck with Brother customer service.

I want to do a direct scan to cut on fabric with fusible qpplique attached. I can’t put the fusible side up as I am scanning the pattern on the fabric (i.e., a flower) and need the scan and cut to see the flower to cut it. I also need to use a fusible such as Soft Fuse or Misty Fuse, as this will be a quilted fabric collage and can’t easily be quilted with stiff fusibles used such as Steam a Seam Lite, etc. What is the best way to cut it with paper down, and still cut through but not leave a lot of the fusible on the mat (which is what would happen if I took paper off and put direct fusible on the mat) I watched your applique video but it was using a scanned shaped on “blank” canvas of fabric. Thanks in advance.

New to Scanncut. Enjoying what I have learnt to date. Thanks for your videos. Could you tell if it is possible to isolate a section of a whole picture, then use that smaller picture on another coloured paper.
So what I’m trying to do is but a couple of cats, each are in different places on the picture.

Have you anywhere you could direct me to relative to using the correct ‘mat’ for what project? I think I saw one recently and you were scanning a photo and the plastic cover sheet was attached. My ScanNCut did not come with one so I need to see where I might purchase. Just want to be sure I’m getting the right one. I have gotten the high tack one for using with fabric so now I’m in search of this one I saw.

I appreciate your tips and tricks. Thanks, Julie!
Is there a 1-page “Cheat Sheet” of the Scan N Cut icons/buttons with a brief explaination of them. That would be so helpful for me, as I forget things so easily.

I have a new Scan n cut2 cm650w. So far so good but a chart showing what all the function buttons (Icons) do would be very helpful. Does anything like that exist? Thanks
