Art Journal Every Day: Daily Pages May into June

from the Balzer Designs Blog: Art Journal Every Day #artjournal #artjournaleveryday

If you're new to Art Journal Every Day, there is a short introduction here.  All of the previous posts can be found archived here.  Remember, it's just ten minutes of nourishing your creative self every day!  No need to finish anything or even like it. If you've done some art journaling this week, use the hashtag #artjournaleveryday so that we can all take a peek.  Even if you're not on social media, you can see everything (from twitter, pinterest, instagram, and facebook) that uses that hashtag here.

Today I've got three art journal pages to share with you.  These are pages from my daily journal.  If you're new to how I art journal: I work in a Junque Journal — a journal I make out of all of the paper junque in my studio.  It's half-finished projects and leftover patterned papers and experiments gone wrong.  I work in 10-15 minute spurts every (or most) days.  Some days I write.  Some days I color or draw.  It just depends on my mood.  My journal is reflection of my life at the moment.  I began as a scrapbooker and so this fulfills a lot of my memory keeping needs.

I completed this first spread while I was at the Crow Barn — my two-week quilting intensive.  Is it any wonder that I chose to decorate with quilt blocks?

I think this page is ugly — probably because of the colors.  But I like pushing myself to use colors I'm less enchanted with.  That's one of the things about an art journal: I don't try to make every piece a masterpiece.  My art journal must be a workbook.  A place of experimentation and failure.  Because you never know whether something is a good idea or a bad idea until you try it!

The quilt blocks were done on top of my junque pages using Neocolor IIs — a very rich and creamy water soluble crayon.

On this next page you can see my obsession with using painter's tape to mask portions of the paper underneath.  For best results, look for "clean release" or tape that specifically says it's friendly towards wallpaper.

2-BigTriangle-wm
There is a lot of scavenged junque as part of this spread.

These pink tags were attached to cookies we received at The Crow Barn.  They were too cute to throw away — especially after someone went to the trouble of hand making them!

There's a lot packed into this detail shot, so let's break it down:

  • The red paper with text on white strips is old scrapbook paper.
  • The greenish blue paper with swirls on it is actually a piece of scrapbook paper I designed a long time ago.
  • The larger tag is a "clean up tag."  It's a tag I used to mop up stuff while I'm working.
  • The chevron square is a tag from a piece of clothing I bought.

Everything finds a home in my Junque Journal!

These plus signs are a combination of masking with painter's tape and Neocolor IIs.  The Necolor IIs really do a great job in creating rich color.

I love how this funky hand lettering turned out:

When I travel with my journal, one of my favorite things to do is go to town with my gel pens.  It takes a little bit longer, but what's the big deal if I'm sitting on an airplane or in a hotel room?

I hope you find some time to art journal this weekend!

Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. I want to put together an Art Journal Every Day post that answers your art journaling questions.  If you've got a question — big or small — leave it in the comment section!  Thanks!

  • These are always my favorite posts, peeking inside your journals, they are so fun and remind why I love art journaling so much, its the little things mixed with writing, creating, well I blame you for my five year love affair with journaling!! I love the lettering — so much to take in, its so random, cute, creative and all that is good in the world, but for the life of me I have 4 sets of gel pens and I can NEVER get them to work on paint and after I try, I have 4 sets of gel pens that are full of lushish ink and it is stuck there. I even emailed the Sakura with no luck. Is there a secret sauce that is out there … did I damage them by using on a surface other than paper?? Any tips would be greatly loved and appreciated 🙂 …. adore your journal pages!!

  • Hi Julie~
Love seeing your journal pages! I’d like to know, since you travel so much, what things you consistently take with you to keep your daily journal going when you’re away from home. Does it vary from time to time or are there things always in your art travel bag?
    Thanks,
    Donna

  • The journaling and “artistic elements” of your pages often don’t relate to each other, right? I want to move toward that, but having a hard time. I keep thinking that everything in the spread needs to be related to each other, point to the same subject, etc. Probably from my years of scrapbooking….Any thoughts on how to break that mindset?
