For the last month, I've been working on a new series of mixed media collage monotypes.  (That's a mouthful.)  You can see all twelve on my painting wall:

Each artwork is approximately 12" x 14".

So…what is a mixed media collage monotype?  Let me break it down for you (these are my own definitions):

  • Mixed Media Collage: Artwork comprised of multiple glued layers, in which a wide variety of mediums are used.  Collage papers are sometimes, but not always, decorated by the artist before being incorporated into the artwork.  Common media choices include paint and a variety of drawing utensils.
  • Monotype: One-of-a-kind print, as opposed to a monoprint, which is usually printed in a series.  For instance, a print made from a stamp, is usually considered a monoprint.  A gelatin print is usually considered a monotype.

Based on the explanation, you can see that the artwork is a mashup of two things I love to do: mixed media collage and gelatin printing.  Here's a closer look at each piece, as well as a look at it in situ:

Working in a series is a great way to visually work out an idea.  You can see that I'm working with a group of colors, a group of shapes, a set of techniques, and a particular aesthetic.  So all twelve pieces hold together as a group, but they also each work as individual pieces of art.

After completing these pieces, I do feel that I'm closer to the realization of my original concept. But I know that I have further to go.  So you can expect to see more of these mixed media collage monotypes!

If you're interested in diving deeper into the behind-the-scenes creation of these twelve pieces, January's Studio Vlog for Maker & Super Learner Members is all about it!

  • Oh dear, I’m confused. “Monotype: One-of-a-kind print, as opposed to a monotype” ??? Is that a mono-typo? Or am I missing something?
