Guest Post: Reduction Stenciling Using Washi Tape with Marjie

January is California dreaming for me!  Lots and lots of classes, classes, classes!

CaliforniaMap

  • San Jose: I'm teaching two fantastic classes at A Work of Heart.  January 3 is The Stenciled Face and January 4 is Sketchbook: Yes, You Can Draw!
  • Anaheim: If you're going to be at CHA in January, I hope you'll take my "Cutest Cards Ever" ScanNCut class on Saturday night (January 10).  You can find all of the information HERE.
  • Santa Ana: I'm teaching a brand new and totally awesome two-day class at Jenny Doh's Studio Crescendoh January 17 & 18.  It's called Magazine Magic.

So, come on out and play with me.  If you're local, come for the day and if you're from somewhere else, book a hotel and hang out for an art weekend!

And now onto our fabulous guest post!

Reduction Stenciling using Washi Tape by Marjie Kemper

Kemper Journal with washi tape (1) 11132014
Thanks so much, Julie, for having me here as your guest today. I know many of us have played with ‘reduction stenciling’ before with paint and ink.  By that I mean using stencils to remove color from a page, usually with a baby wipe or paper towel.

I wanted to find another way to use some my ever-growing collection of washi tape, and it occurred to me that you can also do reduction stenciling with an exacto knife.

Think of your stencils as the equivalent of a collection of paper punches.  This single hexagon stencil is equal to six different paper punches, with a size range from ½” all the way to 3” wide.

I started by filling my page with strips of washi tape in a variety of widths, patterns, and colors.

Next I traced three different sizes of hexies.

I cut around the tracing and peeled back the tape to reveal the white page beneath.

To tone down and unify the washi tapes, I gave the page a light glaze of paint, and then I painted in my open spaces fully before stamping sentiments with jet black archival ink.
