100canvases
Slow and steady wins the race.  I hope that's true.  I continue to work towards my goal of 100 canvases.

I took a class at MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art) last year and created several canvases based on the work of Sigmar Polke. Polke is a really interesting artist.  His work is made from a wide variety of materials and he used a tons of different techniques — stenciling, screenprinting, painting, stitch, etc. I love artists who experiment with a wide variety of techniques and styles.  I hope that I am always evolving.

Here is the first of my Polke-inspired canvases:

Have I mentioned that I'm eye-obsessed?!

I am eye-obsessed!!

I created the three color fields to mimic a traffic light — red, yellow, and green.  Then I created a an eye Thermofax screen in two parts.

I didn't have any screenprinting ink, so  I used oil paint with mixed results.  In the end, I like the distressed look more than if the prints has been perfect.

The piece has some special personal meaning to me based on a childhood story involving a traffic light.  One of the things that I'm trying to work towards in my artistic endeavors is to tell personal stories in less obvious ways — messages, symbols, images instead of text.

It's not easy to push out of your comfort zone, especially when making art is your job.  But I think that being uncomfortable and having some failures is the only way to grow artistically.  So, I will continue to push myself because I want to grow!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • The distressed eye caught my eye.
I also love that you try new things and then I get introduced to them. I might not always thy them, but I know they’re out there.

  • Julie, if anyone is always evolving it’s you! Don’t ever worry about that. I loved the eye canvas! And, yes, perfection is not the goal in art, so you did well here.

  • Interesting images. The first canvas tells me that “Someone is watching and that someone sets the boundaries; non-conformist – BEWARE!” Hah… so much fun projecting my thoughts on things. Seriously, Julie, I love your personal stories and I admire your desire to grow and evolve as an artist and human being. You’ve inspired me. Thank you for sharing.
