Art Journal Every Day: No Journaling & Lots of Journaling

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

As you know, I'm not big on rules when it comes to art making of any kind.  And certainly not in my art journal!

Oftentimes people will say to me, "Oh, you write a lot in your journals."  And I say, "Yes."  And then they'll point to a page and say, "Where would you write on that one?"  And I respond, "I wouldn't."  And then there's a moment of confusion.

I would say that I don't do any journaling on about 30% of my art journal pages.  I don't plan it that way.  It just happens.  If writing seems to fit with the art, then I write.  If it doesn't I don't.

Today I'm sharing five pages that are right in a row in my art journal. Two with lots of journaling and three with none.  I didn't do it on purpose, that's just the way it happened.  I encourage you to be free in your art journal explorations.  Write and don't write.  Art and don't art.  Color and don't color.  Fill and leave empty.  It's a space for play!

This page is a simple exploration of the stamps I designed for Impression Obsession and some colored ink pads.  Simple and colorful.

This page features two colorful leaf shapes surrounded by tons of journaling.

Purple is not a color that I often use, but I love how it looks here!

You may remember the colorful ketubah that I made for my friends.  This page is made up of all of the leftover scraps of deli paper from that project.

Back in October I shared a process video where I painted the three faces on this page.  You can see that the only thing I did to finish off the page was add a heck of a lot of journaling!

This page was created in response to the news that NASA had readjusted the astrological signs.

You can see that this page has an unusually shaped edge.  I love that I never know what will happen on the next art journal page!

So, are you a writer or an art-er?  Or both?  Or neither?  I'd love to know!

Thanks for stopping by!

  • Hi Julie
Thanks for sharing such diverse pages. I don’t journal in my art journals. I usually find a quote, a stamp or an image that sparks an idea and build the pages around them.

  • I love quotes, and the quotes that I use have something to do about art or creativity, and also any expression of thoughts (of course) have special meaning to me. I am okay with no journaling, or a minimum of just a date, because I employ history or chronology. I have a Moleskine writing journal which had its start as a planner, where I have done the same thing for the past 3 years.
Julie, I love the pages you created with the stamps for Impression Obsession. The modern patterns with the somewhat retro colors are such a soft side of your shining personality. Another facet of the gem!

  • I would say that most of my pages have some writing but often just a quote or single words.

  • I mostly art, but I always like to finish the page off with a quote from my stash or a title. I would like to do more journaling, but my life is not all that exciting. However, I love seeing your journal pages. Thanks for sharing.

  • I didn’t love writing for a long long time, until I met Elizabeth Wix and was pointed toward Haiku. Now, I love love love haiku and the simplicity this process encourages. I get to really dive deeply into a mindfulness and patience I never considered before, and this notion fits with my art journaling. A few words in a page is good enough. Sometimes just one word is enough too. I don’t follow formal rules, I just let the momentum of the moment roll forth. Hope we get to see you at The Ink Pad sometime this year!

  • Hi Julie,
Love the portraits of the three ladies in your journal.
I have found out about an Artist from the late 1800s. Marianne North. Her paintings of exotic and unusual flowers are exhibited at the Kew Gardens in England. She was a Botanical and Botanist artist. Here painting look like painted photographs. Was aired on the Smithsonian Channel. These portraits are reminding me of her.
Zodiac I laughed at that. In Chinese zodiac I am a water snake. Funny cause I really do not like snakes.
Well you have a great Sunday. I will be watching HSN on Tuesday. Blizzard here. Sunshine in Florida. Have a safe trip down to the sunshine state.

  • Hi Julie….I would say I mostly art, but I do journal on every page, at least a tiny bit. I always journal a title or a statement. It’s usually about what the page is about, or sometimes a very concise summary of something that’s been on my mind. I’m a pretty private person, so I find that expressing most of what I express visually rather than literarily (?)( not sure if I made up a word there, haha.) makes it easier for me to share the art with others if I want. Only I know what the meaning is of my visual expression. If I journal I make it a game for myself to see how cryptic yet interesting I can make my short statement. If I have more to say, I will journal right over the art in loopy, close together scrawl so that no one can read it. Haha even I can’t read it usually when I go back and look at it. But I always do remember what it was about. Great question, thanks for posing it!
