As I mentioned last week, my quilt guild held a day of workshops on Saturday. We had a pot luck lunch and I brought cookies. Quilt block cookies. Each cookie was a half-square triangle.
And just like a quilt, when you put them all together, you get lots of different patterns!
I made four different "patterned fabrics" using royal icing:
It was my first time doing two different cookie icing techniques: wet in wet and one consistency piping. What does that mean?
"Wet in wet" is when you layer different colored icings while they're still wet. This way they all meld together into a single flat layer. You can see it demo-ed in this video:
I like the results a lot and it really makes the cookies look like they've been patterned. So many people asked me how I managed to do the icing on the cookies! However, I can see that I need to practice my piping. I have trouble keeping the line a consistent width and starting and stopping is awkward.
"One consistency piping" is the idea of using one bag of icing for all the piping work. In the video above, you can see that she pipes a border with one consistency of icing and then floods the cookie with a different consistency. In the video below, she pipes the entire cookie with one consistency:
Clearly I did not have the right consistency because, as you can see from my photos…
…my icing spilled off the edges. It is a time saver to only have one piping bag per color, but I need to either fix the consistency issue or take the time to pipe with a thicker icing to keep everything from dripping.
I love all of these cookie adventures! It's crafting you can eat!
