The MFA (The Museum of Fine Arts) Boston is currently showing an interesting exhibition called "The Idea of North: The Paintings of Lawren Harris." I had never heard of Lawren Harris before the exhibit, but I gather that's because I'm an ignoramus. I really liked his monumental, corpulent landscapes. Take a peek and see what you think:
His paintings were exhibited next to a selection of work by artists who were his contemporaries. It's always interesting to see artwork in the context of its time. I really appreciate it when museums go out of their way to provide art education in their exhibits.
What appeals to you?
Thanks for stopping by!

I do like the color schemes however his work is too “plastic” for my esthetic. I had not heard of him either. Both his work and Dove’s seem very reminiscent of the way the artists worked in the early 50’s-60’s. Thanks for sharing.

Very bold, very stark, definitely gives a feel of the mountains of Canada in the wintertime. Does not give me a feeling of joy, happiness, relaxation. He was quite prolific. I wonder what he did with the rest of his life, away from the easel?
Nice to be exposed to this very different genre of art.

Thank you for sharing this experience. The one photo that caught my eye and I keep returning to is the one of you snapping a photo of the painting with the silo. The shadows on the wall under the painting keep drawing me in.

Lawrence Harris was one of the Group of Seven, well known Canadian artists. Tom Thompson and Emily Carr also painted at the same time. Their works of the Canadian landscape are beautiful.

The development of a Canadian identity/culture (separate from the British and French)came first in Canadian poetry. Painting was not far behind and the Group of Seven (members varied over the years) developed their own artistic response to the Canadian landscape. Lauren Harris did not start out painting these fabulous abstracts, they came at the end of a long and glorious painting career.

I echo the comments of Mary Ann and Sheila j . I am sure you would feel a kinship with Emily Carr’s paintings! Check out the art of the others in the Group of Seven. They developed their own interpretation of the rugged Canadian landscape, far different from the typical watercolours that were commonly used in capturing scenes. The personal stories of the artists are very interesting, too.

In my working days I managed the art collection for one of the largest Canadian energy companies. We had over 3000 paintings in our collection in corporate offices across the country and on loan to the Canadian Embassy in Washington. By far my favourites were the Lawrence Harris and Emily Carr.
