I just finished a new painting and I’ve been turning it all around. I can’t quite decide which is my favorite orientation. Personally, I’m stuck between two choices, but I thought I’d show you all four. Let me know in the blog comments which is your favorite and why!
Based outside of Boston, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer is a painter, printmaker, and collage artist who constructs vibrant compositions. Her artwork investigates the interplay of identity and perception, inviting viewers to take a longer look. Julie works in layers, both physically and metaphorically, exploring what is visible and what is concealed. Passionate about connecting with and inspiring other artists, she shares her expertise through in-person workshops and her online classroom at MyArtPractice.com. Julie's achievements include high-profile clients, multiple publications - including her book, “Carve Stamp Play” - and exhibits in New York City and throughout Massachusetts. She is a graduate of Brown University.
I like the portrait orientations better and 2 the best. 1 makes me feel something dark is looming over everything. These were my first thoughts. Now that I’ve looked at all of them again, after reading Julie H’s comment about the “sun,” I can’t stop seeing a dark “foot” kicking a “ball.” If you think soccer, it could work in any of the orientations. 🙂

I prefer 1 or 4. It has to do with the weight othat circle. The painting feels more stable to me when it is lower. Of course, if that is not the feeling you want then I can easily see how 2 or 3 would be preferred.

I prefer 4, more open, flow top to bottom or north to south. Heavy on the right, light on the left.
Second choice would be 2, for the opposite reasons.
1 and 3 appear to be unbalanced in presentation.

I prefer 2. I first notice the black “cloud” in the upper right and then I see all of these bright, beautiful colors and designs under it reminding me that life will bring blackness into our lives but there will be color and beauty again.

I prefer Number 2. I love the balance the best. And I love how the little staircase in the lower right leads up to that dark area, which suggests an unknown world of endless possibilities.

Thinking paths to choose. Right or left. For 3.
Or 4 the obstacles in the path way out.
Not sure why I am thinking tunnels.
Winter and animals are underground?

I like them all but I prefer the portrait orientation, particularly that of 4.
I can see it hanging on the wall or a room or hallway as a focal point. I prefer the weight of the dark “water” at the bottom left instead of the upper right as in 2. It draws my eye through the work in a clockwise fashion which is pleasing to me.

Number 2. It feels most balanced and yet still has movement (upward and to the left).
I have to admit, though, that I wasn’t partial to any of them until I noticed the title(s); Harbor view. Suddenly I could see what I was looking at. That’s when my preference for 2 emerged.

3 for me. I like the flow of coming into the harbor and moving up into the stadium or the piers. (At least that’s what I imagine as an arial view of a harbor.) The harbor entrance at the bottom, with the piers on the left move my eye upwards through the painting.

i chose 3 because the black (payne’s grey?) “grounds” the piece for me as the circle holds no weight in my eyes.
*however, if i know the harbor, i would need to orient the piece with north up. darn ocd brain.*
i enjoyed all of the comments and i kept going back to look at all 4 options. this is a wonderful (or frustrating) part of abstract art … we see them from our varied perspectives.

I like #2 the best. #1 looks like a black lake with a round park at the bottom. #3 looks like a ball rolling down a seals back. #4 looks like a road map, no thanks. #2 has balance in my mind. The black looks like a nice warm hug or maybe a black dog with his chin resting on a ball. And the other colors (green, red, blue, etc.) stand out and they draw your eyes away from the black. Yes definitely #2.

Allthough I usually prefer portrait orientation in this #3 is my favourite. The dark area in the bottom grounds it for me and the lighter areas and the circle lifts my view uppwards and to the right. Love it!

I prefer 1 and 2. #3 seems depressing to my soul like a giant cloud hanging over the scenery. I tend to the landscape when I paint and just realized it recently, so that may color my favoring #1. What I did notice after I studied them a while was that I didn’t notice the lines of color on the black blob section until #3. It’s strange how our minds block things. Once noted, they became apparent in all.
Looking forward to what you end up deciding.

I like #2. It reminds me of a topographical map with a river flowing. The black area here draws me in and the color on the left seems brighter this way.

I prefer 4. It feels it flows from the “blob” to the circle well. Also could be because I am left handed and my brain prefers to see that way?

What I did notice after I studied them a while was that I didn’t notice the lines of color on the black blob section until #3. It’s strange how our minds block things. Once noted, they became apparent in all.

I like #2. It reminds me of a topographical map with a river flowing. The black area here draws me in and the color on the left seems brighter this way.
