I am super duper excited about these pencil cases! This is the first one I made:
I used some painted fabric that I had laying around and embellished it with some fabric text I cut out using the ScanNCut. My stitching wasn't quite right. And the dimensions weren't right.
So, I tried again.
Once again, I used some leftover painted fabric. This one was the right size, but it was floppy.
So, I tried again.
Two layers of outside fabric was the key to making it stiffer! But I messed up with the fusible web and had sticky bits everywhere. I added some gold foil to the sticky bits. It's a nice combo functional/decorative addition, but I knew I could do better.
So, I tried again.
I guess fourth time is the charm! Learn from my mistakes and watch the video for the way to create a fabulous pencil case:
I hope you'll give this project a try! It's surprisingly quick (even with all the mistakes I made).
Thanks for stopping by!

So cool. Thanks so much. Did you make your pin ring too? What a concept to have a pin ring! Would make sewing with pins so much easier and elimate pins falling everywhere including under the machine. Thanks so much for making this look so easy. Has never been easy for me. Thank you~!!

I love that you share your process and how much tweaking is involved sometimes in getting an idea from your head into actual reality. Thanks! I relate! 😉

Good Thursday Julie and All,
Excellent, Excellent Video. You did an awesome job with the zipper and the pencil cases. Yes when you use the pinking shears you are pinking the seam.
Some machines come with a pressure foot that is called a faux serger foot. It cuts and sews on a regular machine using the zigzag stitch. It is pretty good. You start by cutting in to the fabric about an inch with your scissors. Then place your fabric under the foot and away you go. When you are done you have a sewed seam that eliminates the fray edge.
I bought a similar set to the Brother weeding tool and spatula.
This would be a great addition of bags to add to holding those tools. You did make this look so very easy. I know with saving this video I can now make this case following your directions. Without using a store bought pattern. I mostly sew without using patterns myself.
That is way I love my scanncut. I made tea cup and sauces protector bags for a few of my tea cup collection. I used my scanncut to cut out my round tops and bottoms and middle section. I too used two pieces of fabric plus the fusable heat and bond to give it some stiffness. Total of six pieces and three pieces of heat and bond.
The hard part was sewing the zipper on to the top round and middle section. I also used bias tape around the top zipper area and bottom of the container. Four layers.
I then took a picture of my tea cup and used printable iron on cut it out with my scanncut and ironed it on. The I used my singer 9970 and used decorative lettering to write out the name of the tea cup and the year it was made. They came out pretty good.
I have actually bought some duck fabric to make another big case to go on top of my scanncut rolling tote. I have so many supplies now for my scanncut that I am over packing my tote. I do not want to have the fabric sheet tube and the applique tube or anything sitting on top of my scanncut while everything is put away.
What was that little box to the right on your scanncut screen? It looks like a gift box. Not the one that is now on the screen that looks like the tool tab. I have that one on my screen now thanks to the recent up date 180ver. If it is something new and special could you demonstrate and show us what it does? I would love to see it in action.
I am still waiting for my embossing kit to arrive says it will not be to me till the 19th of this month. Must be on a slow boat. 9 days to get to me wow.
Love this tutorial. I have copied and pasted 30 some odd pages of tips and tricks of the month from the Brother facebook pages. I ended in April 2015.I still have more to go. I will keep them on my computer for reference really so good information there. Thanks to you and the others for sharing all that.
take care will look for you tomorrow.
