Art Basics: How to Score Paper & Why It Matters

I've started a new series of short instructional videos that I'm calling, "Art Basics."  In essentials, it's skills and techniques that every artist should know.  The first skill is scoring paper: why and how?

If you make a greeting card…

…a book…

…a paper lamp…

…or any number of artful paper projects…

…you're going to want to score your paper, before you fold, for best results.

In this video I take you through tools, methodologies, and even paper grain.  Enjoy!

Let me know what basic techniques YOU think every artist should know!  I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • I would LOVE a review of glue techniques. When is glue stick ok? When to pull out the matte medium? How to glue without wrinkles?

  • What I would like to learn is cutting with a roller blade (or how they are called). And how that works with a plastic ruler (for quilts?). As a lefty, can I use the same tools?

  • Just recently read somewhere else to fold opposite the score, like you did. Counter intuitive but works well.

  • HI JULIE! I make a lot of cards and art journals, so a score board is essential. The one I have is a 12 x 12 multi purpose board from We R Memory Keepers. It can be used to make angled scores to create envelopes, too, but I have not made many envelopes. One nice feature of it is that the scoring tool has a place for storing it on the underside of the board. Also, on the top and left side of the board it is raised so when you line up your paper it is straight. I keep the paper in that position, and after it is scored, I fold the right side of the paper over to the left and line up the paper against the ridge. This keeps the fold straight, and the edges of the paper line up. The right and bottom side of the board do not have the ridge, so if your paper is larger that 12″ you can still use the board. https://www.wermemorykeepers.com/shop/basic-tools/score-boards/scoreboard/ This is the only one I have tried, but it works for me.
