My Mother was gifted with a hot pink desk caddy.  It's fabulous storage, but not exactly her style.  She asked if I could fix it up for her.

No problem!

I thought a bit about my Mom's style and home decor and decided that something from nature and with an art deco feel might be right.  I decided to carve a stamp of an art deco flower.  (You can see a quick video of the printing process here.  Learn to carve your own stamps here.)  I covered several sheets of black cardstock with the multi-colored prints (I made four sheets to cover this caddy — two vertical and two horizontal).  These are the vertical ones — one print denser than the other:

I painted the caddy a flat black (with black gesso) and then cut the papers to fit the caddy.

I love how the flowers visually line up on the front of the caddy despite the distance.

I cut some small notches…

…so that the decorated paper would slide into the divided sections.

I think this revamped desk caddy is gorgeous from every angle now!

I used a gold printing ink for the flowers and I think it really makes the whole project even more special.

Finally, here is the caddy at Mom's house where it now fits right in!

I wasn't conscious of it at the time, but this is the nearby tile in that room:

I feel like I did a really good job matching color and feeling!  I was a bit surprised when I brought her the caddy and realized how spot on it was!

  • I honestly did a double-take when you said you carved a rubber stamp for the Art Deco flowers and leaves! I don’t know why I would be so surprised, I’ve been hanging out with you for several years, and I’ve seen many beautiful things you’ve created. I actually thought you had found a beautiful William Morris print, or wallpaper and used that! Wow, what a beautiful design, beautifully executed!
