My Dad and I recently went to see a Dutch painting exhibit at the MFA (Museum of Fine Arts) in Boston.  The exhibit we saw is called "Class Distinctions: Dutch Painting in the Age of Rembrandt and Vermeer."

from the Balzer Designs Blog: At the MFA Boston with My Dad
The exhibit divides up the paintings by the class of the people portrayed.  It's an interesting idea, but I'm not sure it enhanced the art for me.  You can read a review that disagrees with me here.

No photos were allowed inside the exhibit.  However, there was a photo op set up right outside the exhibit.  You could "step into a painting," and so Dad and I did!

When we first entered the exhibit, it was quite crowded.  So we poked around and then went to have an early lunch.  By the time the restaurant started to fill up, the exhibit started to empty.  So we went back for a second look around with many fewer people between us and the art.  After that we spent about an hour poking around a few other exhibits.  I've got quite a motley crew of photos, but I hope you'll find some things that you'll like!

This next piece looked like a piece of lit art hanging on the wall.  As you got closer you realized that it was a piece of ceramic with lots of holes to the outside and the light shining through was daylight!

Super cool shadows on this one….

Max Beckmann is one of my favorite painters on earth.  I was delighted to find some of his paintings in the MFA's permanent collection!

I always love to see sketches next to finished work.  It's interesting to see the evolution.  For me, the sketch is super technical and the finished painting is full of personality and mood and soul.  What do you think?

And how about these amazing paper cuts?

Lots of fun stuff and lots more to explore!  The MFA is a large museum and I am sure I will make many trips back to see both the permanent collection and what's new!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • The ceramic with the holes to the outside is very inviting.
The man coming out of the jeans is as well.
Very diverse art you shared with us.
I think that the necklace collection could be rivaled by your own.

  • Some super cool art you showed us. I dream of being able to go to a museum some day. I’d be in there for hours.
Can’t pick a favorite too many of them.
But I can say the one I enjoyed the most was the one of you and your dad stepping into that big pic.
Looks like that lady is totally laying her head on your dads shoulder. Or was that the intention.?
    Really funny.

  • Wow…that was spectacular. Thanks so much for sharing your visit to the museum. I will not be getting to Boston any time soon. I have only been there once 20 years ago. I love what you shared through pictures. Wonderful visual candy. 😉

  • Looks like you had a fun time. Your museum visits are always inspiring.
I’m intrigued by the piece of string art. Do you know who the artist is?

  • Thanks for providing far away shots and then close-ups. That’s how I look at art – the overall impact and then I keep moving in closer for the details. It is so illuminating seeing both views. Thanks for sharing!!

  • Boston MFA has an excellent Greek and Roman collection. They have a large marble Hera statue that they has to bring in through the roof. Makes me cry every time!

  • So interesting seeing old art and new art right on my screen. That got me thinking about how humans are designed to create. Which lead me to consider that all people should be encouraged to create, just like they keep telling us to exercise. This is easy to do with kids. But adults tend to be busy, or think they have no ability to create. And then there are so many who just need food and medical care with very little to create with.
