I'm delighted to bring you another episode of the Adventures in Arting Podcast!
If you do not see the podcast player above, please click on this link. You can listen to a podcast anywhere and at any time. It is a recording that is available to you whenever you'd like to listen. If you'd like to download it to your iTunes library, click here. You can also pause and rewind or fast forward as you desire. I like to listen to podcasts while I'm making art. It's a little like hanging out with friends while you art.
Today's podcast features a conversation about learning in general and four particular learning experiences — the marbling class I shared in yesterday's blog post, a lecture on Winslow Homer's Summer Night (see a bit in this vlog), the connoisseurship dinner at the Museum of Fine Arts (see a bit in this vlog) and then a quilting class I took last weekend (photos below):
Class started with our instructor, Timna Tarr, sharing some of her quilts:
After some brief instructions….
…we were off and running with our own improvisational piecing!
The picture above is the quilt top that I finished in class. Kind of a hot mess, but I'm letting it marinate.
I don't have a lot of photos because of the snow that day…
…most of the students left class early to get home before the roads got too bad. I was one of the few who stayed the whole day and at the end of the day, I took my little red wagon, and headed home!

Wow…these are beautiful. I tried many years ago but quilting requires an abundance of time and patience!! I am convinced Julie…there is nothing that you cannot do!! Loved listening to your podcast posted yesterday. Thank you and your mom for adding so much intelligence, culture and sharing of your wonderfully rich experiences with your viewers. I must say, not having a mother who was even remotely interested in anything besides herself, you are so lucky to have your mom who is not only extremely intelligent, emotionally mature, but who also has the ability to synthesize what is being said and ask thought provoking questions and delivering an interesting perspective. Cherish the special relationship that you have together. A real gem what you two have together. LOVE…. love …love your podcasts!! Thanks so much for enriching my creative world !!

Yes, I loved the quilts …but here’s what I am thinking: That photo of you in the snow is one you have to keep! If I had such a great photo of myself I would make copies just in case I lost the original, and I would frame one (or more?) and put it somewhere where I could see it sometimes. It is such a lovely photo and really just exudes happiness. You are beautiful all the time, but that photo is special. And the quilts are great.

I’m totally with you – I love learning too, especially the in-person type of classes. I actually find it somewhat intimidating to walk into any classroom for the first time, thinking a lot of those things that you mentioned – I am out of my comfort zone and worry how I will do, sure that everybody is better than me…..I usually find out that the others in class are not better, just different.
Ah, another thought provoking podcast.

My kids are now saying “Your face looks like a butt” every time someone says “what did you say?” 😀 I love hearing about the classes you take. Even if you are not already an expert at whatever you are taking a class in, teachers make great students; I’m sure your instructors love you.

I don’t think your quilt is a “hot mess”. I think it needs a solid border, maybe the dark color in the quilt.

Just finished listening to your podcast and spent the whole time nodding in agreeement! I couldn’t imagine not always being open to learning. Most recently my learning has been online because it worked in best with my work and family commitments. Online is great and I have learned from some great teachers, however this semester I have signed up for a Introduction to Printmaking class at a local art school. It is a great experience – apart from craft stamps I have never really taken the time to learn about printmaking. The two amazing by-products of taking the class is 1. It is encouraging me to think about my art/craft in a new way and 2. It is so cool to sit and chat with other people who understand that a descjson about pink or purple paint choices can be a really fascinating conversation 🙂
Loved the podcast. Thanks so much!

Hi Ladies,
I loved this episode and really enjoyed hearing about the tours and dinner at the museum. That was amazing that you got to interact with those snuff boxes and your observation moment was priceless! I always learn so much from your conversations- in this episode the discussions about artificial lighting from the homer painting and the pieces of art that meant to be seen in ceremony, or heard, or interacted with- were so fascinating. Thank you for sharing and doing this podcast.
