I finished this painting a few weeks ago.

But I started it in 2012 — a decade ago!!

In 2012, I took an online class all about intuitive painting and painted my very first set of larger paintings.  Slapping paint on a 24×24 canvas felt crazy and intimidating and amazing.  This is the piece I made (and you can read my original 2012 blog post about it):

Three years later, in 2015, I hated the painting and went back to re-do it.  Here is that re-do (and the 2015 blog post about the re-do):

And now, in 2022, I made another set of adjustments.

I love this piece now.  It reflects so many things that I'm currently interested in — both topics and techniques.  Here are some detail photos:

I really love how it turned out. The gold paint didn't photograph really well, but it gives the painting something really special in real life.

And lest you think this piece came out of nowhere, in my art journal, I've been painting lots and lots of images that all led to this one.  Here are a few examples:

When I decided to move from journal to canvas, it was great to be able to take the shortcut of reusing an old painting.  And this new painting fits right in with my other recent artwork in tone and style (this isn't my house, btw – just a staged photo).

If you love this piece and want to hang it in your house, it's in my online shop.  It's a 24×24 stretched canvas.  Free shipping in the continental USA.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I love seeing the progression (over years!) of this piece!!
I was surprised that the ruminations of it started in your Art Journal. I expected you to say Studio sketchbook… But perhaps you’ve been creating pieces like this in both?? I might need a refresher on the ways in which you use the 2 books (perhaps that will be my Member question this month!)
    Thank you for sharing 🙂

  • Julie-I love this piece and appreciate the face that you kept it and were able to modify it in areas until you loved it. Makes me feel less crazy about hanging on to the art I created/started several years ago.

  • Time well spent if you ask me. Would love to see other paintings that you’ve worked on.
