Today I want to talk about "Dash Circle Dash."
When I designed this stencil I called it "Texture." It was later renamed by the good folks at TCW. But texture explains exactly my intentions with it. I wanted to be able to quickly create lots of overall visual texture.
I made this scrapbook page back in 2013…
…which is ugly and in no way shows off the awesomeness of "Dash Circle Dash." Sigh. But that was then and this is now!
As you might guess from my earlier confession about the name, what I really like to use the "Dash Circle Dash" stencil for is creating visual texture! From my Gelli Printed Journal:
And here's a long piece of fabric that I layered and layered…
…and then turned into this fabulous purse:
I put in a dark lining because I'm prone to open pens and messes in my purse that mark up a light colored lining.
I didn't have enough of the hand painted fabric for the whole bag, so I added some colorful batik pieces that I felt went with the feeling of the painted fabric.
I made my purse based on a free pattern I found here.
Today I am giving away BOTH a 6×6 "Dash Circle Dash" stencil AND a 6×6 "Stripes" stencil. The "Stripes" stencil is also great for creating visual texture. Here's what it looks like:
Here's a piece I made with it back in 2012:
More recently you'll find it all over my Gelli Printed art.
It's perfect for adding a couple lines where you need them!
If you would like to win BOTH a 6×6 "Dash Circle Dash" stencil AND a 6×6 "Stripes" stencil leave an answer to the following question in the comments section of this blog post:
What's your favorite stenciling technique?
Please note: You must leave a comment on this post, e-mail replies will not be entered to win. Winner will be announced next Wednesday.
Thanks for stopping by!

My favorite stenciling technique is stenciling with the Gelli plate. I love what you did with the fabric. Did you use fabric paint? I have a lot of muslin that this might work well with. Now you know what I’ll be doing today! I would love to add these stencils to my collection of Balzer Design stencils!

LOVE your bag! This is too difficult a question!!! I love using stencils, there are so many wonderful designs and I love using them in different ways. If I absolutely have to pick just one…at the moment I’m loving using my home made texture paste with stencils – sometimes plain white texture, sometimes coloured, sometimes adding colour to the white while the stencil is still down. It gives a wonderful effect.

Oh my word, I have been searching high and low for the circle dash stencil. Fingers crossed this is my lucky day!
As for my favourite stencilling technique, I’m a traditional kinda girl – give me a cosmetic sponge and acrylic paint and I am in heaven!

You make me want to get better at my sewing! Thanks for the link to that bag pattern, I’ve pinned that. One to try when I do finally manage to sew a straight line 😉
As for my favourite stencilling technique – maybe using them with texture paste to create deep textures – I love doing that!

I’m pretty new to art journaling, and especially new to playing with stencils! So far my favorite techniques are gelli printing and spritzing color through them into the page. I’ve tried several techniques, and so far these are the ones I go back to when I need some visual texture.

Probably my favorite technique is to use one of those little sponge daubers, the kind that fits in your finger like a thimble and use an ink pad, acrylic paint or pan pastel. It seems to give me the most control. Love your texture.

One of my favorite techniques is after stenciling, moving the stencil just a little and then stenciling again with another color. Cool shadow effect. I love the look of black paint or ink offset that way with a little metallic. BTW, I love that purse!

I need to expand my stencil uses. I only use them for heavily misting paint over to add texture to backgrounds for use in scrapbook layouts. One of my favorite things about your blog is how you inspire me to use things I have in a new way. Looking forward to using stencils with my as yet unused gelli plate. Thanks!

At this point, I have only spritz and use a dauber to color with stencils, but I would love to try using a Gelli plate. I need to be braver and get some texture!

I have three favorites can’t choose one… 1.laying paper over the stencil on my gelli plate. 2. On paper inked with distress, spray water through the stencil, and pick up ink with paper towel to lighten area and 3. Painting/inking directly on stencil and stamping with it.

Love your bag using your hand-designed fabric. I love the look of the sprayed ink through the stencils, it is so wispy! I also really love the idea of using the modular paste in stencils to give some actual height and dimension when working on paper.

My favorite way to use stencils is to lay them over paint on my gelli plate and pull a print through the stencils. I love to lay stencils on paper or gelli prints and spray shimmer mists through the stencils, too.

So far I’ve only used stencils for texture medium and spray painting BUT I’m going to be taking a Gelli Print workshop soon. I would love, love, love to add this stencil into the mix! Thanks Julie for so much inspiration and fabulous tutorials! Cindy B.

I love using a stencil and getting it all painty or inky and then turning it over and pressing the actual stencil part onto a piece of paper so that you get the negative space actually printed.

I just purchased several of your stencils. I can’t wait to try them out on my Gelli plate. I guess the stencil I use the most right now is an alphabet stencil. I have questions about this post: do you treat the fabric with a medium when you paint it? Also, what type of fabric do you use for painting and sewing.
Thanks for all you do, all you are and all you share. I love the vibrancy and energy of your art.

I’ve been wanting dash circle dash for some time — it’s like embedding Morse code into art!
and I love using iridescent medium through a stencil and then daubing acrylic ink over the whole surface. The medium picks up a bit of the ink and makes a shining contrast with the ink-stained paper.

Recently I was shown the technique of using wax crayons. Have your stencil under the deli paper and rub the crayon over the top and wow… Texture!

All I can say is WOWZA! That purse is amazing! I just ordered some canvas to use with fabric paint and you have totally inspired me to try some layering techniques.
Hmmmm, so many fun ways to use stencils, how can i only choose one? One of my faves is to use my stencils with modeling paste. I love the texture that it adds to a page. I also like to sometimes use a stencil as a guide to add stitching to a page; this list can go on and on…………..using stencils just rock!

Omg, love your bag! Now I really need to learn to sew. My favorite think to do with stencils is to spray ink through them. It’s fast and instantly gratifying. If I’m feeling more patient, I love to use modeling paste with them. I love texture! Thanks so much for the inspiration!

I LOVE the fabric you designed. What a great idea. My favorite way to stencil: I recently made the most fabulous journal out of heavy grocery bag paper. I saw the “how to” on YouTube, but don’t remember the woman’s name who made it first. Still, mine is different anyway. After the journal was put together, I painted lots of metallic gold marks all over the paper, which turns the paper into this great, almost leather looking stuff. Then I stenciled flowers, etc. in turquoise over the gold…wow. It is really very, very nice. I can see your two stencils making the best marks over the gold paint…hummmm, maybe I will win this time???? :o)

I like both of the stencils. LOVE your purse. Great pattern and colors, nicely sewn, too. I have used stencils many ways, such as with ink pads, paints, sprays … swiping, dabbing, rubbing, pouncing … and more. Yet, I find myself going back to where I started with them 25 yrs ago, which was applying ink with a sponge. Thank you for a chance to win. 🙂

Like many before me I think your bag looks awesome and I cant wait to get stenciling on my gelli plate with some fabric and make one of my own. My favourite stencil technique however is using dyllusions sprays through my stencils into my journal for backgrounds… or with shiva oil sticks onto fabric. I would love to make some fabric for a bag using the dash circle dash on the outside and the stripes for the lining.
Thanks for all your inspiration

I guess my absolute favorite is using stencils with my gelli plate but I also really love using them to make backgrounds in my art journal. And now, seeing your gorgeous purse, I think I’ll have to try using them on fabric.

My favorite technique is applying gesso to paper, letting it dry and then applying acrylic – a few colors, then placing stencil on top and using baby wipe to remove some of the paint. Love the effect! That being said, stencils and gelli plates go together like peanut butter and gelli! Love your work, love your stencils!

Your painted, printed fabric purse is fantastic! I suspect it can hold plenty of art supplies for an outing.
I think my favorite stencil techniques are ghosting (such magic) and reduction stenciling. Of course, sprays are also fun….and pouncing with paint…..

I use all of the techniques already stated but probably my favorite “result” is using molding paste with my stencils on books that I’ve deconstructed to use as journal covers.

I like your bag very much! My favorite stencil technique is probably using it as a stamp after painting through the stencil. That second negative space stamp always turns out to be my favorite of the two sets of marks. Thanks for this fun giveaway!

I just discovered the joy of sprays. I’m having a lot of fun using them with stencils. Your stenciled bag is amazing! I’ve never thought about stenciling on fabric – another technique to try!

So far, my favorite stenciling technique is with texture paste. Love the dimension and no matter how many times I do it I can’t help but squeal with delight every time I remove the stencil. I have just enrolled in your Gelli print class though and am really itching to give that a try. LOVE your bag and the fact that all that stencil goodness can go on fabric. Thanks for sharing as always!

Oh, oh, oh pick me, pick me, pretty please! I love these stencils and like many of the other comments, my favorite way to use stencils is with the Gelli Plate. Your stencils, I have a few of them!, work particularly well with the Gelli Plate.

My favourite stencil technique used to be starting with my stencil and a texture paste then more stencils with lots of different colours but I just bought a gelli plate and it’s a whole new ball game, so much to be explored.
I love your fabric and the purse you made with it and I wonder if you are using a special paint or just plain acrylic paint.

I like to “reverse stencil” by taking paint off, instead of applying it. Love your bag! What kind of fabric did you use?

I love stenciling in all sorts of ways, but my favorite go-to method is probably ink pad and blending tool for application. I feel like I have better control when I can start light and add more color. I pretty much use a blending tool no matter what the medium is. Also love texture paste and a stencil applied with a palette knife. I love your stripes stencil! Thanks for the inspiration as always!

LOVE THAT PURSE!!!!! Favorite technique is ghosting..moving the stencil slightly over and down and stenciling again. I don’t have a gelli plate (shocking I know!!!), but I need to get one.

I enjoy several ways to use my stencils. I love them with my gelli plates of course. I like to spray watercolors over them in my art journal. Recently I used a dragonfly and flowers stencil and just outlined them onto a watercolor card. Then I watercolor painted them. I used pearlescent watercolors on the dragonfly and it was so pretty. And last I use them with my acrylic paints. My favorite is probably with my gelli plates though.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this totebag/purse idea! Even though I don’t sew, I could still make the stenciled fabric and go find somebody to make the bag. Yep……just might have to do it.

I love the variety of ways you can use stencils in these shapes. I am always inspired when you post one of your sewing projects on your blog. Thank you for the link to the purse pattern. I am definitely going to download that and make one with some pretty stencil painted fabric!

Love your bag! Thanks for the chance to win your awesome stencils. I love using stencils with modeling paste. The raised, rough texture is hard to beat. I also love using them with Pan Pastels. They layer so cool. Have a great day!

I think I might have to create some cool fabric!
My favorite stencil technique is to apply gel medium through the stencil, let dry, then mist and water down and mist some more and let drips run through the design, like Plinko.

Love love love your purse! Favorite technique that I always go back to is texture paste through a stencil particularly some of the “doily” stencils. Then rub a little color into it using my gellatos.

My favorite stencil technique is to use spray colors (inks, fabric paint, etc.) and make a COMPLETE mess all over the place!
I have been known to just trace the outlines of stencils with pens & color them in just for the heck of it too.
Someday I hope to get to Gelli printing.(Like need ANOTHER thing to do!)

Love the fabric purse you created!! Although I do use stencils with recognizable figures (faces, birds, butterflies) my favorite way to use stencils is on the gelli plate as layering texture. I tend to use only parts of a stencil and I layer layer layer to create very distinct patterns that are MINE!

I wish I could use stencils as creatively as you. I’m still at the stage of your “ugly” (NOT!) scrapbook page. So far, my fave technique is to use spray paint, and then layer the stencils.

Love the purse as I am always looking for something big I can slide over my shoulder as I walk with a cane and need to be balanced off. I’m like Picasso in that I have my periods. Right now I’m in my distressed period and am making a lot of art with distressed inks and sprays. With your stencils I would spray them on unstretched canvas in one direction, then slowly turn the stencil directions until I have dash circle dash in a round, like Row, Row, Row Your boat. Because I like working with vintage Black miniature dolls, I would put a doll in the middle of every other circle and the stencil would give each doll a textured blanket to be in the center of. The first piece of art I ever sold in my life was like this, and I’ve since sold 4 other pieces like this. Not bad for a beginner. I follow you faithfully, particularly since I’ve just moved out of New York, and you always give me ideas for new pieces.

My favorite technique, is the pouncing technique with a cosmetic sponge. I love the bag, did you use fabric paint on this. I think I need to start making some of my own bags. What a great idea.

Difficult to choose just one. I still like to dab with a sponge or spritz some ink, but the gelli is my latest love. The reveal is always such a treat. Your purse is amazing! What paint did you use to make it permanent? Acrylic? It’s really wonderful. Please keep all the good stuff coming. You are so inspiring.

Love your new bag!! I use stencils with my gel plate most of the time and I also like using them in my art journal. I don’t really have “techniques”…I just either use sprays or pounch paint through them.

I am new to mixed media and your blog was my first discovery of this wonderful world (you’re also my first art pin in Pinterest). So far, I am using alphabet stencils but for my next project, I want to print a travel photo on fabric with a painterly effect using lots of textures. Thank YOU.

My favorite use for stencils (it MUST be because I use it the most often) is for plain old pressure embossing, using a stylus to push the paper through the openings to make raised images, or, of course, debossed images if you use the other side….my glass coffee table with a lamp underneath it works great for this application/technique.

I like using the stencils with distress ink in my art journal and PL. I really love using the stencils with paint on the gelli plate.

Your purse is adorable! Looks like it holds a lot, too. My favorite stenciling technique is also an oldie but goodie: I use a big stencil brush and distress inks through any stencil or punchinella. It gives a soft look like you used pastels and is sometimes just the little touch that is needed.

Technique….I do not know if mine has a formal name…I just have at it!
I paint with either watercolor or acrylic for a background color.
I stamp with hand carved stamps with permanent stamping ink.
Add more paint or sprays through stencils.
Fling some ink or paint.
Repeat until I like it!
For some strange reason, I never did get the dash circle dash stencil, even though I have always admired it.

Your designs, both ‘old’ or new, really appeal to me. I love your use of color – something I am challenging myself to learn. BTW, your purse is just fantastic! I may have to try that once I bring my sewing machine out of hiding!

Oh, and as to my favorite stenciling technique – outlining with ink or paint pens. I love the smaller additions of color against the white background.

I have been collecting stencils (mostly yours), for a while now. I’ve been watching your videos (the Mixed Media Workshop Series). I have been working with alcohol ink. I hope to start journaling to practice techniques and make product charts. Now, I really want to start mono printing. I had rotator cuff surgery about 7 weeks ago, and when my arm is strong enough I will start printing with my Gelli plate. Yah!!

Awesome hobo bag Julie! Favorite stencil technique is to use a palette knife with oil paint. In my abstract work you can’t really tell it is a stencil…just looks like I am very cleverI Scrape excess paint off the stencil, again with the knife, and wipe quickly with Turpenoid to clean it. Would love to try this technique with the awesome stencil offer!

What a great BAG!
I have no gelli plate, but the comments are creating a NEED.
I like to simply paint a page with watercolor or acrylic, and then hold ink spray far away and add shadows of ink through stencils. Truly just background.
LOVE stencils. And I don’t have those ones. :o)

Your bag is fabulous. I love using stencils in many ways. I think my favourite is Dyan Reaveley’s ghosting technique. (Spray background with ink, then spray water through a stencil, leave for a few seconds & blot dry.)

Favorite Stencil Technique?!? : ) I’d say spray ink attempts…usually I “screw it up” but have fun playing with them anyway.

Hi Julie!
I love your designs, you are a very talented lady!
I love making my own stencils.. Last time I made one I call ‘Funky Feather’, mixed up some Artist Acrylics with a bit of fabric medium and decorated a black tote… feel free to hop over to my blog to check it out 😉
There are a couple of techniques I enjoy… I will email you 😉

I like to clear wet emboss areas that I have stenciled (usually with stamping dye ink). Then go back and add more color in the areas covered up by the stencil. The embossed areas are not affected by the second layer of dye ink.

I am experimenting with so many techniques that I am not sure I have a favorite. I am trying to get better with capturing the fine details of stencils without bleeding underneath… so sprays are a challenge for me unless I am going truly abstract. I love gelli and stencils and have started playing with pan pastels and they look really cool. What I want most is to make a bag like the one you shared. That is just way too fabulous! Canvas… here I come.

I also love, love, love your bag! My favorite stencil technique is just to start playing with them, and not hold back. I use acrylic paint, ink, guesso, sprays, molding paste & whatever is in front of me. I really like to take paint away through the stencil, with a damp towel.

I love playing with stencils and have several of yours but not enough. My favorite technique is using a texture paste through the stencil and then a spray ink. I would love to purchase a Gelli plate. Good things come to those who wait. Love the purse – too cool!

Well, I am covetous of that juicy bag beyond belief! A favourite stencil technique is ‘ghosting’ with Gelli prints, and I’d LOVE to win these stencils!

I absolutely LOVE using stencils with any kind of texture paste. I’ve used molding paste, heavy gesso, glass bead gel paste, fiber paste…Anything I can scrape through a stencil to create dimension. LOVE your bag!!!!

I love to use stencils with my gelli plates. It’s so much fun to layer with them. I stencil with both fabric and paper. My second favorite technique is using sprays with the stencils (like Dylusions or alcohol inks). Stencils are a great way to add texture!! Your bag is so fun and colorful! Your work is very inspiring!

I love to spray my paper with 2 colors, then put the stencil down and use a baby wipe to spread it out within the stencil, sometimes taking a lot of the color out, sometimes just blending.Sometimes I put another stencil on top and blend again with another baby wipe.

PURSE! This is what I’ve been wanting to do with my Gelli plates for so long!
Love using stencils with bleach pens on fabric – also love using them with fabric paint & Shiva sticks on fabric as well.
And for embossing on card stock.
And for using on the wall with oil sticks.
Good heavens, I need to take all my stencils out again…

I really like using my stencils on the Gelli plate, (and LOVE your Gelli plate journal, inspired me to make one too and I doodle all over the patterns) but that being said, I’m a newbie too and would love to learn new ways to use stencils… I also LOVE your bag and can’t wait to make some fabric using stencils! Too many ideas, too little time!
Would love to own your dash stencil! thanks

Stencils are fast becoming my go-to tool. . . need a little texture here, also enjoy using stencils with paste for resist, add a little bling before paste dries. . . awesome for background. . .guess there is not favorite technique, just grab a stencil and create! Your stencils are so versatile. . .love the oldies!

I like to use stencils on fabric, usually the stencil forms the background to other embellishments like embroidery. I also like to use impasto medium so that the stencilled area stands up a little and I like to fade the colour in and out over the stencil so that it looks old and faded. This dash and circle stencil is ideal for the way I like to work.

Right now I’m enjoying using a stencil by putting it over acrylic paint and rubbing the paint off through it. Sort of a ghosting effect. Love your painty bag. Love your blog. Such great ideas. Thank you.

What a cool, unique tote bag/purse – So so cute! Once again you’ve inspired me to create something wonderful 🙂
My fav stencil technique is actually a combined technique of stamping patterns through the stencil as well as outline some of the stencil openings with a Micron pen then doodle freestyle inside the outlined shapes. Might be a little too much pattern for some people, but I think it looks lively and fun!

Wow! Your bag is fantastic! I love the colors and the way the print changes from spot to spot. Definitely eye candy! I love using stencils with my Gelli plate, but I think my favorite use is to layer them in my mixed media pieces. Sometimes I use different stencils in varying colors in the background then add a final stencil that covers most of the piece on the top.

Well I guess I have to add the gelli Plate as well, although on fabric instead of paper. Your handbag is beautiful!

Fabulous purse! I just love it. My favorite way of using stencils is to use embossing paste. The textures are so fun. These stencils would be perfect for adding texture-your first labeling of it was right on target. Thanks for t he chance to win.

These are the types of stencils that I end up using over and over as they work so well for my art journal backgrounds. My backgrounds usually involve 3 layers using watercolor, sprays and stencils as the final layer. This is before I even get to art journaling.

i recently discovered make-up sponges for pouncing acrylic paint over stencils–works so well and prevents the paint from soaking under and muddying up the stenciled image. a sponge roller works really great, too!

I like to use a small airbrush with my stencils as a love to blend multi colours together.. Very effective with leaves.. I have tried with with sponges too but my airbrush gives a delicacy and more control. I also find it is easier to make multi layer stencils this way too…. I combine lots of techniques to get the effect that is in my head… I wish I could turn my head on its side sometimes and shake out all my ideas… So much easier lol.

That bag is AWESOME!!! I am getting ready to place an order with BlueMoon and your Circles & dashes stencil is in my cart. I will have to hole off, ya never know maybe next week could be my lucky week, if not then I’ll order it. As for my favorite technique…hmmm… you ask some of the toughest questions. my #1 is; I like to use sprays (store bought and homemade) with my stencils, a very very close second id I like to use my stencils to add texture/visual to my work, molding paste, gesso, joint compound, fiber paste, etc. I really would love to get the hang of the Gelli Plate. I usually just end up with a big mess.
Thanks for the giveaway. I want to just say, I think you are looking totally FANTABULOUS!!!! I’ve always thought you a beautiful woman, now you glow, you just look genuinely happy. Not saying you didn’t before, but now you just radiate!!! Love Ya!!! (((HUGS)))

Your bag is fabulous. And I love how zips are now your thing, lol! You go, girl!
And, seriously, you are asking us to choose ONE stencilling technique? Argh! I suppose I would have to go for the one I tend to do the most which is just acrylic paint and a make-up sponge, but I like layering that with also laying down paint and wiping away with a baby-wipe – do that with the same stencil and 3 or 4 colours of paint and it just looks fantastic. Close second is spraying water through a super detailed and pretty stencil on a water-reactive ink background (such as Dylusions or similar)… because it’s just so pretty and don’t really need to do much more to it!

Close second is spraying water through a super detailed and pretty stencil on a water-reactive ink background (such as Dylusions or similar)… because it’s just so pretty and don’t really need to do much more to it!
i can say I’m a bit boring, but my favorite stencil technique is to use them with PanPastels and mix the colors 🙂

My favorite stenciling technique is to use a makeup sponge and golden paints to create layers in a background for my art journal. However, I just purchased a gelli plate (finally gave in) so that may change 🙂 But I love, love your fabric piece and the purse you made. I’ll put that into my “things to try” list! Julie, you are truly an ispiration!
God bless.

I’m very new to this, so I don’t have many (any) techniques 🙂 Currently, I use things I find around the house, like bubble wrap, lace pieces, stuff like that.

I (heart) that bag!!! I’ve pinned the pattern – thank you for adding that link! Do you just use straight paint on your fabric? what type of fabric did you use? All my supplies are packed 🙁 but happily we are finally moving home :D. I’ve read some cool techniques that I must try when I unpack my goodies. I recently discovered watercolor through my stencil then sprinkle salt, let dry then wipe off. I loooove the extra texture it creates. Oh please pick me, I’m always happy to add to my ever growing balzer designs stencil colletction.

I love this stencil design! I don’t remember seeing it, when it first came out. I have two favorite ways to use stencils. First, using Distress inks and blending tools. Then, I flick water on it, and blot with a paper towel. Second, I love using them with pan pastels. It’s such a fast way to add an interesting design to your project. I especially love layering lots of different stencils, with the pan pastels, after spraying each layer, with a fixative.

These stencils rock! I love the tags on your layout, and I definitely love the layers and texture that they create! And I, too, love your bag. I want to try dry embossing cardstock/patterned paper with my embossing hand-tool and stencils. Who knows, stencils are good for so many things!

I like to use a mixture of paint and baby powder to make a paste then spread it over the stencil. Gives a texture you can feel.

Awesome purse Julie! Love how you have paired the fabrics up. One of my favourite techniques is to scrap some Gelatos into a pool of texture paste, mix it to get a swirl of colours and scrap over a stencil. Instant texture and interesting colour marbling!

I totally agree with everyone, your bag is marvelous! I’m going to dig through my fabric stash to see what I can paint on! I love stencils for many techniques but right now my favorite is with texture paste. Can never have too much texture! Thanks so much for all you have taught me and for so much inspiration. You’re fantastic Julie! And now I think I must get a Gelli plate because of you!

I’m quite new to stencilling, but I love using the stencil with spray paint and then creating a reverse image by putting some paper on top of the sprayed stencil. Overlapping a couple of times gives a faded and blended look that is perfect for backgrounds or for cutting into pieces to use on for instance tri-fold cards.
