Hellooooooo!  Today I've got a fun and fresh new idea for you, prompted by a question a student asked me in class this past weekend.

Stencilvsmask
As you can see from the diagram, you push colorant through a stencil.  A mask covers (or masks) an area and the colorant goes around it.  All of the Balzer Bits are masks.  However, a student asked me if there were a way to treat them as stencils.  I put on my thinking cap and came up with an idea.

Watch the video for the how-to:

Supplies

Here are the samples from the video:

And here is a scrapbook page I put together using my new taped-up version of the Scribbled Rose Bit:

Lots of yummy layers of stencils and stamps and paint and ink!

And here's a peek at just the background right after I created it (you can see my fabulous taped stencil above it).

I'm really loving this new way of using my Bits!  So, thank you so much to the student who asked a simple question and opened the doorway to a whole new world!

If you would like to win a pair of Scribbled Rose Bits (one to tape and one to leave as is), simply leave a comment on this post, answering the following question:

What blog (other than this one) do you read on a daily basis? Share a link!  :)

Please note that comments left on Facebook or sent in via e-mail will not be entered to win.  You have until Sunday, March 22 at 11:59pm EST to leave a comment on this post and be entered to win!

Thanks for stopping by!

But of course. I must say that I should probably check out some other blogs but you two seem to give me enough inspiration to get through my supplies (and add to my wish list).
Thanks for the chance to win Julie.

I have a few of your stencils/masks, most of all they have inspired me to create my own! Yay!

  • Like so many of the gals that have posted above, I watch your blog first thing in the morning. It’s always there and I don’t have to go hunt for an art fix while I’m waiting for my grandsons to get ready for school. I try out almost all your techniques because they are so freaking great! Anyway, just a side note, I’m loving my Junque Journal…love, love, love it!!! Best thing I ever made and a wonderful place to try out all my art techniques. I also receive a blog post from DirtyFootprints.com. Dirty Girl and Dirty Footprints have a distinct similarity in their title, don’t they? It encourages me to be a little “dirty” instead of so uptight with my art…let’s just play and have fun!!!!

Your blog as the first I visit every day, and then I jump around looking for a new favorite with daily posts. My latest find is http://lisacongdon.com/blog/ While she doesn’t post EVERY day, it’s pretty close, and as a new reader there is plenty of back content to binge on.

  • Thanks for the video and the idea…I’m using some of your “bits” and love them, but this idea pushes it to another level…win-win! And you are so right, the price point is great to have bits as both a stencil and an mask! I am following a blog from Carrie Cordero Designs at https://carriecorderodesigns.wordpress.com/ What’s great about this blog is that Carrie shows her steps using words and pictures, so it’s easy to follow for super-newbie me! Looking forward to seeing you at the end of the month for Junk Journals at the Ink Pad!

  • I really enjoy astampaday.blogspot.ca. Great tutorial, Julie. Would you ever consider offering the two versions in your next designs? I love the crisp images of the “converted mask” versions.

  • I love the scribbled rose bits! So pretty! To be honest Julie, yours is the only blog I read daily. I used to look at other blogs, but I lost interest in them as they went off on different tangents. I have been inspired to art journal every day by you, and it has been wonderful therapy during some difficult times. I love your zest for life, positive attitude and creative outpourings!
